Jennifer Peirce LM 6190 July 19, 2013 Collection Assessment Plan Definition Collection assessment is an ongoing process in which

school library staff identifies strengths of the collection as well as areas needing improvement. Its purpose is to determine how well the library collection meets the needs of its users and the curriculum being taught at Kearns High School. Goals The collection assessment process is intended to: Confirm that sufficient and appropriate resources are available to meet the needs of different areas of the core curriculum taught at Kearns High School. Ensure that high-quality and high-interest reading material and other resources are available to the students and faculty. Create a collection that is seen as being of high value and use to the Kearns High community. Involving the Community The Kearns High School Library functions as a resource to help meet the academic, curricular, and literacy needs of the students, faculty, and other members of the Kearns High community. With that in mind, input from students and faculty, as well as other members of the community, regarding the library collection is welcomed, needed, and sought after. Surveys regarding the library which include questions regarding the collection will be sent to faculty and students annually. Students and may request books or other resources to be added to the collection at any time. Faculty will be asked to help evaluate the resources in their subject areas to indicate holes in the collection and outdated resources as well as offer suggestions for new acquisitions. Timeline & Procedures Summer o Do an inventory of the collection. o Use the results of the inventory to create a collection map. o Analyze the collection map to determine the influence of the collection assessment and development during the previous year. o Analyze results from the survey given at the end of the school year. o Identify areas of focus for collection development for the year based on the following criteria: Sections shown to have a large number of outdated materials or are lacking sufficient materials in the collection map Subjects/areas which were commonly identified or requested in the collection-related questions on the survey.

Core curriculum changes Subjects/areas which have not been assessed recently with an aim to assess all areas of the library collection over a five-year period. Beginning of School o After selecting areas of focus for collection, meet with faculty members of the department related to that area to create a plan for their involvement in assessing the existing collection and for selecting and recommending new materials. This plan will be implemented throughout the school year. Because budgets need to be spent by April, this process and all acquisitions need to be completed before then. During the School Year o Areas of focus are directly examined by library staff with support of involved faculty to determine the scope and depth of the collection in relation to the core curriculum as well as the accuracy, appropriateness, age, and condition of existing holdings. Resources that are found to be outdated, inaccurate, or in bad condition may be weeded. o Check holdings against course reading lists, electronic databases, and other suggested bibliographies to determine and recommend electronic and print materials to be acquired. o Each month, check circulation reports as well as student book request lists and hold lists to determine what students are interested in reading and what is not circulating. End of the School Year o Provide students and faculty with library survey. o Meet with the faculty members who were involved during the year to get feedback on the results of the collection assessment and development.
