CONCEPT NOTE ON PAVEMENT DESIGN AND THICKNESSES ADOPTED IN THE COSTING


The Concept note on Pavement Design brings out the methodology adopted in Carrying out the
Pavement design and the thicknesses adopted in the costing for review of Concessionaire and
approval.
1.1

STIPULATIONS OF CONCESSION AGREEMENT FOR DESIGN

Design shall be carried out for 20 years

Thickness and composition of layers for widening shall be same that of existing
pavement

1.2

Flexible pavement Design shall be carried out as per IRC: 37 and IRC: 81 guidelines

Concrete pavement design shall be as per IRC:58

Service Road shall be designed for 10% of main carriageway Traffic

DESIGN TRAFFIC

The CVC and Axle Load Survey conducted by FVPL have been considered in arriving the MSA.

1.3.1

Concept Note on Pavement Design

Stipulations in the Concession Agreement


The Concession Agreement stipulates that the growth rate shall be highest of the following
in the initial 5 years.

5% per annum for all vehicles.


Trend growth of various vehicle categories.
Projected Growth rate of revenue assumed in the concessionaires cash flow.
Growth determined from secondary socio economic data and elasticity factors.

And then reduces every 5 years by 2 (two) percentage points subject to a minimum of 3%.
The Growth rates considered in arriving the msa, since they are higher than others have been
tabulated in below Table:

The project road has been divided into single homogeneous section.
The MSA arrived for 10 years and 20 years design life is tabulated in Table 1.4

The pavement design for the new Pavement has been performed for 150 MSA as it is limiting
loading as per IRC: 37:2001 and100msa for overlay as it is limiting load as per IRC:81-1991
1.3.2

Design CBR

Consultants have conducted tests on barrow area samples and the results for the same are
awaited. Meanwhile a design CBR of 10% has been considered as it can be seen from site that
Good soil is available through out the Project road.

OVERLAY DESIGN

The Consultants have carried out BBD survey and the characteristic values arrived from the test
varies from 0.6mm to 0.8mm; hence there is no requirement of overlay on existing pavement.
However, as a minimum case as stipulated in IRC 81-1991, an overlay of 50mm DBM and 50mm
BC has been suggested for the entire Project length.

It is to be noted that NHAI has laid a surface course of 50mm BC in the year 2007-2008.

Recommended Pavement Crust Composition

Since as per CA requirement, the thickness and composition of layers for widening shall be same
that of existing pavement, the following crust composition has been recommended.

10 msa has been considered in the service road pavement design.


The crust arrived for the same is
BC- 40mm
DBM- 50mm
WMM- 250mm
GSBC 200mm
Total 540mm
