PARTICIPATING COMPANIES

With the Resume

Building and the Networking Trends of Tomorrow workshop under the students belts, the SHRMies were ready for one of the chapters signature event: SHRM Mock Interview! From March 15-18, the SHRM Aloha Chapters Mock Interview event differentiates itself from other clubs by pairing our members up with well-versed, established professionals working in the HR field in a specialized 30-minutes block. In the first half of each block, the members are given the chance to brandish their ! .!

interviewing skills. In the second half, the professionals critiqued members on all aspects: from any bad, nervous habits; to their resume; and even to the way they dressed. Additionally, most of our professionals had enough time to engage the members in small talk, allowing the SHRMies to flourish their newly acquired networking skills!

In this event, members were able to practice everything they have learned up until then, allowing them to learn from their mistakes in preparation for the Aloha Chapters keystone event: Professional Interaction Night A huge mahalo to the professionals who took the time out of their day to help prepare the SHRM members for the professional world!

BEACH
Finishing off the
week was a biannual SHRM Saturday morning Beach Day! This semester, the picnic was held over at Kailua Beach Park. With the sandwich station quickly set up, the SHRMies were given the creative luxury to make lunch whenever they wanted, and in whatever way they wanted! For example, following in the footsteps of one of our veteran members, Michael stuffed his sandwich with a whole bag of chips (before finishing it off with mustard and mayonnaise). As disgusting as that sounds, it actually was not bad! Halfway through the day as we were reaching a lull, Kainoa Fong, Director of Student Affairs, organized a quick football game that

SATURDAY MORNING

involved both athletic and unathletic alike. Kainoa led his band of ragtag kids against our SHRM Football Stars Jared Kushi and Scott Nguyen, but unfortunately, not even his leadership was enough to conquer these two juggernauts of the gridiron. We rounded out the day by relaxing and watching some of our bolder members swim out to a nearby island before calling it a day!

Overall, the SHRM members really enjoyed the day with relaxation and beach activities. Most important, bonds were formed between the different individuals who share even just a speck of common interest.

After an eventful month of mock interviews and midterms, the SHRMies were pretty beat! Thank goodness for Spring Break! While many of us went back home to be with family and friends, the SHRMies kicked off the vacation by going to Ice Palace! But thats not all, they ramped it up to the next level by inviting our friends at AMA, the American Marketing Association, to join us! Theres little in the world that can beat an afternoon of ice-skating with the SHRMies, but theres virtually nothing that can top a day of gliding through Oahus frozen wonderland with our SHRMAMAs! Also, as a special treat for both old and new members alike, we were graced with the presences of !

Princess Karen Galano and Adrienne Huang, both of whom were Directors of Corporate Relations during their tenure in the SHRM Aloha Chapter; and Landon Wong, the previous Director of Fundraising. With the hot sun beating down, the SHRMies were more than eager to jump out onto the ice. They got in, found their seats, plopped on the skates, and jumped in onto the ice! More veteran skaters leapt onto the ice like beautiful swans dancing through meadows of frozen crystals while our rookies struggled just to maintain their balance. With the SHRM legends, our president and Sheina Baybayan, the IBC Senator, took to the rink! Following ".!

close behind were Angel and Michael Hoe, our Director of Corporate Relation and IT Officer, who led the SHRMies onto the ice! However, within the first 5 seconds, Michael fell and took out an AMA member with him. Luckily it didnt cause a war! Meanwhile, the Director of Fundraising, Isaac Lui, headed over to the tutorial area to challenge our members to a race. With the exception of a couple instances of horrible chafing, fun times were had all around! It was definitely a day to remember!

MEET OUR SHRMIES uring

!
JESSICA HIGASHI
In recognition for her hard work and dedication, especially while maintaining her cheerful smile, Jessica Higashi is our returning SHRMie of March! Jessica has been in SHRM since her first semester, and has proven to be a very dedicated member who loves SHRM! In the Fall 2013 semester, she displayed incredible dedication as she joined our winning cheer team for Super Clubs Day, and earned herself the Diamond Sales Award, an award we hand out to the member who fundraised the most! Jessica first joined SHRM because of the persuasiveness of Adrian Catalan, the Hero and former President of SHRM, and her mentor-mentee relationship to the current SHRM president, Ha Vong. When asked about what she has gained through her short career in SHRM, Jessica cheerfully said, I have learned SO MUCH. I have definitely gained many skills I would not have acquired anywhere else. From what to include on a resume to how to network and talk to professionals, to how to dress for a professional event, SHRM will teach you everything you need to know. With her refreshing peppiness, Jessica has the ability to turn any event into a lifelong memory. Whether it is a car wash or doing miscellaneous work for community service, she displays the SHRM Spirit wherever she goes! When asked about what she likes most about the club, she said, My favorite part is definitely the people. In SHRM, you will meet the greatest, friendliest people you will ever meet and form lifelong friendships. She is truly an embodiment of SHRM and what it stands for! Jessica is a freshman currently majoring in general business, but she hopes to graduate with a double major in HR and Finance while taking a minor in Directing. It looks like the acting bug upgraded to the directing bug! Her favorite food is pho, and if she had a time machine, she would like to go to Woodstock to see how crazy it was, and to attend a Bob Marley concert to feel the love. She also recently adopted an adorable puppy from the Humane Society that is the size of a cat, the looks of a German Shepherd, and the face of a fox! In the future, Jessica would like to travel throughout the world with her puppy, and her first stop would be Scotland where she visited last summer to participate in the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival! When questioned why she would like to go back there, she said, Its so beautiful and old-fashioned there, and the people are ridiculously friendly. Not to mention their accents are adorable! Thank you for everything you have done for us, Jessica! We wish you luck on your future travels, and hopefully we will get to see your name at the end of the credits in movies or on a Broadway bill!

