ENACTUS LETS CAN HUNGER CHALLENGE: PROJECT PROPOSAL GROUP MEMBERS: John Chang, Nuria Cortes, Melvin Lopez,

Andre Ulmer, John Ham BACKGROUND, PROBLEM, PURPOSE What is Enactus and what is the Lets Can Hunger Challenge? The mission statement of Enactus, an international non-profit organization, is to bring together student, academic and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. In order to achieve this mission and goal, Enactus participates in multiple activities which focus on giving back to the local community through educating individuals and performing projects in several topic areas such as (a) financial literacy, (b) success skills training, (c) business development and entrepreneurship, (d) business ethics, (e) women empowerment, and (f) environmental sustainability. This year, Enactus goal is to support the Lets Can Hunger Challenge, sponsored by the Campbell Soup Company. The goal of this campaign is to measure and demonstrate a comprehensive approach to addressing hunger, including organizing and executing food drives for urgent hunger relief and empowering those in need to defeat the cycle of hunger for lasting hunger relief. Requirements Even though few students are aware of the obstacles of hunger, the majority of university students are not informed or conscious of the issue of hunger developing in our community. Therefore, they are not involved in taking initiatives to promote hunger awareness and its impact on affected individuals. PROPOSAL, PLAN, SCHEDULE Proposal and Plan On the basis of our combined efforts and optimistic attitude, our group proposes the following plan to meet this years challenge: Cotton-Candy Sale: Our group has decided to secure monetary funds though selling cotton candy to bring the awareness of hunger to the UTD community. The reason why cotton candy was the medium of choice for sale was because through our combined opinions, experiences, and observations, we have noticed that multiple groups from the past have already sold baked goods (brownies, cookies, cupcakes) or drinks (coffee, hot chocolate, or tapioca) in an excess amount. By venturing into a new product such as cotton candy, our group can hopefully generate attention, buzz, and diversity, therefore increasing revenue. Origami Sale: In addition to selling cotton candy, our group will also be constructing and selling flower/rose/lotus origami. Since Valentines Day is a week right after our sale, we are optimistic

that a good amount of individuals from the UTD community will be interested in purchasing these particular gifts associated to Valentines Day, therefore further increasing the donations for our monetary funds. If students arent interested in Valentines Day, they can instead be interested in the complexity and uniqueness of the origami. Hunger Awareness Campaign: In addition to selling cotton candy, our booth will also contain a large poster board displaying the awareness and significant impact hunger has throughout many people in all walks of life. The poster board will contain a large slogan: People are hungry, help us help them. As students purchase the cotton candy or origami, members from our team will give a brief informational pitch to the students on the problems of hunger, the impact it has on people, and the ways they can provide assistance or aid to the individuals in need. We will also explain how the money earned from the sales will serve as a donation to provide relief. There will also be a donation box with a slogan of Put an End to Hunger for anyone who wants to support the cause. In response to the awareness campaign, students can hopefully sympathize and understand a little more about the distress and negative effects hunger has on the world and the people. Students can also hopefully become more conscious and attentive of what measures they can take in order to help improve impoverished peoples living conditions and needs. Management and implementation As a group, all individuals associated with this project will display professionalism in every aspect from the start of the group collaboration till the end. Email correspondence will require correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. We will also CC (Carbon Copy) Dr. Sluder in every email that we send to fully demonstrate our ability to be a business professional. We will treat every email as if we were part of a team in the business world. In order to successfully plan and allocate certain days in which the team will be able to meet up, collaborate, and spend time working on the project, we have implemented a visual time sheet of all available times of each individual member. If one member is busy on a certain day, he/she will be able to put what times they are free into the particular spot for that day. If each member is able to plan ahead and note their available times for each day of the week, it can save a great deal of time, therefore, promoting efficiency. As a result, when our group does get together, we can successfully boost our productivity because we know when and what we need to accomplish. All group meetings will start on time with every single member participating and giving their best ideas, effort, and attitude. In doing so, our group will be able to be professional and act with the set of standards we have established in the beginning of this project. We have also charged every group member to have the responsibility to each be individual leaders instead of choosing one leader. Every member has a right to speak their mind, concerns, or thoughts in a respectful, courteous, and upright manner in order to resolve issues or problems. As a result, our group will be able to resolve any conflict in the early stages of our collaboration without affecting the later

