This is a 4-4-2 formation which is the simplest formation a team can use. It has a goalie, four defenders, four midfielders and two strikers.

Observation 1 Sunday, January 26 1:30-2:15 Monday, January 27 5:30-6:15

Figured World: A figured world is a large social enviroment complete with its own conventions of approriate behavior, manners and community-specific discourse Rules and Conventions: I am observing the Barclays Premier League for my figured world. It is a soccer league in England. It is considered the best league in the world by many. People all around the world watch these games every week because they love soccer. Soccer is a huge part of many different cultures. Children all around the world can just grab a ball and start kicking it around with friends.
The games take place on a soccer field inside of a stadium. The fields look massive on television. The players need to be in shape to run such long distances. With every sport there are rules. The basic rules are: Scoring: each team tries to kick the ball into the opposing teams net Fouls: Fouls are unacceptable during the game, but the problem is that it is up to the referee of how strict he wants to enforce the rules. Two footed slide tackles are always a bad thing, but a full arm extension is not always considered a foul. If a foul is bad enough the ref will show a card. Yellow is a dangerous tackle and red is for a very dangerous foul. Red cards can also be given for fouling on an open

run that could result in a goal, or hand balling, hitting the ball with your arm from slightly above the elbow to the fingers, to stop a goal. Two yellow cards equals a red card. Offside: A player is offside when he receives the ball or makes a play on the ball when he is behind the last defender. The player may run offside to receive a pass, but he may not go offside until the ball has left the passers feet. Out of Bounds: The teams must stay inside the outer white lines on the field Defense: Each team can defend the opposing team by kick or stealing the ball away as long as they do not foul. There are a few discourse communities in the game. First there are the teams. These are the most important ones. The fans are the second community on the list. They cheer their teams on to try to motivate them to win. The coaching staffs try to prepare the teams for the games and try a make decisions during the game to help their team gain an advantage. Each team has a goal keeper, a defense, a midfield, and an offense. The keeper is the last line of defense for the goal. The defense is the main protection of the goal. The midfield is transition from defense to offense. Offense is the main goal scoring position. Instead of a play off style championship like most other sports, soccer usually is played by league title. Each win is 3 points, a tie is 1 point, and a loss is 0 points. Whoever has the most points at the end of the season is the title winner. If there is a tie, goal differential, the ratio of goals scored against to the goals other team scored against you, is the tie breaker. Here is a list of the positions most commonly played: GK: the goalkeeper is a very important part of any team. Without a good keeper who is going to protect your goal when your defense gives way. Defense: this is divided into left back(LB) , right back(RB), and center back(CB). The center backs are the heart of the defense. There are usually two, but sometimes three. Their job is to stop any apposing players from attacking thourgh the middle. The left and right backs are faster defenders. They need their speed to stop the wings from attacking down the sides. Midfield: there are quite a few positions in the midfield. You have center mids(CM) who are very important to controlling possession with their passing. This position has two variants in center attacking mids(CAM) and center defensive mids(CDM). The names say it all. CAMs attack while CDMs defend. The outside midfield players are left(LM) and right mids(RM). They help spread the play to the outside and they help on the attack. They also have a variant, but it is associsated with the forwards. Forwards: left(LW) and right wings(RW) are the attacking versions of LM and RM. They are usually fast and very skilled dribblers. They attack and cross, chipped pass to the middle, the ball in for strikers. They do not play much possession except in the attacking third. Striker(ST) are the most important part of scoring. These are generally the best scorers on the team, not always though. Their only job is to score. It too has a veriant. The center forward(CF) is slightly positioned different. A CF plays in between a CAM and a ST. its like a middle ground for each. Not quite a possession position, but more so than a ST.

Post Game Stats: After each game I include stats for the game. Shots is the number of sots a team too during the match. This helps with understanding how dominate a team is on offense. Corner kicks is when the defender or goalie kicks the ball over his own base line out of bounds. This helps determine how much pressure one team is applying on offense. Fouls is the number of fouls and tells how aggressive each team is playing.