Fe a t

Acquire SHRMs Knowledge Q3: If you had a time machine,

where would you go and what would you do?
I would go back to the day Facebook became publicly traded, and invest all my money to its stocks. Andrew Chen

ASK

Travel back in time to the 80s to go to Queen concert because theyre one of my favorite bands. Perlina Cheng I guess I would have to say I would want to jump about 10 years into the future, and the first thing I would do is see the person I have become because I am really curious to see if I have been making the right decisions, If I am married, If I have children, and where I have traveled to. Dayle Akamine I go back to 2004, become an actress, audition for The Notebook, and take Rachel McAdams role, fall in love with Ryan Gosling while making the movie, and live happily every after. Megan Williams I guess I would go back to the Renaissance, and the first thing I would do would probably be to go to a ball because of all the colors and lovely music! It just sounds like a good time. Jennifer Sakumoto I would want to see dinosaurs, mainly a T-Rex, and the first thing I would do is try to pet it while attempting to ride it. Trisha Toguchi I would go back in time, party with Jesus, and become his 13th apostle. Every Filipino household has a framed picture of the Last Supper, and Id be on it. Jon Rivera

JACQUELINE ORNELLAS
Thanks to her dedication and support, we would like to honor Jacqueline Ornellas as Marchs Rising Star! Jacqueline, known as Jackie by her friends, is currently a junior majoring in Human Resource Management at the Shidler College of Business. Gliding through the rink at Ice Palace, Jacqueline helped some of our rookie skaters get on the ice to make sure we all had a fulfilling experience! Fun fact: if she had a time machine, she would go to New Orleans during the Roaring Twenties! Whether it is asking questions at a workshop or dazzling the professionals at mock interviews, Jacqueline has become one of the regular faces at any of our SHRM events with her friendly aura! You can really see the synergy between her and one of the SHRM Aloha Chapters missions, which is to promote and educate students from all walks of life about HR, when you find out that her immediate goals of college are to develop skills to apply the theories of HR in practical work situations. And if that was not enough to convince you, her long-term goals are to achieve a successful and stable HR position! We know you can do it Jacqueline, you have the drive and the passion to make it happen!

With this being her first semester in SHRM, we wanted to hear what her thoughts were, so we asked, Why did you join SHRM? Without missing a beat, she spat out a very executive answer and said, To make personal and professional relationships with fellow club members and professionals in the industry. Following up, she was asked what she liked about SHRM and what she gained from us, and she responded with her professional demeanor, I gained more confidence to interact with professionals, and I really like the opportunities to meet new people with similar interests that which SHRM has provided. Jacquelines responses are a very refreshing reminder that we are doing things right by furthering our members professional development, and we thank her for such amazing insights from a new members perspective! With her passion and work ethic, she is going to make a name for herself in the blink of an eye if you look away! Thank you for your hard work and dedication thus far, Jacqueline! We are looking forward to seeing more of your work in the future!

PROFESSIONAL INTERACTION NIGHT

The Professional Interaction Night (PIN) is the biggest professional event hosted by the SHRM Aloha Chapter. This event will serve as the capstone event of the semester and is the culmination of all the professional training and exposure the members have experienced. It is filled with opportunity for members to meet, interact and have dinner conversations with professionals in the Hawaiis business community. The event will start off with a casual mixer, then transition to dinner, where members will sit next to their first professional pairing. After dinner the members will move to their second professional pairing. This event allows members to network and ask questions and for the professionals to meet new and incoming talent which may lead to internships and full-time hires.

5 Ways To Build Relationships With Colleagues

Because everyone has their role to play in a company, it is important for everyone to get along not just for the sake of the work environment, but for the sake of the company and its success, too. But how do you build relationships with co-workers to begin with? Here are five ways: 1. Be Honest And Communicate When it comes to building relationships with your co-workers, be open and honest. Encourage people to be honest with their co-workers about having a social relationship and communicate that you want to get to know them better in order to work better as a team. Some people see work as a place to show up, do what they are supposed to do, and go home, others see it as a place to spend half of their waking life and an opportunity to build social relationships. 2. Be Likable Sometimes being open and honest about building a relationship with your co-worker wont get you the response you are looking for. However, dont completely write-off someone who isnt interested in building a relationship. Even if they dont want to engage and build a friendly or social relationship, you may end up excluding them or devaluing them, and that ends up creating a negative relationship and possibly hurting the company. Instead, be sure to keep them in the communication loop and still offer assistance and support to work-related tasks. 3. Be Observant Take a look at the companys culture and use that as one of the factors to inform their decision regarding if and how to engage co-workers outside of regular work activities. If youre unsure about inviting a co-worker to grab some dinner after work, or go out for a run over the weekend, why not start small and ask them out to lunch? You dont have a whole lot to lose and, if you have a good time, it can become a regular thing and help you grow as coworkers. 4. Find A Common Interest For some, it can be a little awkward to get to know a complete stranger. However, most of the people who we consider close friends were strangers to us at one point. This can provide some relief if you are feeling uneasy about befriending a co-worker you dont know. Another way to make this a little easier is to focus on an interest you both have in common. 5. Dont Be Afraid To Aim A Little Higher (Or Lower) Though it might be easier to build a relationship with a co-worker who holds the same working status as you, it doesnt mean you cant try to build a relationship with a co-worker who outranks you or even one you outrank in the company. Mentor relationships in the workplace benefit both parties and the company gains when more employees are engaged and supporting each other. Ranks in companies do change. The person who was once in charge of you may not be if youre someone who plans on growing within the company. If the ranks between co-workers are reversed, having already established a positive relationship makes the transition run more smoothly.
