Through Scholarships for tertiary education and skills d evelopment, New Zealand contributes to a growing population of well-educated and highly-skilled people with the necessary abilities and qualifications to make a real and positive difference to their country and communities and who will gene rate and sustain economic growth for your country. New Zealand Scholarships are offered in key priority subject areas that are join tly agreed with the Government of your country. Scholarships provide an opportun ity for people to obtain qualifications at participating New Zealand universitie s and technical institutions. Closing Dates New Zealand ASEAN Scholar Awards (NZAS) are available for postgraduate study in New Zealand. NZAS applications are due by 15 July. Applying for NZAS is a two st ep process: First, obtain an offer of place at an approved New Zealand tertiary institution (it is recommended that you apply by 30 April). Once you have receiv ed an offer of place, your Scholarship application is due by 15 July of each yea r. Priority Subject Areas Scholarships are offered in specific subject areas that are relevant to the deve lopment needs and employment opportunities of your country. Scholarships are ava ilable for the following subjects: Agriculture Development: Phytosanitary, agri-business management, agricultural e conomics, agricultural systems and management, sericulture, vegetable production , livestock, bio-security, biotechnology, food sciences, post-harvest processing , rural development Disaster Risk Management: emergency management, hazard assessment and management , climate change adaptation, natural resource management, environmental manageme nt, geology, land planning & development Public Sector Management: Law, justice, legal and judicial reform, public admini stration, public policy and management Private Sector Development: Management, leadership, economics, value chain devel opment, trade facilitation, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) developmen t, private sector management, accountancy, applied economics, business finance, commerce, marketing, entrepreneurship, industrial relations, logistics & supply chain management including Tourism (Ecotourism, tourism management, tourism plan ning) and Renewable Energy (Geothermal, solar, hydro engineering and wind energy ) Qualification Types and Duration The following types of qualifications are available under New Zealand ASEAN Scho lar Awards: Postgraduate Certificate (6 months) Postgraduate Diploma (1 year) Masters (research and/or coursework) (1-2 years) Doctoral (PhD) (3.5-4 years) Scholarships Available The one Scholarship scheme available is: Scholarship: Number available: For university study (postgraduate), apply for a NZAS

1. Find out if a New Zealand Scholarship is right for you Are you committed to the development of your country? New Zealand Scholarships are offered to candidates who demonstrate a strong comm itment to your country and who have the motivation and ability to contribute to your country's social and economic development after completing their Scholarshi p. Candidates must also have strong academic or vocational skills and leadership ex perience or potential. Studying in New Zealand will also give you the opportunity for personal growth a nd unique experiences, and will give you life-long linkages to New Zealand. Short and long-term opportunities available Scholarships can range from six months to four years in length. Short duration Scholarships enable you to gain relevant skills without being out of the workforce for an extended period. Through a postgraduate certificate or diploma, you can undertake a qualification in a relatively short period of time which will be directly applicable in your workplace on your return home. Postgra duate qualifications enable you to come away with a qualification which will be the foundation for your career. Are you eligible for a Scholarship? Awards are open to candidates from government, civil society and private busines s organisations. To be eligible, applicants must: Be a citizen of your country and have resided there for at least two years at th e time of application (permanent residents are not eligible to apply). You must also reside in your country of citizenship during the application and selection process. Have been working in your country for at least two years prior to application. Be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to your country's public, private or civil society sector and to the development of your country in general. Agree in writing that you will return to your country for a minimum of two years following completion of your Scholarship in order to contribute to your country 's social or economic development. Be available to take up the Scholarship in the calendar year for which the Schol arship is offered. Satisfy the admission requirements of the New Zealand institution in which the d egree programme is to be undertaken, including the institution's English languag e criteria. Be able to satisfy Immigration New Zealand requirements for international studen t entry to New Zealand (i.e. medical checks, police clearances/character checks,