Location: Stamford Bridge, Chelsea, London, England Actors: Actors are people who play a significant roles within a figured world. The referees play a part by keeping the players in line and judging boundaries. The coaches determine strategy for the game: Jose Mourinho is the coach of Chelsea and he is one of the best coaches in the world right now. He has never lost a game at Stamford Bridge. The players ultimately win or lose the game: Czech is one of the best goalie in the world. He is a big part of Chelseas defense. Manchester United has two of the best strikers in the world in Rooney and Van Persie, but both of them are hurt Artifacts: These are physical items and emotions/feelings, which are importat to the soccer games. The soccer ball: it is what they use to play the worlds most recognized sport. Who doesnt know what a soccer ball is? You go anywhere in Europe and you're bound to find kids playing soccer. When you love the game like many people do, you just cant resist not playing with a soccer ball when you see one. The jerseys: Each team has their own jersey design that signifies which team the players are on. They signify home or away sometimes. A team might be known for a certain color so they may wear their home jersey on the road as long as the other team is not wearing the same color. Numbers: Some numbers are not just their to signify a player. Some numbers have a tradition of being worn by the best players. Lionel Messi wears #10. he is the best player now and possibly ever, that is up for debate. Juan Mata used to wear 10, Rooney still does, and my favorite player Landon Donovan wears 10. Donovan is not considered great, but he is an incredible play maker and he is just smart. He knows what to do during games at any time. He is the best American player ever. He is not recoginized as much on a global scale because he plays in the American soccer league instead of anywhere else. He wants to promote our league as apposed to the world's leagues. He has sacrificed a lot just to support the United States.

Discourse Communities: These are groups with shared interest and way of communicating within the figure world. The two main communities are the teams: Each team plays a different style with a different formation. Coaching staffs: Each club has their coaching staff. They try to outwit each other throughout the game with formations and substitutes. The fans: the fans are there to cheer their teams on and try to motivate them to win. Teams are the most important discourse commnity. They determine the outcome of the games. Refferees are another community. They are there to make sure games do not get out of hand. They also determine if a ball has crossed the line either in the goal or out of bounds.

Literacy Practices: Things that are done by discourse communities that are spoken, written, or gestured that helps them to communicate. Passing: This being a high level teams, ball possession is usually a very important part of their games. They work the ball around and try to find a point in the defense to attack. Shooting: Shooting is required for a team to win unless something crazy happens where the ball just roll into the goal. Shooting is one of the most awesome displays of soccer you will see. They can use pure power or finesse to beat the keeper and score. Stoppage time: This is played because soccer clocks never stop. If there is an injury they just add time on the end of halfs. Half time: after 45 minutes and stopagge time, both teams get a 15 minute break to rest and reevaluate their strategies. Not all of the players are known by their actual names. Some of the names will contain there first name only, and nickname, or a first name and middle name. He kicks it up the field and after ball bounces back in forth between both teams, but Chelsea is finally able to gain possession. The ball is working to Etoo on the right side and he makes a beautiful off-ball juke and makes the defender jump. After the restart luiz gets a yellow card for a dangerous tackle when he hits Danny Welbeck after the ball was passed away. Neither team keeps much possession until 21 minutes in when Chelsea works it around the field and eventually to hazard on the left wing who dribbles by his defender and crosses the ball in to what would have been a goal until it took a deflection off the defense. Next Evra comes off injured and Smalling comes in. Chelsea keep possession and just work the ball around slowly. Since they are up by three there is no need to pressure up as much. With a loss, Man U go further behind the top 4 and have almost no chance of making up the ground in the league table. 81 minutes: Man U free kick just outside the box. Liverpool is in total control. 36: Everton with possession and they almost get a shot off, but the passes arent always the most clean. Everton regains possession and gets the ball up but theres a foul. No card for the player who commited the foul, but for Pienaar who was nowhere near the play. He was arguing with the referee. Its very back and forth and sloppy right now. Both team are not keeping control very well until Everton finally gets it and Miralles is able to attack the right side and almost get a cross in. Its defelted for a corner. They conrer taken and is deflected for antoher corner which comes to nothing. 42 minutes: Everton had the ball in the attacking third, but they lose the ball and Pienaar commits a foul. Everton cant get anything going. They are defending Liverpool well at the moment, but their attack is sloppy. 45 minutes: 3 minutes of stoppage time. Pienaar takes it down the left side and crosses the ball in to Barry who shoots but is block by a defender. 45 minutes: Everton comes out tryong to make up ground. Not working well so far with Liverpool pushing them back all the way to Howard in goal. They manage to get the ball up field, but this Liverpool defense is staying strong and keeping them out. Everton is shooting and crossing, but he defense is

