Weve grown up hearing about resurrection. It has become a cultural assumption for most Americans, religious or not. Even people who have no religious foundation speak of those who have died going to a better place. We presuppose that there is something more waiting for us beyond that experience we call death. If we think back to the time of the first Easter, the morning of Jesus resurrection, we might be surprised to find that most of Jesus contemporaries held no such assumptions. Most of them believed that death was the end to a persons existence. If anything, they proclaimed that one lived on in ones descendants. As far as some continued existence of individual consciousness beyond death, though, most of Jesus contemporaries could not bring themselves to embrace such an idea. Then everything changedstarting with a small group of people who had followed Jesus before he was brutally executed. The gospel accounts of the experience at the empty tomb differ from each other. In addition, they do not all feature appearance stories of Jesus encountering his disciples beyond that Easter morning. Surprisingly, the strongest evidence of Jesus resurrection, in my humble opinion, is not to be found in the gospels. It is found many days or weeks afterwards. It is not found in the mystical appearances of Jesus, the empty tomb, or on the road to Emmaeus. It is found in those knuckleheads that so resemble you and me! Peter goes from betrayal to fearless messenger. Thomas goes from doubter to evangelist. James goes from hiding in the shadows to leading the early church. The reality of the resurrection was a matter of absolute certainty for these disciples! While walking with Jesus reformed religion, seeing the risen Christ transformed the religious. While hearing the teachings of Jesus reformed beliefs, touching the risen Christ transformed people of faith. While working with Jesus reformed ministry, being touched by the risen Christ transformed communities. While the stories of the empty tomb and the post-crucifixion appearances of Jesus were amazing, there were after all, stories. They could be considered fables, myths, lies, or great revelations depending on the disposition of the listener. The evidence of the resurrection comes, ultimately, through the transforming power it brought into the lives of those who experienced the Risen One. The fact that Peter had been radically transformed was undeniable. The fact that James was a new person was beyond question. The faithful followers of Jesus became Christians when their encounter with the risen Christ transformed their lives. They surrendered their doubts, their fears, their guilttheir very lives under the blinding light of that experience. Now, two thousand years later, it is their testimony, conveyed more through their lives than their words, that leads us to faith. The tomb created by our doubts, our fears, our guilt, and our other human shortcomings stands empty. We hear stories all around about Christ being present to others, transforming their lives. We stand before the empty tomb and we choosego back in and roll the stone back across the entrance or step out in faith with the Risen One. Take that step, choose Christ, walk the path God has prepared, and celebrate Easter everyday!

JOY and SADNESS

Joy . . . . Our Associate Minister announced at the April 6th service that she, Aaron and Zachary will be expanding their family. We wish the Todd family a safe, healthy pregnancy and the joy and wonder of anticipating a new little one in October 2014.. Sadness . . . . It is with sadness that we accept the resignation of Debra Todd as our Associate Minister who will be leaving us no later than August 2014. Aaron, Debra, Zachary and the new little one have made the decision that it is best for them if they relocate to the Missouri/Texas area to be closer to family. We understand how difficult it is to raise a family in California due to the cost of living and understand the desire to be closer to parents, grandparents and extended family. While we are saddened by this news we support their decision and will keep them close in our prayers. During the upcoming months the Administrative Elders will be working closely with Darrell and Debra as they transition to new phases in their lives and transfer their duties to whomever the Interim Minister will be. At this time there are no plans to replace the Associate Minister position. Deb Taylor, Chair Council of Elders To the congregation of First Christian Church, Three years ago I sat in the office of Susan Gonzales-Dewey to talk about the opportunities in ministry available in the PSWR as my husband was accepting a call to serve Pasadena Christian Church. After a brief conversation, Susan had a big smile on her face and said Let me tell you about First Christian Church in Fullerton... and that is how our journey together started. I remember the immediate connection I felt with the members of my search committee, and in turn, with the entire congregation. The fact that I was pregnant and would need to take leave a short two months after beginning our journey together did not damper the connection we all felt, and helped me to be filled with excitement at the possibilities for ministry. It is amazing how life comes full circle. Last Sunday I announced that Aaron and I, are expecting our second child, due October 11. We are beyond excited and, I admit, a little anxious at trying to raise two kids without any family nearby. Over the last few months Aaron and I have spent an extended time in prayer and discernment and have come to realize that with the birth of our second child we really need to be closer to families in Missouri and Texas. So it is with a great deal of sadness that I announce that our family will be moving at some point this summer, no later than August 2014. At this point we do not know our next steps in regards to jobs or housing. We have both entered the Search and Call process and hope to find a call(s) somewhere along the I-35 corridor between Kansas City, MO and Dallas, TX. Words will never do justice to express my gratitude to this congregation. During my time here I have begun to find my voice as a preacher and teacher. I have been given the freedom to try new things, and been shown immense grace when things we have tried have failed, or not gone as planned. You have walked beside me as I made my first steps as a mother, and helped to raise Zachary with love and faith. No matter where we go, you all will always be a part of my story, an important part of helping me on my journey in ministry. I give thanks that we still have time to do ministry together, to have coffee or lunch, and to continue to share special moments in our lives. Know that when our paths do diverge that I am taking each of you with me in small and powerful ways and will leave with thoughts filled with laughter and love. Grace and Peace, Rev. Debra Todd

Looking For A Sunrise Service?

