Fundamental of Geographic Information System (EHR001) Team Teaching : 1. Eko Haryanto 2.

LAPAN/BPPT Schedule : 2 hours course per-week 3 hours practical per-week

Objectives Upon completion of this course participants should be able to: 1. Explain the purposes of GIS 2. Explain the types of spatial data and make choises with respect to GIS application fields 3. Apply basic GIS operations, including data extraction, data analysis and visualization operation and position their use in specific applications 4. Expalin data quality issues in GIS Course Description This course will lay the foundation for subsequent CSiMA Program in the context of Geographic Information Systems. Course Contents An introduction to Geographic Information System (GIS) theory and practice. Basic concepts and issues in GIS are presented in both a formal and a practical setting. The course provides a general exposure to GIS, its applications, algorithms and general methodology. The major components of a GIS, the functionality of these components, and the interrelationship between GIS and other sciences and technologies are also discussed. A state of the art of GIS will be used to carry out practical assignments concerned with basic data entry and database building, data analysis and modelling, cartographic production and data transfer. 1. Introduction to Geographic Analysis and GIS 2. Geographic data, map, & map concepts 3. Computer cartography & spatial database management system 4. Spatial data structure 5. Data acquisition, preparation & input to GIS 6. Data pre-processing, georeferencing, coordinate transformation, projection,

conversion, attribute classification Data query and spatial analysis Information visualization and output Data quality and metadata GIS user interface and system integration 11. GIS application development 12. GIS project management 7. 8. 9. 10.
