WARHAMMER 40,000 MAIN RULE BOOK QUESTIONS

TheMovementPhase Wheneveramodelmoves,inanyphaseofthegame, movementdistanceismeasuredwithastraightthree dimensionallinebetweenthebasesstartingand endingpositions. ATankisallowedtomovethroughnonvehicleenemy modelsnotlockedinclosecombatwhenitturnson thespottoaimaspartofaTankShock.Units movedthroughinthiswaycountasbeingTank Shockedandmodelsinthepathofthepivotmay makeDeathorGloryattacks(providedtheunitpasses itsMoraletest). TheShootingPhase ModelsthatTurboboostintheShootingphasecan moveanynumberofinches(uptothemaximumfor theirunittype)inanycombinationofdirections, potentiallyendingthephaseintheexactsame position. Whenaunitmakesashootingattack,solongasa modelinthetargetunitwaswithinrangeandLoSof atleastonefiringmodelwhenToHitrollsweremade, thenthattargetmodelmayhavewoundsallocatedto itandberemovedasacasualty.

WhenmultipleunitsareeligibletofireOverwatchata chargingunit,thefiringplayerresolvestheOverwatch fromoneofhisunits(ofhischoice)beforedeciding whetherhewouldliketofireOverwatchwithanother eligibleunit.Thiscontinuesuntilalleligibleunitshave eitherfiredortheplayerchoosestomakenofurther Overwatchattacksagainstthechargingunit. Unitsareconsideredtobelockedinclosecombatas soonasanyenemymodelmovesintobasetobase contactwiththem.Thispreventstheunitfromfiring Overwatchagainstotherunitschargingthemlaterin thesamephase. UnitsmaychoosenottomakeaConsolidationmove afterwinninganassault.Iftheychoosenotto,all modelsintheunitareleftintheirexactpositions. IfaunitchoosestomakeaConsolidationmove,then allmodelsintheunitmustendthismovement1 awayfromallenemymodels,includinganyenemy vehiclestheymayhavejustattackedinclosecombat. WhilemakingPileInmoves,ifbothplayersmovesin aparticularInitiativestepareinsufficienttobringany combatantsbacktogether,butPileInmovesin subsequentInitiativestepsthatturnwouldbe sufficienttodoso,theassaultcontinuesnormally.

Ex1:Aunitof10GreyHunterswith8Boltguns and2MeltagunsfiresataunitofChaosSpace Marines.TheSpaceWolvesplayerchoosesto resolvetheBoltgunwoundsfirst.Afterarmor savesaremadefortheBoltgunwounds,the closestCSMisbeyondthe12rangeofeither Meltagunner.ThisCSMmodelmaystillhavethe Meltagunwoundsallocatedtoitandberemoved asacasualtyifanyoneoftheBoltgunwielding GreyHuntershadrangeandLoStoitwhenToHit rollsweremade. Notethatunsavedwoundsfromanattackthatdoes notrequireLoS(e.g.Barrageweapons,TauSmart MissileSystems)canbeallocatedtotargetmodels thatarecompletelyoutofthefiringunitsLoS. Whenaunitmakesashootingattack,anyvehicle modelsthatarecompletelyoutofthefiringunitsLoS cannotbeaffectedbythatshootingattack(unlessthe attackdoesnotrequireLoS,ofcourse). Unlessexplicitlystatedotherwise,rulesthatallowa

Characters PrecisionShot/Strikewoundsarealwaysseparated intoadifferentgroup(orgroups)withintheWound PoolfromanynonPrecisionShot/Strikewounds. IndependentCharactersmayjoinasinglemodelunit solongasthatunithadtheoptionofhavingmultiple modelsinitsarmylistentry(e.g.anIndependent CharactermayjoinanXV104Riptideevenifthe Riptidedidnotpurchaseanydronesandbeganthe gameasasinglemodelunit). Psykers/PsychicPowers IftheTerrifypsychicpowercausesaunitlockedin closecombattofallback,theyleavecombatand makeanormalfallbackmove.Iftheyweretheonly unitlockedincombatwiththeenemy,theenemy maynotmakeaSweepingAdvanceorConsolidate andremainsexactlywheretheyare. ZoomingFlyersdonotsuffertheStrength1hitwith theHaywirespecialrulewhentargetedbythe ObjurationMechanicumpsychicpower.Theother effectsofthepowerapplynormally. Apsykerthatiseitherfallingbackatthestartofits turnorunabletomoveinitsmovementphase (becauseitislockedincombatorhasgonetoground, forexample)maynotusetheGateofInfinityPsychic powerthatturn(boththeversionofthepowerinthe mainrulebookandintheSpaceMarinecodex). UniversalSpecialRules ModelsmakingaHit&Runmovethatencounteran obstacletheyarenotallowedtomovethroughor over(suchasImpassableTerrainortheedgeofthe board,forexample)immediatelyendtheirmove. AnIndependentCharacterthathastheInfiltrate specialrulecanjoinaunitthatdoesnothave Infiltrateduringdeploymentallowingthemallto infiltratetogether. Amodelthatfiresduringanopponentsturnusing theInterceptorspecialrule: o Musthavelineofsighttoitstargetevenifthe weaponbeingfireddoesnotnormallyrequire LoS. o Alwayscountsasstationaryforthisfiring. o MaystillfireOverwatchifassaultedinthesame playerturn,evenwiththesameweaponusedto intercept. AunitcanperformaVectorStrikeinthesameturn thatitleavesCombatAirspace. IfamodelhastheSmashspecialruleandusesaclose combatweaponthathasanAP3orhigher,these attacksarestillresolvedatAP2.