stages. Its always better to fix a problem swiftly, efficiently, and professionally as soon as possible. Our group will also plan and strategize into the future to forecast any possible errors, interference, or setbacks that may impede our goals from being accomplished. Each member will spend an adequate amount of time to weigh the cost and benefit of each input for every output. When deciding for decisions, our group will each have one vote, therefore, generating a democracy within our group. No one person has all the voice and power. Each individual will have authority, power, responsibility, and accountability to vote for a decision which they think will affect the group in a positive way. Outline of timetable Saturday, February 1, 2014 3:00 PM All group members will meet at the Student Union at the University of Texas at Dallas to practice using the cotton candy machine, to finish the group proposal, and to collaborate more on the project if needed.

Thursday, February 20,, 2014 11:30 AM 2:00 PM John Chang, Nuria Cortes, and John Ham will set up and start the cotton candy machine for the cotton candy fundraiser. These members will also make the booth look presentable in a professional and welcoming manner by hanging a table cloth, displaying a poster, and setting up a donation box. 2:00 PM 3:30 PM Melvin Lopez and Andre Ulmer will relieve the previous members duties and take over the cotton candy fundraiser as well as the booth. At the end of the allotted time, Melvin and Andre will clean up the booth and close shop for the day.

STAFFING Qualifications of group members From the previous semester, one of the group members, John Chang, had already taken Dr. Sluders BCOM 3311 class. As a result, he is highly informative, aware, and familiar with the Lets Can Hunger Challenge as well as Enactus goals and mission statement. After John informed the group of his previous groups success with raising monetary funds from pizza sales last semester, the group as a whole decided that it would be nice to continue raising monetary funds this semester. However, instead of selling pizza, we decided to choose a better and more unique product that can catch the attention of individuals passing by our booth.

After pitching ideas for a possible product, the group unanimously agreed that Andres cotton candy machine will meet the groups expectations and needs for being the product of choice for the fundraiser. Along with Andres expertise, experience, and knowledge of how his cotton candy machine works, the group is confident that cotton candy will produce a successful turnout. After deciding which product the group will be selling for the fundraiser, the next decision was to plan out where the location of choice will be to sell the cotton candy. Two locations instantly came up in the group collaboration. The first location was in the atrium of the Naveen Jindal School of Management while the second location was in the upper level of the Student Union. From Johns previous experience with this project, he said that since students are primarily going to class and leaving class in the JSOM, the time for students exposing themselves in the atrium was actually very minute and small. As a result, John exclaimed that his group last year had a great influx of students in between classes. However, once the students had left class or had arrived in class, the hallways were basically empty, therefore decreasing sales. Upon hearing this, all of the group members explained how in the Student Union from their personal experiences, there will always be students roaming around the hallways, the Comet Caf, or even the tables. Since the Student Union is primarily where students relax, hang out, and unwind from classes, the SU will allow our fundraiser to hopefully catch incessant attention, therefore, increasing sales and revenue. Once the location was decided to be held at the Student Union, Melvin decided to utilize his authority and position as Vice President of a business organization to reserve a table on behalf of Enactus in the Student Union. Special resources and equipment Special resources and equipment which will be required in order to successfully implement our project are listed as follows: Cotton candy machine: By selling cotton candy, our group will be able to transcend the typical products sold in the Student Union. When there are fundraisers held throughout the school year, students are accustomed to being exposed to sweets such as cupcakes, brownies, cookies, or cakes and drinks such as coffee, hot chocolate, or tapioca. By venturing into cotton candy, this product along with its wide variety of flavors will hopefully entice the attention and taste buds of individuals from the UTD community. Lotus flower origami: By selling a unique origami shaped as a lotus flower will transcend the typical products being sold in the Student Union. As a result, anyone interested in this special origami may purchase it to support our fundraiser. Donation Box: In order to fully demonstrate our knowledge, professionalism, and understanding of Enactus mission and goals, our group will construct a donation box which will allow individuals to donate money to support the Lets Can Hunger Challenge cause. As students walk by our booth, they will witness a prominent sign which highlights the severe issues of hunger and poverty. If any individuals have loose change upon stepping out the line after getting food, they may donate the funds into our donation box.
