Year 12 French Unit 3 At a Glance

These dates are a guide to the Unit. We may need to change them slightly as we go. Term 1: Week 1 - 6 La Technologie This theme will look at modern technology such as mobile phones, ipods and the Intenet. In part, we will look at reasons for needing these technologies as well as the disadvantages they present. The theme will end with the outcome: exchanging information, opinions and experiences (3-4 minute role-play with DP). Main skill: speaking. Term 1: Week 7-9, Term 2 Week 1-2 Les Rgions de France et la Francophonie We will be looking at different regions of France and some countries that make up La Francophonie (the French-speaking world). There are over forty countries. The outcome at the end of this topic will be: analyse and use information from spoken texts (You will listen for information/ideas/opinions from one or more texts then re-use this content to write a piece of your own in a particular text-type e.g. letter). Main skills: listening and writing. Term 2: Week 3-6 Littrature pour les Enfants To end the unit we will read some extracts and short works written in French for children. They will include: Babar, Le Petit Prince and La Belle et la Bte. The outcome connected to this theme is: express ideas through the production of original texts. Main skill: writing.

In Unit 4 our main areas will be The French Revolution / Mai 68 and the situation of young people of North African background in modern day France.

Grammar revision and extensions throughout the year Possible times Monday lunchtime (before our double), Tuesday lunchtime, Tuesdays after school (3.30 4.30 p.m.) Bring your lan grammar book. We can structure it as below or deal with any particular concerns you may have. In term 2, I will run some extension grammar classes. Possible topics Present tense, reflexives, imperatives Imperfect tense, pass compos, plus-que-parfait Immediate future, recent past, future, conditional Adjectives and adverbs Asking questions (the interrogative form) Present participles, avant de + infinitives, aprs avoir + infinitive 3. There are many websites that could be very useful to your French learning. Great for reading practice. A major French tv channel. Great for La Francophonie. Lots of videos, articles, French language games. Revising basic themes. A lot of fun. Revise grammar heaps of great online fill-ingap type activities to improve your grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Listening comprehension. The level is similar to the standard of the French in the listening SAC and on the exam. They are all great practice and you will learn lots of good words and expressions! Steps: 1. listen, watch and read both sets of subtitles (English and French) 2. listen, watch and read the French subtitles 3. listen and watch with both subtitles off

4. Wider reading There are lots of magazines you can borrow. These are kept in the folders on top of the brown map cabinet in E 2.5

a. Speaking Alliance Franaise de Geelong VCE Extension evenings Tuesday evenings 5-6:45 p.m. Geelong college. Starts February 25. Every second Tuesday. Mostly practice with spoken French but many other skills and activities covered too. Price TBC, usually a bit less than $150 (and an early bird offer too!) for the year (14 evenings). Limit of 40 places. b. Reading Chez Nous magazines. To be organised soon for those who want it. Cost approximately $16. Great for extending your vocabulary and improving your reading skills. 4 slim magazines. c. Listening www.languageplus.com.au The school has subscribed to this site and is it free for you and a great resource. I know who is working on it and who isnt. Designed with the VCE exams in mind. www.ecoutezbien.com Produced in Victoria with the VCE Unit 4 exam in mind. There are 10 different units for you to work through as many times as you like. At all times, the focus is on vocabulary building and listening comprehension skills. Try the free unit and let me know what you think. You can download the lesson guides for these four units. There is one called Discussing a Sports event which is great for improving your understanding of the use oft the imperfect tense. The other three units are beginner level but worth investigating. All the audio files on this site are free but if you buy credits, you can buy the lesson guides for all the units of work and that, of course, allows you to get more out of each unit. You can download the audio files to your mp4 player and listen on the bus or while having a run, ect.
