Lecture Format
Lecture time will be focused as much as possible on active learning. An important part of the lectures will be interactive (ungraded!) quizzes called ConcepTests. The ConcepTests will consist of multiple choice conceptual questions which the students will answer by holding up ashcards (please be sure to bring these to every lecture). If there is sufcient disagreement over the correct answer, the students will be asked to confer with their neighbors before answering a second time. The results of the ConcepTests (and also pre-lecture quizzes) will be used by the instructor to decide whether to spend more or less time on a particular topic. Conceptual questions similar to (or exactly like) ConcepTests used in class will be on midterms and the nal exam. Lecture time will also be dedicated to active problem solving; you will work together in groups in the classroom to complete problems with help from the instructor. These problems will be homework problems or problems that may appear on the midterm or nal exams. In order to free up lecture time for these activities, some concepts will be introduced to students through reading or by using short online lecture videos. Students will be expected to spend 30 minutes to 1 hour a week watching videos and answering quiz questions based on the material in the reading and in the videos. In return for this, we will spend time during discussion

and lecture working together on homework problems (so the hope is that students will spend 30 minutes to 1 hour less each week on homework).

Online Homework
In this course we will be using a web-based homework system called Mastering Physics. You will need to login to the website to do the homework problems, most of which will be end-of-chapter problems from the textbook but will also include tutorial problems. You are encouraged to work in groups on understanding how to do the problems and to consult the instructor and/or TAs, but you will need to work on your own in submitting your answers. Many (most?) problems will have pseudo-randomly generated numbers as part of the problem statement (so the correct answer for a particular homework problem will depend on who it is assigned to, even though the approach to get the correct answer is identical). The Mastering Physics site is: http://www.masteringphysics.com The Mastering Physics course ID for this course is: MPCARTER30977. Youll use this ID to sign up for the course at the Mastering Physics site. You will need an access code to register for Mastering Physics access (prior to being able to sign up for the course ID above). A code is included with your textbook if you buy it new. If you buy a used book, you will need to purchase an access code, you can do this at the MP website ( $50 for two-year access, $100 with access to the e-text). Homework will generally be due Wednesday by midnight; however due days/times may vary week-by-week. It is the responsibility of the student to check the Mastering Physics site (and the course web site) for homework assignments. I will make announcements at the beginning of each lecture which will include reminders of homework due dates.

Reading/Online Lecture Quizzes


Students will complete online quizzes based on assigned reading and online lecture videos. The quizzes serve two purposes: (1) to provide incentive for students to complete the reading and watch the videos and, more importantly, (2) to provide feedback to the instructor on what material the students already understand and on what material should be focused on during lecture time. In order to provide incentive to watch the videos and do the reading assignments, quizzes will be given online (also using Mastering Physics) once a week (to be completed by Monday morning). These quizzes will consist of 3-5 multiple choice questions followed by an (ungraded) free-response question which allows you to tell me what material you found most difcult and would prefer I focus on in the lecture. These quizzes will be graded primarily on participation, accounting for 4% of the course grade. However, by answering the quiz questions correctly, you have the ability to reduce the weight of your nal exam by up to 1% (i.e. you get a perfect score for up to 1% of your nal grade). Reading quizzes will generally be due Monday mornings by 7:30AM; however due days/times may vary week-by-week. It is the responsibility of the student to check the Mastering Physics site (and the course web site) for reading quiz assignments. I will make announcements at the beginning of each lecture which will include reminders of reading quiz due dates.

Discussion Format
Discussion section will be used for example problem solving and should not be considered an optional part of the course. The format of the discussion sections will also be interactive, with students working in groups on problems, aided by the TA. The problems are designed to help develop your problem solving skills and build on physical concepts learned in lecture. The discussion problems will be of a style similar to those you will see on exams for this course. In fact, it is likely that at least one question on each exam will be drawn directly from these discussion problems.

In addition, a discussion board will be available (the instructor will attempt to actively monitor and participate in the discussion board). Other policies
Exams will be closed book. For each midterm, a 3x5 index card with notes/equations (both sides) will be allowed; on the nal, 3 3x5 cards will be allowed. Simple calculators will be allowed. No blue book will be necessary, sufcient paper to complete the exams/quizzes will be provided. Students will need to bring photo ID to the midterms and nal exam. No makeup exams will be given; alternative grading arrangements for those who miss exams for good reasons (e.g. documented medical issues) will be considered. Make every effort to let me know before the exam if you might miss the exam. Exam regrades can be requested for up to a week after the exams are returned.
