Subject: Job Application Package for AREVA
Date: March 6, 2014
AREVA Internship during summer of 2014 as Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) Engineer
AREVA is an innovative and leading company in the nuclear power industry around the world.
AREVA provides comprehensive nuclear engineering services and fuel assemblies for many
reactor designs. Additionally, the company develops and constructs nuclear power plants and
research reactors.
Job Description:
The position the company is offering is focused on the development and design of commercial
nuclear fuel for Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR). The job description states that a candidate
would be assisting experienced engineers with different types of computer simulations for
analysis and further testing of reactor fuel. There are two types of simulations: neutronics and
thermo-hydraulics. The neutronic calculations model fission processes and the behavior of
neutrons, which causes the fissions, in the reactor core. The thermo-hydraulic analyses
concentrate on the thermodynamic aspect of the fuel performance. To fulfill safety requirements,
both of the simulations have to be done on any fuel that is being put into a reactor core. In other
words, those types of simulations predict a fuels behavior and help to prevent a nuclear
accident. Therefore, the position would require proficiency with specific computer applications
and exceptional communication skills.
Audience and Rhetorical Analyses:
There are explicit requirements for the position listed in the job description. Moreover, the
applications would be sent to a specific person, a technical recruiter, who would evaluate the
candidates. Therefore, I need to develop my application package to satisfy the listed criteria.
Both the cover letter and the rsum first present my academic performance at The Pennsylvania
State University, because it covers most of the requirements of the position. I have taken the
relevant courses on the neutronic and thermal hydraulic analyses. Additionally, I describe my
familiarity with computer codes that the company is using for their simulations. In the rsum, I
emphasize my computer proficiency and ability to use the important applications. Besides my
academic progress, I also describe my work experience to show that I have honed my practical
proficiency. I state several skills, which I have acquired while working at Breazeale Nuclear
Reactor to show that I have the appropriate communication and procedural compliance skills.
Furthermore, I demonstrate my determination and ability to progress by showing, in the rsum,
that I became a licensed senior reactor operator, after starting as a reactor intern. At the end of
my rsum, I include my most notable honors, awards, and social activities. The last part should
prove that I am a suitable well-rounded candidate for the position.

Dear Mr. Griffin:
I am interested in the PWR Core Engineer Internship that was recently published on the
companys website. The description of the job is fascinating, and I would like to apply for the
position. I believe that I could become a valuable asset to the company, due to my academic
performance at The Pennsylvania State University, and hands-on experience I have received
while working at Breazeale Nuclear Reactor.
I am a senior in B.S. Nuclear Engineering program in The Pennsylvania State University, with
expected graduation in December 2014. I have a cumulative GPA of 3.49, and an in-major GPA
of 3.46. Throughout the courses I have taken, I have gained a solid background of knowledge in
neutronics and thermo-hydraulics. During Experiments in Reactor Physics (Nuc E 451) class, I
learned the basics of the MCNP 6.0 application in terms of writing and running a specified input
deck. For my senior design project, I am designing a refueling pattern for the Gator Lake PWR
reactor, which requires both ANC and Sub-channel Analysis Codes to calculate needed
operational and safety parameters.
Furthermore, I am a licensed Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) at Breazeale Nuclear Reactor on
the universitys campus, where I have been working for two years. At this reactor, I have gained
the appropriate skills in procedural compliance, problem solving, and handling radioactive

Subject: Job Application Package for Argonne National Laboratory
Date: March 6, 2014
Argonne National Laboratory Internship in Radiation Detection Technology, summer of 2014
Argonne National Laboratory is interdisciplinary science and engineering complex, which hosts
groundbreaking research projects and state-of-the-art technology achievements. It has 15
scientific divisions, one of which is nuclear engineering research division.
Job Description:
In the job advertisement, the laboratory offers three job opportunities: development of a system
that detects and traces a radioactive material, evaluation of portal radiation monitors, and
simulations of radiation interaction with matter. I am applying for the second offer, which is
described in the announcement as the review and assessment of testing of portal monitors,
hand-held radioisotope identifiers, and radiological search equipment. The job would be mostly
associated with calibration and properness of operations of the radiation monitors.
Audience and Rhetorical Analyses:
The job advertisement provides specific contact information for the application review. The
person of contact is the program manager, who works at the Radiological Detection and
Response department. Although the announcement does not identify the job requirements, I
believe that this position requires knowledge of different types of radiation characteristics,
practical experience on specific equipment and software. Therefore, I need to develop my
application package to meet with the criteria. Both the cover letter and the rsum first points out
my academic performance at The Pennsylvania State University, because my strongest expertise
comes from the knowledge of the field, rather than my work experience. I have taken the
relevant courses on the radiation detection, measurement, and radiological safety. Additionally,
in the cover letter and rsum, I emphasize my prior usage of specific computer applications that
could be used at the job. Then, I describe my work experience to show that I sharpen my
practical skills as well. The description is done in the similar manner as for the first job
application. At the end of my rsum, I include my most notable honors, awards, and social
activities. The last part should prove that I am well rounded and a suitable candidate for the
position.
