OFFICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT DR JOHNSONS HOUSE

We are currently looking to recruit five volunteers who are able to commit some of their time to helping behind the scenes at Dr Johnsons House over the course of Spring/ Summer 2014. Four of the placements will last 6 weeks from the week beginning Monday 5th May, and will require a regular time commitment owing to time and space limitations at the House. The fifth placement (Events Volunteer) involves a minimum commitment of one evening per month and will last for a longer period of time. Not all placements require formal qualifications or previous experience, but an enthusiastic approach and an interest in Dr Johnson and eighteenth-century Britain is desirable. Please refer to the person specification for each post. COLLECTIONS VOLUNTEER (two positions available) 2 days per week You must be able to commit to the same days every week of the placement. You will primarily be assisting the Locum Curator and Museum Assistant in organising and cataloguing our business archives from the past 100 years, with other duties as required. Person Specification Essential Desirable

A methodical approach and an eye for detail. An MA in Archival research or Museum Studies. Some previous experience of cataloguing collections.

SOCIAL MEDIA VOLUNTEER 1 day per week You must be able to commit to the same days every week of the placement. You will be primarily responsible for updating the Houses Twitter and Facebook accounts. This will involve uploading content in advance, researching given topics where necessary, reporting on usage and developing new ways of attracting followers. Person Specification Essential

graduate level. Some previous experience of representing an institution or business using Social Media in a formal environment.

MARKETING VOLUNTEER 1 day per week You must be able to commit to the same day every week of the placement. You will primarily be assisting the Locum Curator and Museum Assistant in researching and executing a visitor survey to determine the visitor profile of our existing visitors and exploring ways to attract new visitors and improve their experience. The role may also involve updating and cataloguing our marketing databases, the sending of mail-outs and leaflet dropping, with other duties as required. Person Specification Essential

Desirable

Previous experience in the workplace involving attention to detail, a methodical approach and a professional phone manner. Previous experience in marketing or employment in a public-facing role.

EVENTS VOLUNTEER A minimum commitment of one evening per month You must be prepared to work evenings. Along with the Locum Curator and Museum Assistant, you will be on duty as a representative of the House to facilitate the smooth-running of our monthly evening event. The role will involve setting up the House for the event, being on hand to direct visitors and answer general enquiries, ensuring the collection is safe and secure at all times, and assisting with the serving of drinks. The study of eighteenth-century History and/or eighteenth-century English Literature and/or Dr Johnson to at least graduate level and/or a current undergraduate student of one of the above.

Desirable

Previous employment in a public-facing role.

Owing to the small size of the organisation, all our volunteers must be prepared to undertake a wider variety of tasks, ranging from occasional desk duty to day-to-day housekeeping as required. Please note that no travel expenses can be offered and no employment opportunities are available at the end of the period.