etc). Not be seeking funding for a qualification already commenced in New Zealand or a nother country. Not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia (ex cept for Pacific countries who also have New Zealand citizenship). Not hold or have held a New Zealand Government or Australian Government Scholars hip in the preceding 24 months at the time of application. Be strong academic performers, possess leadership potential and are under 40 yea rs of age. Proposed course options must be progressive of your first qualification (this me ans holders of bachelor degrees should apply for Masters or PhD and Masters grad uates should apply for PhD study). Do you meet the English Language Requirements? A high standard of English is required. New Zealand tertiary education institut ions set their own admission requirements for English language proficiency. All applicants should check the IELTS (International English Language Testing System , academic stream) or TOEFL (Testing of English as a Foreign Language) score req uired for admission to their selected New Zealand education institution. For postgraduate study, most New Zealand education institutions require a minimu m IELTS score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, for postgraduate level study. Some postgraduate qualifications, particularly education or PhD programmes, may require a higher score. Find out about New Zealand s tertiary education system New Zealand s Universities and Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) ar e committed to maintaining well established international links and to meeting i nternational standards of education. They undertake significant, ongoing researc h projects in order to boost their knowledge bases. There are eight government-f unded universities and 18 ITPs, all of them internationally respected for their academic and research performance. All of New Zealand s tertiary institutions offer a broad range of subjects for und ergraduate, masters and doctoral (PhD) degrees in commerce, science and the huma nities. Each university has its own specialist subjects such as medicine, engine ering, law, veterinary science, agriculture and environmental studies. A number of universities have more than one campus, often located in different c ities, and some have overseas programmes. Find an education institution that is right for you It is important to find a tertiary institution that will meet your personal as w ell as academic needs. Each institution specialises in different subjects. At so me institutions, most students live on campus, and at others, most students live independently off-site. Some institutions are in New Zealand s largest cities, an d others are in smaller cities. Visit the websites of institutions you are inter ested in, or ask them to send you information about student life at their instit ution and in their city to help you decide. New Zealand primary and secondary education for dependents. Support is provided for the awardee only and is not sufficient to cover costs as sociated with supporting any dependents of the awardee. However dependents may l ive in New Zealand with the awardee if you have extra funds available to support them, and if the dependents meet the requirements of Immigration New Zealand, i ncluding evidence of funds. The partners of students are eligible for a work vis a that allows them to live and work in New Zealand for the duration of their par tner s study Refer to the Visa information for partners and dependent children of New Zealand Aid Programme scholarship students information sheet. Terms and Conditions All applicants who are offered a New Zealand Aid Programme Scholarship will be r equired to sign a contract with the New Zealand Government declaring they will c omply with the terms and conditions of the Scholarship. The terms and conditions include: All awardees (and any family members) are required to return to their home count ry for a minimum period of two years following completion of their Scholarship i n order to contribute to their country s economic and social development. If an awardee and any family members do not return to their home country after t heir study they will be personally liable for repayment of the full amount of th eir Scholarship. To make every effort to achieve satisfactory academic progress in your studies i n accordance with the continuation criteria set by MFAT and the Education Instit ution. To only provide information in your application that is true, complete and corre ct. That you are not aware of any medical, personal or other circumstances (e.g. dis ability, illness, family or financial matters), which might prevent you from com pleting your study within the scholarship term. What is the application process? For New Zealand ASEAN Scholar Awards: Applicants apply directly to one of the nine eligible New Zealand education inst itutions before 30 April 2014 using their usual application process for internat ional students. Include a cover letter with your request for admission which adv ises the institution that you also intend to apply for a New Zealand Scholarship . Download the New Zealand Scholarships application form and complete all sections . Gather all documents requested on the application form. PhD students must also i nclude evidence of correspondence with a potential supervisor. Shortlisting and awarding process: 1. Applicants will be advised as to whether they have been shortlisted or whethe r their application was unsuccessful. 3. Shortlisted Scholarship applicants will be advised whether they will be requi red to attend an interview and undertake English language tests. Please ensure t hat you respond to any requests for additional information in a timely manner to ensure your application can be considered for a Scholarship. 4. Shortlisted candidates will be advised whether or not they have been awarded a scholarship. Letters of Offer for in-service applicants are typically issued in October and November each year.
