God is Creative Spirit, everywhere present, eternally here. In Him is all life, intelligence, goodness, holiness and truth. He knows no want. He suffers no pain. He is unlimited in time, space and circumstance. Man, child of God, is divine spirit shares His resources, lives, moves and has his !eing in God, as an infinite sea. There is one !od and Father of all" who is over all" through all" and in all.# "s His child, therefore, I am pure spirit # free from ills of !ody, mind and soul. In pure spirit, I live, move and have my !e# ing. I am perfect, even as my $ather in heaven is perfect. %he !reath which I !reathe is the !reath of the Spirit. %he food which I eat is the gift of the Spirit, and it fills me with the strength of the Spirit. %he consciousness of the perfect spirit is mine, and I know it and feel it flowing through my whole !eing, !ringing with it strength" power and perfect peace. %he Spirit of the &ord is upon me, and I feel His presence all around me, in me, and through me. I am free from all sickness, worry and fear. 'erfect love casts out all fear from me # and $ am free. Health" hope" peace" life" love" truth and plenty are mine. %hese, I claim from God. %hese, in the name of Christ, I now re# ceive. I render thanks for the perfect gift.

~ INT,OD*CTION ~
%here is a law of healing so plain that even a child can under# stand it so fundamental that the a!lest mind has never yet thought through all the facts and phenomena of life that rest upon it. It is the purpose of this !ook to make this law plain. %he greatest power in the world is the power of thought # for it is Creative Mind in action. (othing e)ists that did not first e)ist in thought, from the first sun that !la*ed, only in the Mind of the Creator, to the last doll#dress, fashioned !y a childish hand. Sci# ence supports the fact that the first movement in nature can have come only from the application of an immaterial force or +ill to the primary etheric particles, otherwise in a perfect state of e,ui# li!rium. It must leave to metaphysics, not only an e)planation of the +ill that moves, !ut also the su!stance that is moved. %his, then, it is the province of this !ook to show, with all that it entails. Since an act of +ill is an act of Mind, we concern ourselves with the activity of a Creative Mind. "gain, since Mind acts cre# atively, there is a way in which it acts. +e must also, therefore, teach the way. It is to teach this way, that the -i!le was written that .esus lived and taught. %his way has !een known for many centuries, !ut has always !een taught in terms of the understanding of the day in which the teacher lived. %he Great Metaphysician taught largely in para# !les and oriental figures of speech. -ut He taught /%he +ay,/ and his followers were called the 0'eople of the +ay.1

0%he +ay/ is the &aw # and today, the understanding of it as law ena!les us to put, in a few simple statements, which all can understand, the principles of the law which, if learned and used, will ena!le anyone to control the conditions of his !ody, mind and environment. %nyone can learn how to use it. It is clear to us that it is natural to use the power of Mind, and that the greatest happiness results from its e)ercise. Mind is so constituted, that it must act # it must e&press that which it feels itself to be. "ll nature points to the fact that, wherever action ceases, death, or negation, !egins. Mind is the very spirit of the life in nature and therefore, is eternally active. 2et, it is also infinite repose # for it is that" out of which all activity springs, and !y which it is sustained. In this !ook, we are not dealing so much with that great po# tential of activity, which we call being" as with the law !y which it acts. +e are concerned, not so much with the contemplation of the &ife, &ove and +isdom, which is God or -eing, as with the way 'pirit manifests. How life !ecomes health how love !e# comes happiness and how wisdom !ecomes wealth # we desire to know. "s these are all ,ualities of Mind, and in their pure state are undifferentiated into form, we reali*e that, when they !egin to pass out into individual e)pression, it must !e !y the process of thinking. %hat is the only way Mind can act. So that the Creative process is simply Mind in "ction - or Mind thinking its &ife, &ove and +isdom into form. Mind in "ction is always creative, !ut it is also thought. %hought acts in Mind to create. 3r Mind first produces thought, and then reacts to it, to !ecome that which it has thought. %his is the whole law of creation. (ind creates what it thinks. %he many forms pass out of the one Mind, !ut each form has a correspond# ing thought, which produces and sustains it. Mind in "ction is, therefore, also the &aw. +e call it the &aw of Cause and 4ffect. &aw is the principle on which Mind works. $or every primary cause is in the mind # and the effect is simply the form, which thought has taken.
SAM.LE CO.1 +++"Seed8O$8Li$e8.u2lis#in'" om

