Michigan Content Expectations CCSS 4.MD.3 Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor. Objectives: The student will apply mathematical problems using the perimeter formula so that they demonstrate proficiency by scoring at least 7 correct on the worksheet Perimeter of squares and rectangles in the guided practice. (Application) The student will apply real world problems using the perimeter formula so that they demonstrate proficiency by receiving at least a 3 on the given rubric when finding the perimeters of at least 5 common objects around the room, giving a definition for perimeter, and making and solving their own real world problem. (Application) Student Friendly Objectives: The student will apply mathematical problems using the perimeter formula. (Application) The student will apply real world problems using the perimeter formula by finding the perimeter of common objects around the classroom. (Application) Assessment: Informal Formative This is given during modeling as the students answer the questions about finding that the teacher asks. This is addressing the students as a whole and is the first time that they are working on

finding perimeter so it is not expected that the students all know it at this point. Formal Formative This will be used in modeling using graphing paper to teach real world problems and have the students draw them out for themselves. TTW take this information and see if more instruction is needed and see what area needs help to guide the students during the next class period. Formal summative This will be given during guided practice to check the students understands of how to find a perimeter. This is done through using a geo board. With the information collected from these worksheets TTW see how well the students did and will use this to meet an objective. This will be given at the end of the independent practice to see if the students know how to explain how they found the perimeter. TSW also show that they can find the perimeter by finding the perimeter of at least 5 real objects

Instructional Procedure: 1. Anticipatory Set: Introduce the topic of finding perimeter of rectangles and explain it should be familiar from last year. Sing song about Perimeter (have words posted for students to read) o Have students sing it with you the second time Ask about how they find perimeter (song explains it) o Explain how it is measured (units, centimeters, inches, yards, meters, miles) Today we are going to be talking about perimeter of rectangles. You should all remember learning this last year, but in case you forgot here is a song to remind you: (sung to Farmer and the Dell) Perimeter is around. Perimeter is around. Oh, oh, don't you know, Perimeter is around. You add up all the sides. You add up all the sides. Oh, oh, don't you know, You add up all the sides. To make sure that it gets in your brain I want you all to sing it with me. (sing song again with students) What can you tell me about perimeter? How do you find it? Perimeter is the outside or the part around the object that you are looking at. When you add up all the sides you give a unit of measure to this can be measured with things like inches, yards, centimeters, or miles

2. State Purpose and Objective of Lesson: Go over objectives Explain how it is connected to real world (fence around yard) Will someone read the objective posted on the board? Today you are going to use the perimeter formula of adding all the sides to figure our real world and mathematical problems. Finding the perimeter is important to know since there are many ways that it can be used in real life situations. Do any of you have a fence around your yard? This is one example of a situation that someone needed to figure out the perimeter. Someone had to add up the sides of the yard to see how big the fence needed to be to fit around the entire yard. 3. Instructional Input/Direct Instruction: TTW guide students through learning and explain each step at a time. TTW help students when they are doing their guided and independent practice and also work with students that may be struggling during the independent practice. TTW ask questions about how to find the perimeter and why they might need to know the perimeter of something that they are measuring during independent practice. TSW show that they know how to find perimeters by doing the worksheet in guided practice. TSW practice finding perimeters using a geo board. TSW measure objects around the room to find the perimeter or real things. TSW define how to find the perimeter. 4. Modeling:
(For this lesson TTW will model one way to do the problem, and then go right into guided practice for that model. Then TTW model a different way and follow that with guided practice. So the two are working together at the same time and not distinctly separated.)

Explain and show geo board to students. o Tell them it is measure in units and show one unit. o Give example problem o Have students make example problem with geo boards o Give more problems with geo boards Class, this is a geo board. We are going to use them to find the perimeters of the objects that we make with a rubber band. The rubber band represents the perimeter of the object. For example if you were to have this shape (show a 2x3 rectangle) you could find the perimeter of this rectangle by adding up the sides. From one peg to another is one unit. So, if we wanted to find the perimeter of this rectangle we would add up the sides like this. (2+3+2+3=10) So the perimeter is 10 units. (pass out geo boards and have them make a 2x3 rectangle and count the sides) Now, please move your rubber band out

