a master entertainer.
The New York Review of Books calls him

the indispensable critic.

For more than 60 years, Harold Bloom has been an
original mind and provocative presence on the international library scene. Born in New York City in
1930 and educated at Cornell and Yale universities,
Professor Bloom has been a dedicated educator, teaching courses at Yale since
1955. Over these decades he has been a prolific writer, too, authoring 30 major
books of literary criticism and hundreds of articles, reviews, and editorial
introductions. In addition to serving as a MacArthur Fellow and the Charles
Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry at Harvard University, Professor Bloom
received the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal for
Criticism in 1999, the Catalonia International Prize in 2002 for his lasting contribution to the humanities, the Hans Christian Andersen Bicentennial Prize
of Denmark, and Mexicos Alfonso Reyes Prize in 2003.
For more than 25 years, Chelsea House and Harold Bloom have worked together
to publish a vast collection of critical volumes. Focusing on the writers and
works most often studied in high schools and universities, Professor Bloom
has set out to chronicle and illuminate the major Western literary achievements. Covering the canonical along with the contemporary, the permanent as
well as the periodic, Blooms literary criticism is essential to every student of
literature.

About the set:
Editor: Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the
Humanities, Yale University
Blooms Classic Critical Views offers the finest
classic criticism on significant writers, placing these
enduring authors in the context of their time and
providing criticism that has proved over the years
to be the most valuable to readers and writers. Most
of the essays are from the 19th and early 20th centuriesfrom reviews in popular magazines to profound
essays by influential critics such as Henry James,
G.K. Chesterton, Matthew Arnold, and more. The
most important essays are introduced and contextualized by contemporary scholars. Each title features
an in-depth critical portrait of an essential writer
presented in a historical context, a chronology, and
an introduction by Harold Bloom.