~ THE LAW OF MIND IN ACTION ~

%hought is first cause, in any created series # and form is ef# fect. %hought acts upon Mind to produce things. Since things are made out of Mind, they are simply thought in form - !ut they maintain form and reality, only so long as they are sustained !y the thought. %he &aw, therefore, may !e defined as Mind in "ction, pro# ducing the many out of the one, !y the power of thought. "nd this !ook is written to furnish a daily meditation on the highest of all themes # man5s control of his own !ody, happiness, cir# cumstances and environment, !y the thoughts which he thinks. %he knowledge and use of thought and the &aw of Mind in "ction is the knowledge of which .esus spoke, when he said, )e shall know the truth" and the truth shall make you free.# May these pages free many to the glorious wisdom of Mind in "ction. METHOD OF ,EADINB & ST*D1 OF CTHE LAW OF MIND IN ACTIONC

%his !ook is written to teach the one simple law of mind # the &aw # which anyone can understand and use, and which, if used, will give freedom, 6oy, health, supply and peace to the one who uses it. %his is a !ig claim, !ut it is supported !y the -i!le, !y the Great %eacher, and !y the e)perience of thousands now living. 4verything in this !ook is !ased on the &aw outlined in &esson II, and the student is re,uested to read each chapter, and then ask himself, /How does this illustrate the &aw7 Is it true to the &aw7/ "lways do this # and you will soon know the &aw for yourself and can use it, and teach it to others. %hus, you will !e# come a master of life. %his !ook is designed, also, to stimulate your own thinking and investigation. It is not e)pected that the !eginner will grasp the full significance of all the principles, at one reading. It is for meditation. *ead and think. Make a study of life, !ooks, news# papers, men and events, with reference to this &aw, and you will find thousands of illustrations of it. +hen you can reduce all the phenomena of life to this &aw, you have !ecome a great philosopher. If you are entering on this kind of study for the first time, do not allow offense at some one statement to discourage your further reading. 'erhaps you have not yet understood it, in the way it was meant. 'erhaps it is so new a view, that you do not want to !elieve it, yet. Go on read# ing and studying, and make your own decisions. should never accept it all, you can still get help, and find health and peace. " close study of these lessons will reveal to the student that they are not !rought together !y a chance arrangement, !ut are consecutive. $irst, we have the meaning and definition of metaphysics and the &aw. %hen, the general principles of its applica# tion are given. %hese, in turn, are followed !y the philosophy of metaphysics. $ourth, we have an e)planation of the reason for certain men# tal attitudes and how the &aw applies this is a study in cause and effect. $ifth, we consider the &aw, as related to the "!solute and the 'ersonal Spirit. Si)th, and finally, we devote our atten# tion to specific methods and treatments. %hese should all !e studied systematically. %oo much empha# sis cannot !e laid on the necessity of systematic study. " mere smattering of metaphysics will never satisfy the demands of the day, nor the inner re,uirements of the &aw. +e have a great !ody of truth. %he world is an)ious to know why we !elieve and teach what we do. (o science in the world, no philosophy is more complete or comprehensive. +e must learn it so complete# ly, that we can teach it with the utmost simplicity # as .esus taught it. 8o not, therefore, go 6umping a!out in your study. " good principle of study is to read the !ook clear through once, if you wish to get a general view of the principles, so that you may know 6ust a!out what goal you are driving toward after that, confine yourself each day to one lesson # and know it. Think more than you read. Masterful study puts more between the lines than it takes from the lines. %his is to stimulate your own think# ing. %hus, you will !ecome a master teacher of life. %he word /treatment,/ as used in this !ook, is a synonym for reali+ation or perception. It is useless to ,uarrel with language. It is - and there5s an end to it. %he word treatment has !ecome sufficiently populari*ed to mean, to the general pu!lic, what the teacher of the 0a!solute1 means, !y some other favorite term # and it is safe to predicate that this term will !e supported !y fu# ture, as well as present, usage.

~ THE LAW OF MIND IN ACTION ~

In time, the student will arrive at that point of consciousness where he will not need the formulated treatment. He will then form his own statement. 9ltimately, he will !e a!le to /speak the word, only,/ and it will !e done unto him, even as he thinks. %he advanced metaphysician heals entirely !y the word - he reaches the point where he actually does perceive the truth that is to make him free.