like this (show them a 2x4). What is the perimeter of this rectangle? It is 12. What would the perimeter be if you put your rubber band as big as it could go? Make sure you do this one carefully; we do not want anyone to get hurt because of a broken rubber band. The perimeter would be 16. Explain perimeter with graph paper o Give problems using graph paper You can also use graph paper to figure out what the perimeter is. Here is how you do that. You can trace the graph to give you a rectangle as you would the rubber bands around the pegs. Then you can count up how many sides there are to find the perimeter. Now, I am going to ask you some problems and I want you to write down the answer using graph paper. If you can and want to you may use the geo board to help, this might not always work if the perimeter is too big though. 1. What if you wanted to make a sandbox in your back yard and it was going to be a square that has a side 3 units long. What would the perimeter be? 2. You neighbors are building a fence for their new dog, but they do not want it to take up the entire yard. Your neighbors bought enough material for a fence to be 10 square yards. Please draw two different ways that your neighbors could build their fence. 3. Your gym class teacher is making a game outside. He wants to paint the lines in the grass for the boundaries. Your teacher wants the perimeter of the rectangle to be 28 meters and one of the sides to be 6 meters. What length are the other sides of the rectangle? One of the sides is 6 meters, so the width is 6. You need to find what the length of the other side needs to be so that the entire perimeter is 28 meters. 5. Guided Practice: Tie into unit Find perimeter of states that are rectangular o half of the class do Colorado and the other half Wyoming o Use pictures of states as handouts for students to find the perimeter We started our unit on the regions of the United State. Some of the states are rectangular, so we would be able to find the perimeter of them using the formula we learned. The states that we are using are Colorado and Wyoming. One half of the room will find the perimeter of Colorado and the other half will find Wyoming. You can you one of these rulers or paper to find you answer. This will be done using the scale on the map. When you write your answer make sure you include the unit you are measuring in. For this I want you all to measure in miles. Give worksheet to have them practice finding perimeter Using the geo boards if needed you will find the perimeters of the rectangles on this worksheet (Perimeters of squares and rectangles). You will be looking at the different units of measure here. The first row filled in what unit is being used. Make sure that you

include the unit in the rest of the problems. Let me know if you have any questions.

6. Independent Practice: Have students find perimeters of 5 objects around the room o write down what object and the perimeter in inches or centimeters on their own sheet of lined paper o give students rulers Class, now you are going to go around the room and find the perimeters of different objects. I want each of you to write down the perimeter of at least 5 different objects and the unit of measurement that you used. You will need to make sure that you have a pen or pencil, a sheet of paper, and a ruler.(Cathcart p. 347). TTW be walking around while the students are measuring, making sure that they are doing it correctly, answering question, and asking questions about what they are measuring and how they are doing it. It is time for everyone to come back to their seats. I want you all to think about what you were doing when you were finding the perimeters of your objects. Please write down how many sides you needed to figure out the perimeter of a rectangle and write a sentence telling how to find the perimeter of an object. If you finish that then please make your own real world problem involving perimeters and solve it on the graph paper. TTW collect these papers to check for students understanding. If they do not have enough time they can finish it for homework that the teacher will check the next day. 7. Differentiated Consideration Finish quickly o With the independent practice will be asked to keep going and get more perimeters from around the room, since they needed a minimum of 5 they could get as many as the can in the time given. If they do not feel like they need the extra practice TTW explain how to find the perimeter of things that are not rectangles and have them go around the room and try to measure those items as best they can. They could also have the option to write down examples of when they would need to find the perimeter of something. (ex. putting trimming in their room or painting the lines on a soccer field) Struggling to complete o They can come back to the desks and work with the teacher to go over perimeter while the other students are walking around the room. The teacher can use the geo boards again or write out examples on a piece of paper and work with the steps of finding the perimeter. If this helps them understand they can do the independent practice at home. They can measure 5 things at home and bring it back the next day and explain to teacher how they found out what the perimeter was.

Interpersonal o They could find their objects together and find 10 as a group as long as they are both working on figuring out the answers and measuring their objects. Intrapersonal o They can find objects and handout by themselves. Visual learner o There are a lot of manipulatives and things that can help. They will use the geo boards Bodily-Kinesthetic o Students will be walking around to find their 5 objects and measure them.

8. Closure: Go over objectives again o ask how many sides needed to measure perimeter o ask for definition of perimeter o ask for real life example Collect papers and end lesson Will someone read our objective again for us today? Now seeing that objective will one of you share how many sides you had to measure to find the perimeter? Can someone share their definition to find a perimeter with the class? What is something that people might need to know the perimeter for in real life? Please make sure that you hand in the paper that you wrote what you measured and the perimeters you found as well as the paper with the two questions we just talked about before you go. Thank you for your hard work today. Have a great day.
