CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. Background of Study Language has an important role of communication in human life. People use language as a tool to express ideas and feelings. By using language, people are able to describe their feelings, emotions and thought easier than using other elements. Hornby (1995 !"#$ says, %Language is human and non& instincti'e method of communicating ideas, feelings, and desires by means of a system sounds and sound symbols. People use language to communicate and interact to each other. (t is easier to con'ey information to another people in order to share )no*ledge. Palmer (19"+ +$ says, %( ha'e suggested that linguistics is the scientific study of language. Linguistics has important role to components of language that include sound, the arrangement of *ords, and meaning., (n its broadest sense, linguistics can also be refried as the study of human language ho* it is structured, ho* it is used to represent meaning, ho* it is used to communicate ideas, ho* it is formed, ho* it is decoded. Linguistics tries to loo) for commonality across all human languages, and should not be confused *ith -Language .eaching/, *hich aims to teach a single language. .here are four branches of linguistics study0 they are Phonology, 1orphology, 2yntax, and 2emantics. (n this thesis, the *riter focuses on 2emantics. Palmer (19"+ 1$ says, %2emantics is technical term used refer to

the study of meaning., (n addition, semantics focuses on the meaning of *ords, phrases, or sentences in the language. .he meaning of phrases, sentences depend on the meaning of its *ords and the structure. 2ystem for analy4ing language di'ides linguistics expression into t*o classes literal meaning and non&literal meaning. 5ses in non&literal are called figurati'e language. 6ccording to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (197" #"9$ figurati'e speech or figurati'e language is %an example of the figurati'e use of *ords., 2ame definition is gi'en by Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary (3885 !##$ that is %a *ord or phrase used for 'i'id or dramatic effect., 9urthermore, 9igurati'e language or %figures of speech,

feeling becomes difficult to understand because the song *riters adopted figurati'e

language to beauty their lyrics. .his thesis *ill discuss figurati'e language that

(n this study the *riter *ill discuss the figurati'e languages that are used in Areen Bay/s selected song lyrics. .he song lyrics are ta)en from %6merican (diot, album. .his album consists of thirteen songs but the *riter only ta)es fi'e out

of them to be analy4ed. .his album is one of the best albums that the Areen Bay has because it includes the phenomenal song %Boule'ard of the Bro)en Breams,