~ META.H1SICS 8 WHAT IT IS & DOES ~

%he word metaphysics, as its composition indicates, denotes something above the physical # meta" meaning over and physics" referring to forms of matter. So that to work upon the metaphysical plane means to employ laws that transcend physical means or agencies. It is, then, to push our way !ack of the thing that we see, which we call the 0manifestation,1 until we find the cause of the manifestation. It is the search for the 9ltimate Cause and the law !y which the Spirit creates a world and !rings material o!6ects and physical life into manifestation. 3ur study of applied metaphysics is designed to make clear these factsK In the !eginning, there is only Mind or Spirit. +hatever is made, therefore, must !e made out of Mind. Mind can act only !y thinking therefore, it is thought that takes the su!stance called mind and molds it into form. God makes a world out of himself. "s everything in the cosmos starts in thought and manifests in form, creation is the process !y which the activity takes place. +e may call it evolution or we may call it law. -y law, we mean the method Spirit follows in making things. %his is the &aw of Cause and 4ffect whether it !e in the making of a planet

or a man # the thought is the cause" and the manifestation is the effect. 4ven the so#called laws of the physical universe are simply the activity of this one law, in some form. W#at It Does Metaphysics, therefore, teaches us how we may govern our !odies, our world and our happiness, !y the thoughts we think for it declares that man reproduces the creative method and that what is true in the macrocosm or universe is true in the microcosm or individual # that thoughts become things. "nd it claims that, !y ac,uiring the knowledge of the law and !y working in harmony with it, man can !e freed from limitations of all kinds. 3ur su!se,uent studies will reveal that the creative mind in man and the creative mind in the universe are not two # !ut rather essentially, one. %he value of this understanding is that we may use universal creative forces to secure the good we desire, without feeling that we have to create. +e do not make the law # we use it, and it does our work for us. "ll healing, accordingly, is divine. /It is done unto us, even as we will/ # it is not done by us. Human will originates its own ideas # !ut 8ivine Mind creates. %he healer is not the source, !ut the channel not the light, !ut the window not the electricity, !ut the wire. He is the teacher, who will guide to the truth, until the patient learns the way for himself. So, all metaphysical healing is !ased on the principle that the !ody of man and his affairs are created !y the mind, which can either !uild or destroy, and that this mind is controlled !y thought. .esus was the Supreme Metaphysician, !ecause He could speak the word of authority to mind so positively that, when He said, /:ise, and take up thy !ed,/ the paralytic did as was commanded him to do. It is evident that .esus used a law that is open to the use of every!ody. %he constitution of man has not changed nor his essential nature, and so today men are demonstrating this power. I count it as the greatest work that today engages the attention of mankind # not the mere healing, !ut the advancement of the knowledge of these things, in a world of need.

Metap#ysi s 8 A S ien e $or it is a knowledge, or as we say, a science or philosophy. "nd it takes a real mind to understand it. Metaphysics engages the mind. +e must think, and rich and fruitful are the results of logical thinking. -y it, we move !ack along the path of history and science and logical deduction into the realm of 3riginal Causation. +e find ourselves entering into the field where all is Spirit, in the !eginning of things. +e see the Spirit or Cosmic Mind taking the initial step in the creation of the universe. +e are at a period before su!stance or matter is in e)istence, so that we know that the "ll#3riginating Mind could have !ut one mode of activity # that of thought. -y the process of thought, Spirit pro6ects a su!stance as universal as itself, which we call ether. -y acting upon ether, the Creative Mind !rings into !eing planetary systems, earth and all its myriad forms and life. %o test this, we may reverse the process of our thought, and !egin with science. +e take so#called matter, and analy*e it into its constituent elements to the molecule, then to the atom, then to the aeon, then to the electron, and finally to primary ether, which science declares to !e the ultimate source of matter. (ow science cannot tell whence came this ultimate su!stance, nor how it received its energy. %hat is the task of metaphysics, and metaphysics meets the pro!lem s,uarely, !y declaring energy to !e the thought of the Creative Mind. T#e *nderlyin' *nity So that whatsoever way we approach our su!6ect, we find an underlying unity to all things # ether" from the material standpoint mind" from the mental. -ack of all things, then, is the 8ivine Mind or Spirit, through whose concept the world springs into e)istence. +e thus find ourselves living in an idealistic universe a universe which, in its essential nature, is purely spiritual and therefore su!6ect to the control of thought, alone. %his is the underlying unity, which relates all parts to the great whole # man and nature to the 8ivine Mind, which !rought all into e)istence.