If you are looking for a site to attend a Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday, April 20, you are invited to go to Forest Lawn Covina Hills for the annual service they provide for the community. The service begins at 6 A.M. The guest preacher will be Dr. Ben Bohren, recently retired Regional Minister for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Northern California. Before that, Ben was Pastor of our sister church, First Christian Church, Orange, and was the Director of Church Relations at Chapman University where he was the key figure in the development of the very successful DOC Student program, i.e. Disciples on Campus. Several of our members know Ben personally. Also participating at this service will be members of the Mountainside Master Chorale, of which Ed Linberg is a member. Forest Lawn, Covina Hills, is just off the 10 freeway, west of the 57 freeway, at Via Verde. At that exit you will make a left turn to go under the freeway. It leads directly into the gate of Forest Lawn Covina Hills. The service will conclude by 7 A.M., so you'll have plenty of time to get back to Fullerton for our 10:15 A.M. worship service. Seniors Meet Tuesday, April 15, 2014

The Seniors are meeting this coming Tuesday, April 15 at 12:00 pm in Chapman Lounge. Our speaker for the day is Nancy Gordon. Nancy is the Director of the Center for Spirituality and Aging at California Christian Homes and will speak about her role as the Director and topics of interest to seniors. Be sure to bring you lunch, drinks and dessert are provided, and join us as we fellowship together.
The U.N. estimates 11 percent of the worlds population still doesnt have access to clean drinking water. Yafeti Hia, a father of five, was one of them. Along with their jobs at a rubber plantation and caring for their five kids Hia and his wife had to walk nearly a half-mile to collect clean water. If there wasn't enough time, the family resorted to gathering water from puddles. It got worse during the dry season. CWS worked with Hias village and together determined that having a water source close by was the best approach. We helped Hia and several other families build a well in their village, and provided support so they could build a latrine keeping the family safe. Their lives have been transformed be what support people like you made possible. We're working to raise an additional $25,000 for our water programs by Friday, to ensure that clean water is available to more people like Hia. We could use your help.

Have we got a deal for you!! The Outreach Ministry Team has partnered with Equal Exchange to make available to you fairly traded, organic products that benefit small farmers and small producers in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. That makes for one GREAT cup of coffee, terrific glass of tea, and delicious home made cookies. The Fair Trade and organic teas come from India, Sri Lanka, and South Africa; many blends are available for purchase at the table in the narthex after the 8:00 and 10:15 A.M. services. And for all you chocoholics we have a wide variety of dark and milk chocolate products that combine cacao from farmer coops in Latin America, sugar from co-ops in Paraguay, and fairly traded vanilla from Madagascar. We are selling products to benefit these small farmers, so stop by after service for a small nosh of coffee or a piece of chocolate. Check out the catalog and see the tempting delicacies that are available for purchase. Purchasing these products benefits the small farmer, workers, and artisans by raising and stabilizing their incomes and allowing them to be in charge of their own future. By purchasing Fair Trade products, the small-scale farmer earns more and you get a better value for your money. Please consider stopping by our table to have a sample of coffee, look at the catalog, and buy something that could make a huge difference in the lives of so many people. This is an on-going effort on the part of the Outreach Ministry, so we will always have an order form available to you. Supplies are available in the church office if you would like to purchase during the week.

Week of Compassion

Following poem reprinted from the Park Place Christian Church newsletter
Between Parades
Were good at planning! Give us a task force and a project and were off and running! No trouble at all! Going to the village and finding the colt, even negotiating with the owners is right down our alley. And how we love a parade! In a frenzy of celebration we gladly focus on Jesus and generously throw our coats and palms in his path. And we can shout praise loudly enough to make the Pharisees complain. Its all so good! Its between parades that we dont do so well. From Sunday to Sunday we forget our hosannas Ann Weems

In the first three months of 2014, WoC has offered assistance to congregations in fifteen states dealing with local disasters ranging from church fires to storm damage, from chemical spills to mudslides, from gas explosions to food shortages - and more. Easter Lilies

This Sunday and next Sunday--Palm/Passion Sunday and Easter Sunday--we will be receiving the 2014 Easter Offering. This offering will undergird the General Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Our goal is $1,500. Our Thursday afternoon Bible Study group, led by Chris Fee, is using the Lenten Bible study, "Living Waters," developed by Dr. Rick Lowrey, a noted Disciples' scholar and teacher. In week three of this study Dr. Lowrey brought Isaiah 35 to our consciousness. This passage is fairly well known. It anticipates the new life that will arrive with God's gift of a Messiah. It speaks of a "highway in the desert." (v.8) This highway shall be for God's people who will "come to Zion with singing." (v.10a) It also declares that "the eyes of the blind shall be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped." (v.5) It promises that "waters shall break forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert" (v.6b.) Read the whole passage to get the message of hope that Isaiah provides both to his contemporaries living in ancient Israel and to people today. Lowrey brings this ancient text into the present with the following statement. "Keeping with the holistic vision of Isaiah 35, the ministries of our General Church bring a passion for human justice and freedom together with a concern for the sustainable flourishing of the earth through a variety of projects and educational opportunities. Among them are the Ikengo Agricultuaral Center and various clean water projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Another is the "Loving People Wells" project in Anhui Province, China and the Zhoukou Church lay training and tree project that teaches Christians throughout China, via internet and on-site classes, how to set up profitable and sustainable agricultural enterprises to fund the mission of their churches and to model eco-friendly agricultural practices." These are but two examples of the many projects supported by the Division of Overseas Ministries that help people to build new lives for themselves and their communities. We make these things, and many more, happen with our gifts to the 2014 Easter Offering. On Sunday, you'll find an insert in your bulletin about the Easter Offering. Please read it carefully to learn more about the work that has been done, and will be done, because of our Special Easter Offering. You'll also find an envelope for your use in giving to the 2014 Easter Offering. Place your gift in the envelope so it will be designated for the Easter Offering. II you choose to write a check, be sure to note the words "Easter Offering" on the memo line. Thank you, in advance, for your generous support of the 2014 Easter Offering on either April 13 or April 20. The Outreach Ministry
