Lesson Plan

Descriptive title for Lesson: Making a local Christmas drink, sorrel. Subject: Cookery Level: 4 years

Instructional Goal: To make the children aware of a famous local Christmas drink, sorrel and how to make it. Age Range: 4 year olds Previous Knowledge: Children should have an idea of some of the various local Christmas cuisines and dishes and they should know what sorrel is. Lesson Pre-Assessment: Have the children identify the sorrel fruit amongst other red fruits. Rationale for Teaching Strategies Selected: Active Learning: Children learn best by doing. Therefore, children are able to engage in a cookery activity to enhance their learning. This strategy would actively engage children in the learning process so they gain a better and thorough understanding of the steps involved in making a Christmas sorrel drink. Role- playing strategy was employed to enhance the childrens learning experience as they were able to pretend to be chefs as the engage in the activity. It makes the activity fun as children are able to wear aprons and chef hats in a kitchen setting. Computer-based instruction: A prezi was used to educate the children about various local Christmas cuisines as pictures are displayed so children have a visual idea of what is being taught. Scavenger Hunt: This is employed as the summative assessment where children would be assessed in a fun and exciting way. They are able to work together and move about as they search for the items.

Objectives Organized by domain: Cognitive: 90% of the 4 year-old children will be able to identify various local Christmas cuisines by making the drink sorrel. Affective: 90% of the four year-old children will display enjoyment as they participate in the cookery activity and will feel a sense of pride after working together to make the sorrel drink for themselves. Psychomotor: 90% of the four year-old children will develop their fine motor skills by peeling the sorrel strips for boiling.

Summative Assessment: Children will engage in a treasure hunt to find pictures with the various local Christmas cuisines and other non-Christmas cuisines. These activities will assess whether the children are able to identify and name local Christmas cuisines as well as relate the process of making sorrel. Contingency Plan: Printed pictures of the local Christmas cuisines and a book or magazine with them in the event that the computer or projector (for the prezi), fails to work.