It was the great achievement of Moses to discover this underlying unity, or rather to learn it from the ancient 4gyptian priesthood, and reveal it to the Israelite people. It is the greatest fact or precept of the 3ld %estament, which led .esus, when asked which was the greatest commandment, to ,uote these words, /Hear, 3 Israel, the &ord thy God # the &ord is one./ It is the work of metaphysics to show that man can put himself into harmony with this 3ne 3riginating Source, and work in unison with the Creative 'urpose, and thus !e a!le to accomplish all things. ,EALIDATION $ am now entered into the consideration of the greatest theme that ever engaged the intellect of man" for $ am making no less a study than the ,ay of !od with men. $" therefore" claim from the -ivine $ntelligence that makes and sustains the universe" the necessary mental capacity and intuition to perceive the great truths of metaphysics. $ hold that only the truth will appeal to me and that no error of false .udgment will be able to enter my mind to stay there. /o previous thought or pre.udice shall be allowed to influence me against reason in my study of the new order. $ dare to go all the way with truth0 for Truth is !od" and !od is all. ~ THE ONE LAW WE NEED TO !NOW ~

%here is one law supreme to this system of life. Sometimes, we call it the &aw of Cause and 4ffect. Sometimes, we speak of it as the method !y which spirit passes into manifestation. 'sychologists fre, uently speak of it as the &aw of Suggestion. 4very teacher of metaphysics spends his time, either in giving his interpretation of it or in e)plaining some truth that is related to it. 3ur happiness and success in life are measured !y the degree to which, either consciously or unconsciously, we are o!edient to the re,uirements of this law. It is the law that we cannot !reak, !ut we can !e !roken, !y trying to !reak it. It is the law !y which /"s ye sow, ye also shall reap./ %hrough it, /It shall !e done unto you, according to your faith./ It e)plains why, /"s a man thinketh in his heart, so is he./ It is the !asis of the &aw of Correspondences. It is the activity of Creative Mind # neither good nor !ad # !y which we create our own heaven and our own hell. It is the secret of all tragedy and all comedy. It is the touchstone to truth, and he who knows it and employs it wisely is the emancipated soul and a master on the path. &et the student, therefore, learn the following principles, which constitute the law, that through the knowledge, he may

o!tain the mastery of fate, and control the conditions of life and destiny for no less a power is in the hands of him who learns and wisely employs this law. "ll must use it, !ecause we live !y it # !ut how few use it wisely. T#e La+ >. %he first principle of this law is that of the universal presence of intelligence that we live, move and have our !eing in a vast sea of life, !oth visi!le and invisi!le that this intelligent life is not only around us !ut is in us even more, it not only is around and in us, !ut it is the su!stance, as well, of which all things Lincluding our !odiesM are composed. %his statement is supported, alike, !y revelation, as in the -i!le !y science, as in psychology or chemistry and !y philosophy, as in our lesson on Spirit. -efore there was a visi!le universe, which we call /(ature,/ there must, of necessity, have !een an invisi!le universe, which we call Spirit or 'ower. %he orderly way in which It arranged the visi!le universe, which It created, shows that It was and is a +onderful Intelligence. Since Spirit was Land isM all" it had nothing else than itself out of which to make a world. It, therefore, had to fashion a su!stance for its own !ody # the universe # out of itself, or Spirit. Since Spirit is Intelligence, of necessity, the su!stance which it !rought forth must share its nature. "nd all life must manifest the life of Spirit, since it proceeds from it. "ll science is agreed that life has never !een discovered that did not come from antecedent life, so that we can move !ack from the life of (ature to the life from which it is derived, or (ature5s God. "ccordingly, (ature and the life in (ature are one and the same thing, and we live in a universe which is literally alive. D. +e see, therefore, that this 9niversal Intelligence is also creative. It is the power that makes things and is the intelligence that molds original su!stance and holds it in form. "s in man, the su!6ective or impersonal mind !uilds new life cells, day !y day, and takes care of the growing life of the child and the renewing life of maturity, so in (ature, the Creative Mind is !usy !uilding ever more stately mansions for its dwelling place.

