Project report Of Jaffarpur School

As a part of the curriculum an assignment to study and experience the various aspects of construction was given to us by our Lecturer for the subject Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures Mrs. Preeti Dhami. As future civil engineer its our passion and enthusiasm to understand the basics of construction to the core aspect of it.

The students of 2nd year civil were grouped into a team. The members of the team are as follows: 1. Mayukh Ghosh 2. Abhinav Aggarwal 3. Akshay Mahajan 4. Vikas Gupta 5. Punit Pandey 6. Prince Dhiman 7. Prashant Kumar 8. Rahul Maurya 9. Shalon Tirkey 10. Sagar Gaur The tasks assigned to the students were: To visit the M.C.D School that was being constructed in Jaffarpur, New Delhi. Note down the specifications of the different members being used in construction of the building such as columns, beams etc. Gather the details of the materials being used for the construction work. We went to under -construction M.C.D School which originally had an old building but it was not enough to accommodate all the students. Therefore as a part of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, a new double storey building was being constructed coverin`g an area of about 6000sq feet. Every building consist of two basics components: i. The super structure, and ii. The sub structure or foundations.

FOUNDATION
A foundation is that part of structure which is in direct contact with the ground to which loads are transmitted. Since the soil around the school was a bit mushy a concrete foundation was provided of about 4 X 4 feet at a depth of about 7 ft (from the base to plinth beam). A combined footing was provided to support all the columns.

COLUMN
A column is predominantly a compressive member in vertical direction subjected to compressive force with or without bending moments. A combination of six column were provided in each classroom having external dimensions of 30 X 30mm. The columns designed are reinforced concrete columns with steel bars provided in compression as well as tension zone to provide enough strength and serviceability. The bars used were of 22mm and 16mm dia. A concrete of M25 grade was provided in the superstructure and a grade M15 was provided at the foundation level. To make the concrete, Portland Pozzolana cement(OPC) of grade 43 and 53 were used. For reinforcement Rathi steel bars of 250 grade were used. The steel bars consisted of helical projections for an effective bond between concrete and steel.

WALLS, DOORS AND WINDOWS

Each floor consisted of about 12 rooms having a capacity of about 35 to 40 students. The rooms had a dimension of 20 X21.5X11ft for the ground floor, and for the first floor it was 20X21.5X11.5ft. The walls of buildings were built with simple brick masonry. The inner walls of the classrooms were given a mortar plastering, whereas the outer walls were given mosaic work. Almost all kind of bonds were visible in the construction namely English bond, Flemish bond, etc. depending on the type and ease of construction. Each room consisted of 2 doors and 2 windows. The doors were located at the ends of the same sidewall and windows were located on the opposite sidewalls one between the two doors and the other spanning the whole length of the other wall. The doors were of height of 211cm and a width of 47.5cm. Windows were of about 5 feet high with dimension of 2X1.5 feet. The doors were of timber. The windows were gazed with 4 steel rods crossing each other.

LINTELS
Lintels are mainly provided when openings are invariably left in the wall for provision of doors, windows, cupboard, almirah, etc. These openings are bridged by provision of either a lintel or arch depending on the type of construction. At the doors and windows lintels were provided of concrete with 5 bars of 12mm dia and stirrups of 8mm dia.

SLAB
Apart from this, the structure consisted of slabs that provided strength to the roof of the room. The slab was a reinforced one with concrete and steel bars of 8mm, 10mm and 12mm dia. All the steel bars were flexible. Adequate spacing was given between the bars. The main reinforcement spacing was about 6 inches and cross was of 150mm.

BEAMS
The beams were provided in the section at a depth of 1.5 ft having a width of 1 ft. The bars used in reinforcement were of 6mm and 12mm dia having a total of 7 bars, out of which according to the design 4 were provided in tension zone and 3 were in compression zone.

PLINTH
The entire building was at a plinth level of 1.5 ft above the ground. Apart from the main structure a large recreation area has also been provided and in that area simple murram flooring is being given.

Some other mentionable details about the structure are as follows: ! The entire building is accurately leveled with dumpy level. ! A septic tank is being constructed at the end of building with dimension of10X8X12 feet. ! The entire building is raised in such a way that the falling rainwater could easily be drained at a separate place where it can easily be collected. ! The building is of L-shape. ! It consists of a long corridor and columns are provided at regular intervals whose dimensions have been given earlier. ! The school is located in front of Rao Tula Ram Memorial Hospital.
