Date and Name of Event 481-511: Franks move into Gaul

Justification of Significance During the Roman Empire, the Franks established a kingdom under Clovis after he defeated the Romans. He was the founder of France and made Paris the capital.

16431715: Louis XIV

The Sun King became king when he was very young and held the longest rule in European history. He was very powerful, winning wars, gaining a lot of territory, and developing French culture such as dance and art. It was the height of an absolute monarchy. He also improved parts of the government such as judicial structure and law enforcement. 1789: Started with French reforms over Revolutio financial crisis and n feudal system. Ended the absolute monarchy, First Republic is established, king is executed.

19141918: WWI

Germany declared war when France would not accept neutrality over the Russo-German conflict. Germany was stopped by the Anglo-French and finally gave up since not much was happening. 1 million French soldiers killed, 4 million wounded. 1940: WWII

France declared war against Nazi Germany, Germany occupied and defeated France. It made a new government called Vichy France. DeGaulle led the Free French Forces to resist Germany. France was freed at D-Day in 1944.

He gave independence to Algeria, withdrew from the NATO, and promoted development of French atomic weapons. The Fifth Republic is still Frances government to this day. 2002: Euro bills and coins used in France

The Euro replaced the Franc which was used since 1360. It is the currency used by 18 of the European Unions members so it helps Frances economy.

Made it harder for low-skilled migrants to find jobs. Some can get a skills and talents permit if they can prove they are an asset to the French economy. They also must sign an integration contract saying they will accept French way of life. Many are getting deported and leftists think this is unfair. France has a high Muslim population.
