What is article?

An article is a word that combines with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun. The article in English are the, a or an and in some context some. There are two types of article which is indefinite articles and definite articles. Indefinite articles a and an is used for indefinite singular count nouns and some is used for indefinite plural count noun or non-count nouns. Definite article is used for either definite singular and plural count nouns or non-count nouns. Nouns can be used in two ways. 1. A noun is indefinite when you and your listener do not have a specific person, place or thing in mind. Examples: Give me a book. -which is not specify what book is to be given. 2. A noun is definite when you and your listener both know which person, place or thing you are talking about. Examples: Give me the book. -it refers to a specific book whose identity is known.

When to use article a or an? Use a before consonant sound Use an before vowel sound It is the sound, not the letter that determine whether to use a or an. Examples: - Im reading a book. -It is an exciting story. Do not confuse with the first letter: an honest, an umbrella, an apple a university, a European

Use no article or some with plural count nouns or non-count nouns that are indefinite. -I need to buy some food. To identify someone or something use; a or an for singular count nouns -Hes a chef. No article for plural count nouns or non-count nouns -Theyre beans, Im making soup. To make general statement with plural count nouns or non-count nouns use; No article or some -I like some stories but a lot of them are boring. Use definite articles the for nouns that are definite: a) a person, place or thing which is unique-only one -The moon was shining brightly b) The context makes it clear which person, place or thing you mean -A: Who is she? B: Shes the teacher. c) The noun is mentioned for the second time. -They ate a cake. The cake was delicious. d) A phrase or adjective -He was the best hunter in the country. Adjectives often go directly before a noun: We read the first story in the book.

Adjectives go between article and noun: He has some beautiful old books.