(ew universes are !eing flung out across the vast a!yss of space new stars !egin to gleam, as they launch out on their ageless 6ourney around some distant sun the earth upon which we tread is growing daily, through the addition of cosmic dust, and daily changing in its internal structure new forms of life are appearing or old are altering flowers are !looming into life to !reathe their !eauty on the !reast of nature and we live in a world of life # ever#renewing, ever#changing, ever#evolving into higher e)pression of the e)haustless energy of Creative Mind. %he second part of our law, therefore, calls attention to the fact that we not only live in a world of intelligence, !ut that this intelligence is constantly creating. /-ehold, I make all things new./ In this is man5s hope and his power to act. %his life is the life of the Creative Spirit, Intelligence or Mind, and therefore, we perceive that It emerges into form to en6oy its own 'ower#to# &ive. +hen we think, it is Spirit thinking through us when we utter a truth, it is Spirit putting out into e)pression a thought from its limitless 'ower#to#%hink when we !reathe, it is Spirit !reathing us. E. %his creative intelligence acts upon the impress of the strongest impression, thought or image made upon it. +hen man emerges in consciousness out of this vast sea of life, as a wave runs upon the !osom of the ocean, he rises sufficiently high to ena!le him to perceive that there is an ocean. %hus, Spirit fulfills a purpose in !ecoming man, !y ena!ling Itself, through !ecoming the particular, to perceive Itself in its "ll#ness. Man is spirit come forth out of the formless into form out of the timeless into time out of the limitless into certain limitations # and yet, as man, spirit never loses its power to draw upon its resources as Spirit. %herefore, we must recogni*e that all the power of the universe is !ack of the mind of man, when he thinks. %hen, too, we must recogni*e that there cannot !e a will in the 9niversal Mind opposed to man, for if there were, then he could not draw from the creative mind and power what he wants, e)cept !y chance. +e, therefore, recogni*e that, so far as we are

concerned, there is, !ack of us, a 9niversal Creative Mind, which desires to !ecome to us whatever we desire # that is, whatever we think into it # and which has no purposes of its own, opposed to ours. "s It creates a world !y thinking a world, Lfor Mind can act only through thoughtM, so it creates for man, himself, whatever he desires, !y acting as Creative Mind upon his thought. %his Mind, therefore, is in this aspect purely impersonal and neutral Lsee &esson AIIM. It has no purposes of its own, as opposed to ours. It is creative activity, infinitely suscepti!le, responsive to our every thought L&esson AM and is the power that !rings into e)istence, in form, whatever we fashion in thought. +e, therefore, perceive that whatever we think must make a greater or lesser impression on Creative Mind and that when we consciously use our knowledge, we make an image of the thing we desire then we present it to the Great Creative Intelligence, which !egins to act upon our suggestion, to !ring forth our good into visi!le form. %he purpose of this !ook, in the main, is to show the various phases of the activity of this law # the &aw of Creative "ctivity # !y which the creative mind !rings into form whatever we present to it, sufficiently forcefully, in thought. H. -ut there is one other feature of the &aw, which must not !e overlooked. %his is what we may term the personal side of Spirit5s activity. +hile, as law, it acts in the manner we have 6ust descri!ed and while, so far as the individual will is concerned, it does not act contrary to our purposes still, it also acts as a law of tendency. It tends to the production of higher manifestations of itself in individual e)pression and form. It is seeking its own self#e)pression, since there can !e no other motive of creation at all. Its nature is life" love and wisdom. %his, it seeks to manifest. "ccordingly, it stands !ack of man as the source of his life, love and wisdom, and is ready to /teach us all things, and guide us in the way of truth./ It not only creates, therefore, according to the thought we impress upon it as law or Impersonal Mind, !ut It !ecomes the director of man5s thought and life, whenever

we turn to it for guidance and direction in our affairs. Spirit is the power that makes things. &ike the power of electricity or the affinity that holds the atoms together or the life in the flower, it cannot !e seen, for the simple reason that Spirit is one and the same as these. +hen we see things, we perceive them as the form into which Spirit has molded itself. -ack of them lies the power that made them and supports their e)istence.