Unlessspecifiedotherwise,attacksthatcauseInstant Deathonatowoundrollof6stillneedtobeableto woundthetargetmodelforInstantDeathtobe inflicted(e.g.aS4attackcannothurtaT8modeleven iftheattackcausesInstantDeathona6). IfaunitrollsaMisplacedresultontheDeepStrike MishapTable,theenemyplayermustplacetheunitin alegalspotwheretheywouldnotmishapasecond time.Ifnosuchpositionexists,theunitisplacedinto OngoingReserves. WhenaunitwiththeBrotherhoodof Psykers/Sorcerersspecialrulecastsapsychicpower, rangeandLoSaredeterminedfromanysinglemodel withthisruleintheunit,selectedbythecasting player.Notethatifsuchaunitcastsapsychic shootingattack,onlytheselectedmodelcountsas makingtheattack(meaningothermodelsintheunit canstillfireaweaponoftheirown,shouldtheyhave one). Coversavesmaynotbetakenagainstglancingand penetratinghitsthathavetheIgnoresCoverspecial rule. AnOrdnanceweaponwiththeTankHunterspecial rulemustrerollbotharmorpenetrationdiceornone atall. FlyersandFlyingMonstrousCreatures Unlessspecifiedotherwise,anyattacksorspecial abilitiesthatcancausedamage(i.e.hits,wounds and/orvehicledamage)withoutrollingtohit(e.g.an OrkWeirdboy'sZzappsychicpowerandNjalsLordof Tempestsspecialrules)havenoeffectonZooming FlyersandSwoopingFlyingMonstrousCreatures.This istrueeveniftheattackingunithastheSkyfirespecial rule.NotethatImotekhsLordoftheStormabilityis anexplicitexceptiontothisrule. Foreaseoftournamentplay,atthisevent,allvehicle weaponsareassumedtobeabletoswivelvertically 180degreesontheirmount,insteadofthenormal45 degrees. BlastWeapons Vehicleshitbyablastweapon,butcompletelyoutof LineofSightofthefiringunit,areaffectednormally bytheblast.

TemplateWeapons ModelscompletelyoutofLoSofthefiringunitcanbe hitbyatemplateweaponandaddwoundstothe woundpoolfortheshootingattack.However,unless thetemplateweapondoesnotrequireLoS,models completelyofoutLoSofthefiringunitcannothave unsavedwoundsallocatedtothem,andsocannotbe removedascasualties.Similarly,atemplatecannot affectvehiclesthatarecompletelyoutofthefiring unitsLoSeither(unlesstheweapondoesnotrequire LoS,ofcourse). TemplateweaponswiththeTorrentspecialrule, besidesnothavingtobeplacedtouchingthefiring modelsbase,muststillabidebyallothertargeting restrictionsforTemplateweapons. Allies AunitwithanalliedIndependentCharacterattached cannotembark,norbeginthegameembarked,upon atransportvehicle. ModifiersthataffectReserveRollsapplytounitsfrom thesamedetachmentwithalliedIndependent Charactersattached.Theydonotapplyto IndependentCharactersfromthedetachment attachedtoalliedunits. Fortifications Aclaimedfortificationisconsideredtobeaunitinthe controllingplayersarmy.Thereforespecialrulesand abilitiesthatapplytofriendlyunits/modelsgenerally applytoaclaimedfortification.Notehowever, rules/abilitiesthatapplyonlytounits/modelsfroma particularcodexwillnotapplytoafortificationwhich isnotfromacodex. o Ex1:Aclaimedfortificationwithin6ofanOrk KustomForceFieldwouldgaina5+coversave (provideditwasclaimedbytheOrkplayer). o Ex2:Aclaimedfortificationwithin3ofaDark AngelsPowerFieldGeneratorwouldgaina4+ invulnerablesave. asitsfacingifnoneisapparent.Gunemplacements maytakecoversavesgrantedbyterrainor interveningunitsjustlikeanInfantrymodeldoes. Unitscannotdeclareachargeagainstagun emplacement.However,ifwhilecharginganother unitagunemplacementisengagedinclosecombat, thenattacksmaybedirectedatthegunemplacement asthoughitwereaseparateunit. Bothplayersmayhaveamodelinbasecontactwith thesamegunemplacement(providedtheyare1 apart)andbothmodelsmayfireitinconsecutive Shootingphases. OnlymodelsphysicallyontopofashieldedSkyshield LandingPadgainthe4+invulnerablesave. TheshieldingwallsofaSkyshieldLandingPadare battlementsandprovidea4+coversavetomodels obscuredbythem. Modelsobscuredbytheleg/pillarportionofa SkyshieldLandingPadreceivea3+coversave. TheAutomatedFirerulecausesemplacedweaponsto fireatthenearestlegalenemyunitwithinrange andlineofsight.Aunitisstillalegaltargetevenifthe shootingattackisnotstrongenoughtohurtit.Aunit isnotalegaltargetifitwouldrequirebreakingoneof thetargetingrestrictionsoftheweapontype(e.g. placingablastmarkeroverafriendlymodel).

