General Notes on Instrumentation Cable

Instrumentation Control cables with copper conductors are manufactured as per IS-1554 (Part 1), 1998. There are different types of instrumentation and control cables.

NON-FIRE PROPAGATING CABLES Installations with a high risk of fire need cables which do not spread fire, but contain if at a place by completely burning down. These cables made of insulating materials with a high index of oxygen also have a very low to zero level of emission of toxic or corrosive gases.

INSTRUMENT CABLES These are cables designed for assuring maximum reliability with low level signal transmission for thermocouple, resistance thermometer, electric transmitter etc.

HIGH TEMPERATURE CABLES These cables which may have to also withstand presence of flame or corrosive atmosphere, have special insulations like fibrous materials (asbestos, silica yarns, Teflon etc.)

FLEXIBLE CABLES Used for transmission of low voltage these cables have to withstand a great variety of stress conditions.

FIRE RESISTANT CABLES This requirement poses a special constraint on cables which have to ensure maintenance of emergency services, like safety valves, alarms, fire fighting equipment. Etc. These cables have the following properties - Low smoke emission. - Fire retardant properties. - Very low toxic and coroners fumes emission.

SHIELDING / SCREENING A shield eliminates noise which would interfere with the effective functioning of the cable.

INNER SHEATH For all cables having two or more cores, a common covering (inner sheath) is applied over the laid up cores. Single core does not have an inner sheath. CABLING A fundamental operation in the construction of a cable; the performance of a cable from the mechanical point of view (resistance to bending and twisting) and from the electrical point of view (rejection of noise, elimination of cross-talk) depends on the success of this operation. Hence it is not enough to have machines which are adapted to the purpose but cabling must be correctly planned in order to give the required performance. The placing of the conductor is important and method of cabling critical. ARMOURING Armoring applied to inner sheath. These cables are then ARMOURED. The function of the ARMOUR is not so much to simply provide mechanical protection to the cable, but to make the cable self supporting.

THERMOCOUPLE EXTENSION / COMPENSATING CABLES These cables can also be termed as instrumentation cables, since they are used for process temperature measurement. The construction is similar to paired instrumentation cable but the conductor material is different. Thermocouples are used in processes to sense temperature and are connected to the pyrometers for indication and control. The thermocouple and pyrometers are electrically connected by the thermocouple extension/compensation cables. The conductors used for these cables are required to have similar thermoelectric (emf) properties as that of the thermocouple used for sensing the temperature. The cables are manufactured as per IS: 8784, ANSI-MC 96.1, B.S., ENI. DIN and customer specifications.
