DESCRIPTION
POLI 1 is a package plant designed for the secondary treatment of domestic waste waters from residential
communities not served by the main sanitary sewer.
POLI 1 is generally associated with a Grease Trap for pre-treatment of gray water discharged from kitchen,
showers and domestic laundry equipment or a Double-Septic tank in situation where black and gray waters
are mixed.

This secondary treatment plant is based on a traditional activated sludge process.

The tanks are made of monobloc high density roto-moulded polyethylene and the process is divided
in two distinct phases: the biological oxidation phase performed into a horizontal HDPE tank of cylindrical
shape and a settling phase performed into a vertical HDPE tank with the traditional conical shape base to
facilitate the sedimentation.

The biological oxidation phase occurs in presence of aerobic bacteria and protozoa which consume
biodegradable soluble organic contaminants and bind much of the less soluble fractions into floc particles.

The oxygen necessary to the biological processes is supplied by a silenced membrane-type air compressor
positioned externally.
Oxygen is diffused inside the oxidation compartment by means of EPDM non-clogging
membrane diffuser, delivering fine bubbles. The operation of the air-blower can be timed and regulated
in relation to the organic load.

From the aeration tanks water flows to the settlement area. Sedimentation is the final step in the secondary
treatment process with the objective to settle out the biological floc and produce a supernatant with
very low levels of organic material and suspended solids.
Activated sludge from the settlement area is recycled back to oxidation area through an air-lift device,
operated by an air-blower. The quantity of sludge recycled is adjusted by means of regulation valves,
through which is possible to remove periodically the excessive quantity.

INSTALLATION
EXCAVATION Dig a hole of appropriate dimensions. The bottom of the excavation must be leveled
and compacted with a 10 cm layer of fine sand (grain size 0-5 mm).

BACKFILLING Fill the tanks with clean water before backfilling to avoid collapse of the polyethylene
structure during backfilling. Once the tank is full, dump sand around the tank and level it.
For a walk-on solution build a 5 cm thick light concrete layer on top of the tank and finish
with a 40 cm thick soil.
For a drive-on solution a reinforced concrete slab is required to protect the tank.
Accessible manholes are required for inspection and maintenance.

PIPING AND PVC pipes and fittings are recommended for connecting the POLI 1 with the inlet and outlet
FITTINGS lines. Inspection chambers situated upstream and downstream of the plant are recommended
for any inspection or maintenance works.

ELECTRICAL With the exception of the smaller plant (50 EI) which could be supplied with 220 Volts
CONNECTION equipment, for all other model of POLI 1 the electrical equipment operates with 380
Volts power supply.

START UP &
MAINTENANCE
COMMISSIONING After completion of installation, check that the air blower and diffuser are working correctly.
To accelerate the plant start up place the lyophilized bacteria kit in the oxidation area and a
chlorine tablet in the compartment situated in the outlet pipe.

ORDINARY Make sure there is no sludge stagnation in the settling tank to avoid the anaerobic processes.
MAINTENANCE Every three months insert a chlorine tablet in the appropriate place in the outlet pipe work.
Excess sludge must be removed from the tank every six months using a specialized company.