Terrain The4+coversaveforruinsappliesonlytomodels obscuredfromtheattackbythewallsoftheruin.The flooranditsbase(ifithasone)arejusttreatedas normalareaterrain.Rulesthatspecificallymodifythe coversaveofruinsapplyonlytothecoversave providedbytheruinwalls. Unlikeothertypesofareaterrain,forestsgranta coversaveifafiringmodeltracesitslineofsightover anyportionoftheforestsbase,regardlessofwhether thetarget(evenifitisavehicle)isphysicallyobscured bythetreesatall.Thisevenappliestoafiringmodel evenafractionofaninchfullyinsideofaforestthatis firingattargetsoutside.

Missions Foreaseoftournamentplay,atthisevent,ascoring unitisalwaysconsideredtobeadenialunitaswell. AFastAttack/HeavySupportunitwiththeSwarms specialrule(oranyotherspecialrulethatspecifies theunitnevercountsasbeingscoring)doesnotcount asbeingascoringunit,evenwhenplayingthe ScouringorBigGunsNeverTiremissions. InTheRelicmission,iftherelicisdroppedbecauseit movesmorethan6inasinglephasethenitis droppedfromthepositionwherethecarryingmodel beganthatphase. Unitsembarkedonatransportcannotachievethe LinebreakerSecondaryObjectiveforbeinginthe enemysdeploymentzone. Foreaseoftournamentplay,atthisevent,Flyersmay neverscoreorcontestanobjectivemarker.Notethat aFlyermadeintoascoringunitmaystillachievethe Linebreakermissionobjective.

DropPods Modelsdisembarkingfromadroppodcanmakea normalmoveendingwhollywithin6ofthepod. WhenaDropPoddeploys,itdoesnotautomatically loseaHullPointeventhoughitistreatedassuffering animmobilizeddamageresult.However,ifitlandsin Difficult/DangerousTerrainandfailsitsDifficult Terraintest,thenitlosesatotalof2HullPoints. Thedoorsofadroppodmodelareignoredforall gamepurposes(e.g.theyneverblockLoS,theymay notbedisembarkedfrom,andenemymodelsdonot needtoremain1awayfromthem). Unitsembarkeduponadroppodtransport,and IndependentCharactersattachedtothoseunits,are ignoredforthepurposesofcalculatingthenumberof unitsthatmaybeheldinReserves.Thismeansthata droppodthemedarmycouldpotentiallybeginthe gamewitheveryunitinReserves.

CODEX-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

AdeptaSororitas AnAdeptaSororitasarmyusestheSistersofBattle allymatrixentryinthemainrulebook. BloodAngels AFuriosoLibrariancountsasbeingaBloodAngels Librarianforthepurposesofgeneratingpsychic powersfromtherulebook(pertheBloodAngels FAQ).NotethateventhoughaFuriosoLibrarianhas twopsychicpowers,itisstillPsychicMasteryLevel1. TheBloodLancepsychicpowerhasnoeffectagainst ZoomingFlyersandSwoopingFlyingMonstrous Creatures. WhentheMasqueofSlaaneshtargetsaunitwiththe DanceofCaging,rollaseparateD3eachtimethe targetunitisgoingtomoveforanyreason.TheDance ofCagingaffectsalltypesofmovement,including, TurboboostingandThrustmovement.Flying MonstrousCreaturesthatareaffectedbythisability ontheirturnmaynotchoosetoSwoop. AFiendofSlaaneshsDisruptiveSongspecialrule appliesa1LdmodifierforeachFiendmodelthatis within12ofanenemypsyker.Thesemodifiersare cumulativewithotherinstancesofDisruptiveSong fromdifferentunits.NotethataLeadershipTestis notthesameasaCharacteristicTest,andthereforea rollofdouble1alwayspassesevenagainstaLdof0. APortaglyphhasnospecifiedheight,andmayliterally berepresentedbyasmallblasttemplate. WhenNecronMindshackleScarabsarecontrollinga daemonmodelwithaMutatingWarpblade,andthat modelslaysacharacterormonstrouscreaturefrom theirownarmy,theWarpMutationspecialruledoes nottakeeffect. WhenMindshackleScarabsforceamodeltoattack anothermodelfromitsownarmy(includingitself), andthetargetmodelhastheBurningBloodDaemonic Gift,D3woundsarenotgeneratedforeachunsaved woundsuffered. The+1toFeelNoPainrollsfromtheWarpflame DaemonicGiftstackswithotherinstancesof Warpflame.NotethatamodelsFeelNoPainrollcan neverbeimprovedbeyond2+.
