Course information Control of Electrical Drives (ET4291) 2009/2010

Martin Hoeijmakers April 6, 2010

1 General
Because a large part of the course consists of a simulation practical, students have to sign up with the coordinator 4 weeks before the start of the course.

2 Short description
Coordinator: Dr.ir. M.J. Hoeijmakers, 015-2785746, m.j.hoeijmakers@tudelft.nl Type: course Course year: 4/5 Semester: 0/0/0/3 ECTS credits: 5 Reference(s) from literature: W. Leonhard. Control of Electrical Drives. Berlin: Springer, 1990 Other: study load 120 hours Computer use: yes Laboratory project(s): lab. work incorporated in lectures Design content (percentage=0%): Catalog data: mechanical systems, digital simulation, thermal effects, dynamics of DC machines, control of DC machines, dynamics of induction machines, vector control, ux orientation Goals: The student is able to make a dynamic model of a drive system with a DC machine including a simple mechanical system. He can extend this model with a simple thermal model and with a cascade control system including a simple model of a power electronic convertor. He can use these models in Matlab/Simulink to simulate the system. Further, he can use the simulation results to optimize the adjustment of the controllers in the cascade control system more or less. The student is able to calculate the steady-state behaviour of an induction machine, including a circle diagram and a torque-speed graph. He can explain how to use the corresponding equations to implement a simple control system for the induction machine (Volt/Hertz control). The student can use dynamic models of induction machines in different reference frames, such as standstill, rotating with the rotor, rotating with the rotor ux, and rotating at an arbitrary given speed. Using these models, he can simulate drive systems with an induction machine, including a simple mechanical system, with a scalar and with an open-loop or a closed-loop vector control system. He can explain the relevant differences between an open-loop and a closed-loop vector control system. Detailed description of topics: - Electrical drives with DC and AC machines, supplied by power electronic convertors. - Mechanical systems, digital simulation, thermal effects - Dynamics and control of DC machines 1

3 Course material
The course material consists of - the lecture notes Electrical Drives - Theory and Assignments (handed out during lectures) - Reader Control of Electrical Drives ET4291 Version maart 2009, which is available from MicroWeb (order number: 06917470016; price: e 3.12). This reader consists of parts from the following two documents - Electric Drives - An integrative approach by Ned Mohan: Section 1-1 up to and including 1-5 Section 2-1 up to and including 2-10 Section 7-1 up to and including 7-7 Section 8-1 up to and including 8-10 - Control of Electrical Drives by W. Leonhard: Chapter 4 - Modelling of AC machines by Martin Hoeijmakers: Chapter 1 up to and including 3 and appendix B

4 Assessment
The reports written at the practical are used for the discussion in an oral exam.

5 Prerequisites
Betere titel? Course requirements Students should have passed the exams for Electrical Machines and Drives (ET4 117) and for Electronic Power Conversion (ET4 119). Further, they should have passed the computer instructions of AC Machines (ET4 121) and they should pass the exam for this course, including the practical, before April 23??. In addition, students should have a basic knowledge of numerical (integration) methods, the computer program Matlab, control and systems engineering and mechanics.

6 Kick-off meeting
The kick-off meeting is on Tuesday April 20 at 13:45 in the library of EPP (LB 03.470).
