ARTS OPPORTUNITIES
FOR K-12 SCHOOL GROUPS
A Resource for Charlottesville & Albemarle Educators
Dear Charlottesville and Albemarle Educators, Im writing to share the arts education goals of Piedmont Council for the Arts (PCA) with you and introduce you to the new edition of our Community Arts Education Handbook. PCA is the designated local arts agency of Charlottesville and Albemarle and our programs encourage community-wide access to and appreciation for the arts. We share the commonly held belief that the arts expand educational opportunities and bring communities together. To support the role of the arts in the lives of our communitys youth, PCA: Offers arts education training and workshops for parents and teachers Recognizes high school students excellence in the arts Mentors young people about careers in the arts and the field of arts administration Supports local activities that give young people hands-on creative experiences Advocates for arts education through meetings with community leaders Provides arts education resources for parents, teachers, and students For the 2012-13 Community Arts Education Handbook, PCA gathered information from over 70 area arts organizations and artists about the programs they provide to teachers and students. Some of the listings offer specific performance dates, others describe free school tours that can be scheduled at art galleries, and still others explain learning experiences that artists can provide in your own school. PCA keeps this and other arts education information available online at www.charlottesvillearts.org. It is our hope that principals will make this handbook accessible to all teachers in their schools and that educators will also use the PCA website as a resource throughout the year. We also encourage questions and idea exchange anytime, either on the phone, by email, or in person. In closing, Id like to thank you for your commitment to nurturing the growth and development of young people in our community and for helping make the arts a priority in your school. The PCA staff, board, and volunteers look forward to working with you! Sincerely,
Piedmont Council for the Arts 100 5th Street, NE P.O. Box 2426 Charlottesville, VA 22902 434-971-2787 www.charlottesvillearts.org
