instruments:

Design
The instruments are accommodated in a splash-proof, shock and scratch-resistant, molded plastic case (Fig.1). A knife-edge pointer and mirror scale ensures parallaxfree reading. All ranges are selected by means of only a rotary switch (range selector). It must be noted that, for instrument V, the current mode is selected by a slide switch which permits polarity change for d.c. measurements. For the rms V instrument, mode and polarity of the variable are displayed by an indicator. In contrast to other instruments, the rms MULTIZET hag three terminals. The centre terminal is used exclusively for the 30-A range and must be connected according to the circuit diagram on the scale. The mechanical zero adjusting right of the range selector. screw is located to the

M05955-A1 Operation
General Recommendations Hold instrument steady and approximately horizontal, also when measuring in ever-ready carrying case. Check mechanical pointer zero before commencing with measurement. Correct, if necessary, by means of zero screw on front. 00 not clean scale grass during measurement (static charge). ElirTiinate charge by breathing onto instrument face. If an external magnetic fjeld is expected, the measurement must be repeated in various positions and the average value taken. To prevent static charging in very dry air when measuring d.c. voltages in excess of 800 V, the minus terminal should be earthed (not for rms).

Measurements

Always set the range selector to such a high range that the mechanism will definitely not be overloaded, before connecting the test leads. If the pointer deflection is less than the full-scale deflection of the next smaller range, this range may be selected on-line. For V a n d r m s V instruments, a battery check must be carried out in all cases before selecting a range: Set range selector to ~~ or11-. If the pointer does not deflect into the green range the battery must be replaced (refer to paragraph "Maintenance"). Set range selector to 0 after every measurement. Note: Disconnect voltage to be measured before checking the battery. For r m s : Connect tor direct measurement according to circuit diagram on scale. For S, T a n d r m s : Before measurements on current transformers: Check instrument tor reading, e.g. by current, voltage or resistance measurement. Reason: In the case of an open circuit (blown fuse) excessively high voltages may occur at the terminals when measuring on current transformer secondaries. For S: For voltage measurements above 1000 V: Range selector to 1000 V d.c. or a.c. Connect series resistor to instrument and the minus terminal of the series resistor to the earthed pole of the equipment on which the measurement is carried out or to the pole of lower potential to earth. Important: with this measurement, the instrument may be at a high potential. If the positive terminal or if no terminal is earthed, the instrument may not be touched wh~n the vortage is switched on. Place the instrument on an insulating base tor such a measurement. For r m s: For current measurements above 30 A, the current transformer secondary is connected to the two outside terminals. If the pointer deflection is less than the full8

scale value of the next smaller range, this range can be selected under load (the current transformer secondary circuit is not opened during switching). A 2 : 1 primary ratio change is possible at a ring-type transformer, by passing the primary current twice through the current transformer opening. For voltage measurements above 600 V: Turn range selector to 600 V. Connect series resistor to the two outer terminals and left terminal of series resistor to earthed pole of the equipment on which the measurement is carried out or to the pole of lower potential to earth. Important: with this measurement the instrument may be at a high potential. If no terminal is earthed, the instrument may not be touched when the voltage is switched on. Place the instrument on an insulating base for such a measurement. For S, T, ftA, mV, rms, V and rms V: for measurements with range extension accessories, the range selector must be set to the required range (details on bottom piste of instrument) before connecting the instrument in the circuit. Connect range extension device and only then switch on

circuit.

Resistance

Measurements

..

For S, T, f! A a n d mV: Short-circuit terminals before a resistance measurement and adjust electrical zero by means of knurled screw at right side of instrument. If this is not possible, replace the battery (refer to paragraph "Maintenance"). For V an d r m s V.: Check battery before measurement: Range selector to;~ or -jf-; if pointer does not deflect into green range, replace batteries (refer to paragraph "Maintenance"). Reset range selector to 0 after every measure-

ment.

Overload Protection
The instruments are fitted with fuse overload protection. S, T, ftA and mV can be fitted with an overload protection relay. The relay protects the instrument within certain limits against operating errors. Its contacts are in the leads to the test circuit. In the triggered state (red reset button between terminals protrudes by approx. 15 mm), the circuit is open (no reading). When resetting the relay while under overload, it is again triggered after a few milliseconds. Remove overload and reset the relay by actuating the reset button. Do not actuate the reset button during a measurement. If it is depressed further, when in the latched position, the relay contacts are also opened. Do not cover the reset button when connecting terminals. At San d T with connection to current transformers, it must be noted that the secondary circuit is open when the protecting relay is triggered. The voltage across the terminals may then amount to some kV.

Ever-ready Carrying

Ca se

Converting from transport position to operating position Remove lid, rotate instrument with case through 1800 and attach lid to case by means of snap-button. Connect shoulder strap to both sides of the lid by means of the snap-buttons. A projection at the back of the casing and a securing strap with snap-button stop the instrument from falling out.

The V a nd r m s V instruments are provided with an electronic overload protection; the S, T a n d fA, A instruments can be equipped with this protection. The electronic overload protection consists of an electromechanical relay energized oy a transistor switching amplifier. This permits a switching time of 5 msec to be attained at 2.5 times overload (V, rmsV) or 5 times overload (S, T, fA,A).The breaking capacity furthermore amounts to 12 kVA on a.c. and 2 kW on d.c. Without battery, a stilllarger overload protection is possible, disconnecting at 50 to 100 times overload. (Exceptions: V and rms V, which cannot be operated without batteries).

Converting from operating position to transport position loosen snap-buttons on lid. Rotate case with instrument through 180. Place lid over casing and shut by means of snap-button.

Replacing

the

fuses

The rms instrument has two fuses, all others only one (refer to Technical Data). Open fuse chamber cover at bottom of instrument and replace fuse(s), observing correct fuse rating.

Maintenance
00 not open the instrument case with a test voltage con-

nected.
Replacing the (Refer to Fig. 2) batteries

Open battery compartment cover in direction of arrows, after pressing down latch, (Fig.4) (e.g. by means of a pin or pencil point). Remove old batteries. Clean instrument contacts (if necessary) and straighten. Insert new batteries, observing correct polarity and close battery compartment cover.

Repair

instructions

Ordering

Data Ord. No.

Should any repairs become necessary, do not return the instrument to the factory, but contact the responsible Siemens representative, who will provide competent and efficient service. Should a relay fault occur on the instruments with protecting relay (possible for S, T, I-tA and mV) and the instrument be required for important measurements, the relay contacts may be bridged. Loosen the four hex screws and remove the bottom plate. Unsolder gray wire (2 in Fig. 6) from protecting relay and connect to terminal (1 in Fig. 6). Place bottom plate back in position.