blocking it all. Everton finally gets a clean shot in, but it is blocked by Minolet. An amazing save, diving through the air and hitting the ball out of his box. 49 minutes: Suarez steals the ball and outruns the two defenders and shoots in along the ground and far post out of the reach of the keeper. 4-0. On the restart Everton tries to chip it up to Mirallas, but he fouls Cissikho while trying to get the ball. Everton is trying to stay positive and score, but they cant get it in. 53 minutes: Sterling gets a through ball and hits by Howard, but Howard is called for tripping him. Its a penalty, but I do not agree. Sterling appears to jump over Howard and then fall without making enough contact to have been a foul. Sturridge is taking the penalty to try to get a hat trick. He shoots it way over the goal. 57 minutes: Everton has the ball and is trying to do something with it. It gets knocked aroud between both team until Everton gains possession and is able to attack. Once again it comes to nothing. At this point the game is over. There is basically no use in the teams playing anymore. Liverpool has total control over the game. No matter what Everton does it is defended well by Liverpool. 62 minutes: Everton has the ball in Liverpools half, but it goes out for a goal kick. Liverpool is not passing as cleanly as they did in the first half, but they still keep the ball. Everton is trying to do something, but there is always one bad pass or one bad dribble or a defender blocks their pass. Everything is going bad for them. 67 minutes: Sterling almost gets to a ball that was kicked over the top of Evertons defense, but it is just too far away and goes to Howard. He dribbles down the side with the dfender all over him and he shoots and it misses badly. 72 minutes: the action has picke up a little. Liverpool gets in the box of Everton. Coutinho crosses to Sterling who shanks on the volley. 77 minutes: Liverpool gets a goal kick after Everton almost gets a goal. The ball was crossed in on the ground and it was just too far for the Everton striker. Evertin still pushing forward, moves the ball to the left side where they win a throw in. they retain possession but that comes to nothing. Liverpool trying to score again pushes forward. They lose the bll out of bounds for a goal kick. One good thing about this match is effort both teams are putting forth even though it is a blowout. 90 minutes: 3 minutes of stoppage time. Update on the Lukaku injury, ligament damage in his ankle. His absence in the game is a huge impact. He is the leading scorer for Everton so not having him costs Everton some goal threat. Liverpool gets a late corner. They dont push many forward as they are winning. Interview with Austin Vandepoll at 5:41-5:55

2/5/2014

I have grown up with Austin my whole life. We have grown up playing soccer together mostly on the same team. We both have a passion for the game. The only problem is he is a Manchester United fan and I am a Chelsea fan. 1. What is your favorite team and why? My favorite team is Manchester United. My dads favorite player was ryan Giggs, and then Wayne Rooney starting doing really good and I bandwaggoned. Van Persie joined the team and he is my favorite player and he is Dutch. ( Austin is half Dutch)

2. What are your three favorite players and why? My three favorite players are Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, and Ryan Giggs. Wayne Rooney scored a lot of goals and he was like the play maker I guess. Giggs was very loyal to the team because my dad has alwazys talked higly of him and he is a play maker. Van Persie is dutch and I am dutch and he is like the greatest playerin the world.

3. How can they change tactics to make themselves better? Um they can get a new coach cause their current coach is terrible. On the bright side their team is just behind and they just need a new coach.

4. Why are you a fan of the Barclays and how does it draw you in better than oter leagues? Well, I know more of the players because I watched them longer and theyre in England and I can understand the commentary better My favorite players are in that league and I like their polayering style. 5. How do you think the league could be better or make the games more exciting Gosh I dont know. I am plenty excited by it, but I wish the games wouldn't end in draws so you dont watch a 90 minute game and feel like it was a waste.
