3. Background: The Life straw

Approximately 43% of the global population, especially the lower-income populace in the remote and rural parts of the developing world, is deprived of household safe piped water. This means around 900 million people are without access to safe, clean drinking water and 1.5 million of those people are children who die from diarrheal diseaseswhich can be prevented with access to clean drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene education. Point-of-use (POU) treatment, treating the water at its immediate source, is an alternative approach. The LifeStraw and Family LifeStraw, produced by Vestergaard Frandsen, are prime examples of successful approaches to POU treatment. The LifeStraw is just thata life-saving tool in the form of a large straw that filters water as people suck dirty water into it. Some of its benefits are

History and Development -year long association with The Carter Center, an aid organization set up by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, which runs a program called Global 2000 aimed at eradicating the Guinea worm disease. filter that is put over a water storage container and through which the water is poured through. Mesh size of this filter is smaller than Guinea worm and thus water poured through it filters out the Guinea worm larvae.

from external sources, thereby coming in direct contact with the Guinea worm. Significant amount of water consumed by selected households was consumed from unsafe sources outside the household. In order to prevent people from getting infected with Guinea worm when

drinking water outside the house, a simple mechanical filter (125 micron) called Pipe Filter was introduced. This plastic pipe has a stainless steel mesh that filters out the Guinea worm larvae from water. y filters out the Guinea Worm larvae but also bacteria and viruses from drinking water.

5. Re-Design: improvement on the current innovation

The purpose of LifeStraw is simple, provide clean drinking water to those who need it. With all of the focus on preventing famine and providing education to the third world, its easy to forget that many of the worlds poor lack something even more necessary: clean water. Yet according to Vestergaard Frandsen, a Swiss-based Humanitarian Entrepreneurship company, almost 1 billion people live without access to potable water, and nearly half (43%) lack access to clean water at home. In order to halve the number of people without access to clean water in the next four years, drastic changes need to be made. The company hopes that innovation is the LifeStraw. Since its LifeStraw was recognized by Saatchi & Saatchi's public relations arm as the top "world-changing idea" in a recent competition of technologies impacting medicine, education and aid work.

As we have stated all the good and the important features about this life saving life straw. As for the objective of this report, we have analysed on this product and came out with few ideas to make possible improvements on this product. After some serious analysis on the product we discover that, this product could be modified to for the better use in different environment. The detailed information on the ideas which we have generated listed below with explanations.

1. Detachable container surrounding the device As seen from the figure 5.1. we have added a additional container shape around the life straw device which could be designed for dual purposes. Firstly this is act as container when cant reach out to the water hence they easily scope the water and suck the straw with their convenience this designed in way that the device cover could extend retract. When not in use it will act as a cover for the device.

Covered life straw with Container to scope the water.

The bottom cap not necessary as this new design cover could act as a cover

This could be extended so that people dont have bend down much while sucking the water

Instant Refill filters

The LifeStraw unit should be able to purify about 1,000 liters (264 gallons) of water -- 2.7 liters (0.7 gallons) a day -- meaning that it will last a year before it needs to be replaced. There are no replacement parts; users must get a new unit each year. Hence this is relatively expensive for the people in developing countries to use this useful device.

To solve this problem mainly for the people of developing country this product should be made available in replacing the filters so that it can reused, thus this could be very helpful for the people in poverty countries to continuously use this product.

2. Different Size for Kids and children

This is mainly targeted for younger kids or childrens whom might not able to fully make use of this device as this relatively big and long for smaller kids to suck the water. Hence it would best that if this could redesign to cater to their needs as we have discussed during the lecture the first step morphology of design process , the recognition of need.

Reduce the sucking edge of the straw so that kids wont find it difficult to use Reduce the height
