About bps
As the birthplace of public education in this nation, the Boston Public Schools is committed to transforming the lives of all children through exemplary teaching in a world-class system of innovative, welcoming schools. We partner with the community, families, and students to develop in every learner the knowledge, skill, and character to excel in college, career, and life. Boston Public Schools seeks to to increase the cultural, racial, and linguistic diversity of our workforce to reflect the same diversity of our student population. As part of this effort, and through the implementation of the Teacher Diversity Action Plan, the Office of Human Capital provides a number of programs to recruit, retain, and support teacher candidates. These programs ensure that BPS teachers are highly effective in serving the needs of all of our learners. This year, Boston Public Schools is offering new pathways for non-licensed educators to earn their Massachusetts Teaching License and teach in Boston Public Schools. Non-licensed educators with teaching experience working with children can earn their license while applying for positions. For those aspiring educators with limited experience teaching children, BPS offers the opportunity for paid summer internships or substitute teaching positions while educators earn their license.
Pathway
For non-licensed educators with a Bachelors Degree and at least one year of teaching experience, BPS offers support this spring and summer with preparing for Massachusetts Tests of Educator Licensure (MTEL) and for earning teacher licensure. While educators are passing MTELs and earning licensure, they can apply for teaching positions. The deadline to earn licensure is August 15, 2014.
For non-licensed educators with a Bachelors Degree and at least 6 months of teaching experience, BPS offers the opportunity for a paid teaching internship in summer school, with the support of a mentor teacher.
