! Song of the Sea with Instruments! ! ! !

Behavioral Objectives: Students will play through groups of instruments including bar instruments, drums, triangles, recorders, ocean drums, and rain sticks. Students will successfully read music notation consisting of B, A, and G on the treble staff with few errors (able to be discerned by the teacher by ear). ! Materials:! 6 Metallophones! 30 recorders (already assigned)! 25 copies of "Song of the Sea"! TEKS:! 117.18. Music, Grade 5.! ! (b) Knowledge and skills.! (1) Perception. The student describes and analyzes musical sound and demonstrates musical artistry. The student is expected to:! (C) identify a variety of music forms such as AB, ABA, rondo, and theme and variations.! (2) Creative expression/performance. The student sings or plays an instrument, individually and in groups, performing a varied repertoire of music. The student is expected to:! (B) perform expressively, from memory and notation, a varied repertoire of music representing styles from diverse cultures; and! (C) demonstrate appropriate small- and large-ensemble performance techniques during formal and informal concerts.! (3) Creative expression/performance. The student reads and writes music notation. The student is expected to:! (A) read standard notation;!

Instrumental performance in rotation groups:! Have the sheet music in every square except blue square!

Review whole song on recorder with all squares!

- Display entire song on Document Camera (Blue square won't have sheets)! - Sing through whole song while ngering on recorder once! - Play through whole song with accompaniment (if successful with above)!

Review notes of the metallophones with entire class!

- Display A section of metallophone part on document camera! - Have whole class sing top metallophone notes, pretending to play! - Go through A section! - Review through B section, followed by A section while singing and pretending to play!
Playing through the piece!

- If students seem to be playing with bad technique, have a quiet moment and remind
students to sit on knees, let mallets bounce, and to hold elbows up!

- Go through entire piece with accompaniment with all instruments! - Repeat once if necessary, otherwise, explain other instruments, and when to play
them. Use your imagination and see if you can imagine yourself at sea.!

- On rotation, after one read through, encourage trading of the single instruments
(ocean drum, rain sticks, gong)! Prepare to rotate:!

- Have students take recorders, leave music sheets, leave auxiliary instruments, place
mallets on oor or on top of bar instruments, and point to the direction they're going!

- Rotate 3 times! - Mrs. Rubio will assist with auxiliary instruments as needed (recorders or percussion)!
***Note - Mrs. Rubio needs to work with grades 3, 4, and 5 on the piece "Thank you for being a friend" to bid farewell to the principal of 9 years, Mr. Rocha. She needs to have it ready by April 25th, and needs about 10 minutes to work on this. She will conclude class.
