LASSWADE

Athletics Club
This newsletter is my first as the new Club Development Officer. Can I take this opportunity to thank everyone I have had the chance to meet so far for making me feel more than welcome and the chance to get involved in this great Athletics Club. My intention is to keep everyone connected to the club involved and up to date with what has been going on and what is happening in the future. If anyone has anything they would like me to put on the next newsletter then please do not hesitate to get in touch. Whether its achievements, ideas or just want to share a story then please get in touch.

Giant Heptathlon
Giant Heptathlon took place in February at the new Lasswade Centre where S1 and S2 pupils from the 6 secondary schools in Midlothian took part. The event also seen former Lasswade AC member Freya Murray Ross deliver a presentation to the pupils prior to the event starting.

Sportshall Athletics
This year the club got involved in partnership with Active Schools where all 30 Primary Schools in Midlothian were invited to attend the event. Sportshall Athletics gives P7 pupils the chance to try out athletics and have fun by competing against other schools.

Once again there was a presence from the club to assist on the day with Linden helping out once again and I was there to quickly speak to everyone involved and promote the club.

Road Race
Our annual 10 mile road race took place on the 2nd March this year. A huge effort by everyone leading up to the event and on the day of the event. Feedback received was good and without the help of all the volunteers it would never of been such a success. A big mention must also go to Ruth Szymanski for her organizational skills and ensuring all the runners and helpers were fed and watered. Feedback again was excellent with regards to the spread Ruth and her helpers put on for everyone. This year numbers were down to previous years due to another event being on the same day. The club still managed to attract over 300 runners on the day. This year there was a minor de-tour compared to previous years due to building developments within the grounds of Whitehill House. This years race was won by Brian Riddle of Corstorphine Running Club with a time of 55 minutes and 48 seconds. The fast female on the day was Nicola Duncan from Portobello Running Club with a time of 56 minutes and 58 seconds and with an impressive fourth finish overall.

This year a total of 26 schools took part and the event was a huge success. Dave McConnell and Linden Nicholson were on hand to assist and help with the events that ran for approximately 4 weeks. The winner of the event got to go on and represent Midlothian at the Schools Sportshall Athletics at Meadowbank in February.

More people can keep up to date with the club and see what is going on over and above the clubs website now. The aim behind this is to increase exposure for the club and try and engage with our younger athletes but also the chance for parents to see what the club is doing. Annual General Meeting

This year the clubs AGM was held at the new Lasswade Centre. The AGM allowed Brian Wilson, Club Chairman to inform those in attendance of what was achieved within the last year and what the aim is for the year ahead. Other committee members also informed the group of results from various different aspects of the club. Minutes will be available for the meeting upon request. The AGM also gave the committee the chance to acknowledge the achievements of many athletes connected to the club in the past year with awards handed out at the end of the meeting. Also thanks to Lewis Donaldson for being our photographer on the night. Well done to those athletes who have enjoyed a successful year in 2013 and managed to collect an award at the AGM and to all those other athletes involved in the club.

Induction Group
The club is taking names for the next group of new athletes for our induction groups. Anyone interested in getting involved in athletics then please get in touch. Contact details are on the page of this page. We are looking for junior athletes from 8 years +. Please note junior athletes can only compete from 9 years plus but if you know anyone that would like to try athletics then the club would like to hear from you.

Coaches Corner
This is the opportunity where everyone can get to know the clubs coaches better. Todays coach is: LINDA SMITH

Coach?: Endurance Why athletics and how did you get involved in the Club?: I was an athlete and competed myself. My daughter Amy wanted to try athletics when she was 9 years old. I took her down to the club and she joined the endurance group and eventually Davie Hand used his persuasive ways and I was soon helping out at the club. Goals / Aims?: To continue to guide the young athletes in the endurance group to get the best out of themselves and take them on to bigger and better things. To continue to learn from other coaches / education and take coaching to the next level. As team manager of various leagues the aim is always to get the best and strongest teams out and compete with the best of them. Favourite Athlete?: When I ran - Liz McColgan for her single mindedness and determination Currently - Blanca Vlasic - for her grace and making high jump look so effortless Proudest Achievement?: Finally winning Euro Junior Scottish 800M in 1985 If you could be anyone for a day, who and why?: A surgeonthe human body fascinate me. Is a jaffa cake a biscuit or a cake and why?: Biscuit - Dont be fooled by the name, its always found in the biscuit isle!

Volunteers Recruitment
Lasswade Athletics Club is always on the look out for volunteers. If you are willing to give up some of your spare time to help with the club then we would like to hear from you. If you have some athletics experience then fantastic, if you dont then it makes no difference to the club. All we need is volunteers willing to give up some spare time to assist the group of volunteers we already have. Some advantages of getting involved in the club are: The chance to gain new qualifications The opportunity to learn and develop new skills Meet new people A chance to use your own skills and knowledge Give something back to the community

Commonwealth Games
Lasswade Athletics Club over the last 30 years has worked with some great athletes who have went on to perform at international level. Freya Murray Ross for example went on to run for Team GB at the London Olympics in 2012.

This year is no different. The club will hopefully have 3 members of the club competing in Glasgow this summer at the Commonwealth Games. One confirmed so far is Guy Learmonth (pictured below)

Pictured below are some of Lasswade Athletic Club volunteers with Freya Murray Ross picking up a Podium award for recognition of continual growth and development. The award recognises recruiting new volunteers and athletes in large numbers whilst supporting those already involved.

Another one of our athletes that we hope can join Guy is Ross Matheson (pictured below). Ross has also kindly agreed to keep a blog which can be viewed on the club website with regards to his training in New Mexico, USA.

And finally, we hope that Greg Louden (pictured below) can also make the Commonwealth Games.

Impact Club of the Year 2013

In October 2013, Lasswade Athletics Club were voted scottishathletics Impact Club of the Year. The title was recognition to all the volunteers involved at Lasswade for the development on and off the track with huge strides made in participation, development and dedication throughout the year. A huge well done to everyone involved in the club.

Best of luck guys from everyone at Lasswade Athletics Club.
