Overview

Positive Boarding Control The Positive Boarding Control (PBC) process reconciles checked-in and boarded passengers and assists in achieving an on time departure. In addition it determines the names of any missing passengers for security purposes. PBC and Flight Information The requirement for PBC on any flight is built into the schedule record. The flight information display may be used to tell whether or not PBC is required for any flight, and if so what stage it is in. Below is an example of Flight Information (GFI*):

The number of passengers who have been boarded. Since boarding control has just started the number of passengers boarded will be zero.
PSGRS YET TO BOARD

The number of passengers yet to board. As boarding control has just started this will be equal to the number checked-in. As the boarding process takes place the number of passengers boarded will increase and correspondingly the number yet to board will decrease.

Number of bags checked-in with this passenger Transit passengers are considered to be those who boarded this flight at an upline station. At some stations transit passengers may leave the aircraft. They can be unboarded and reboarded at the transit point. If any transit passenger are yet to reboard their names will appear under the heading TRANSIT PASSENGERS. All passengers coming from other flights are considered as local boards, and their connecting flight information will be shown on the list. As in the case of passenger Williams in the previous example.

Note

A list of passengers to be boarded by compartment may also be displayed. For example: GPBL/F The response will show the normal passenger counts display but at the foot of this only the names of passengers yet to board in the input class will be displayed.

Note

The agent is free to enter multiple seat numbers in any sequence. In this way the agent can enter seat numbers in batches as they arrive at the boarding gate. A minimum of one seat number can be entered. The entry is limited to one line on the screen. The response is similar to that when using seat numbers. The reference number is shown before the passenger name rather than the seat number. Reference numbers can be used on flights that are open seating. The numbers print on the boarding pass instead of a seat number. Reference numbers will also be used to board passengers sitting in jumpseats, as these passengers will not be possession of normal seat numbers. A reference number always needs to be qualified by the first letter of the passenger surname. For example, passenger Thomas with reference number 112 would be input as T112.

The response shows the total number of transit passengers boarded. When PBC takes place at a station in the line of flight there may be through transit passengers. Dependent on local and carrier regulations these passengers may be required to remain onboard or deplane the aircraft. When transit passengers re-board the agent can enter them individually using the previous options or use this entry to board all, or the remaining transit passengers.

PBC cannot be finalized until either any remaining passengers are boarded or offloaded from the flight. Once the appropriate action is taken the agent must make the GPBFINAL entry again to finalize PBC. If a passenger has been offloaded and the baggage tags have not been cancelled, when PBC is finalized the response will be similar to the following:

Boarding control is finalized but the response indicates the number of bags that need to be offloaded. A message will be sent to the designated printer showing the bag tag numbers for offloading purposes. A possibility is that an agent has made an error when offloading a passenger with baggage but has not cancelled the bag tags in the system. A useful entry at this point would be to display a list of passengers who have been offloaded. G*POF This entry will list all passengers who have been offloaded. The Sabre response will be similar tom the one shown below:

If a passenger has been offloaded and the associated bag tags cancelled the baggage piece field will show zero as in the case of passenger Jones. However, if baggage tags have not been cancelled the baggage piece field will reflect the number of bags for which tags have not been cancelled. In

the above example passenger Thomas has one bag for which a tag was not cancelled. The agent could now display the full passenger record to locate the tag number(s) and take any further action as dictated by the procedures of the carrier.

The purpose of this entry is to bypass the PBC process on a flight. The Sabre response will be similar to the one shown below:

Point Out

The response indicates boarding control has been bypassed. There may be occasions when PBC will not be used for a flight. For example, a flight operates from a gate, which is not automated. If the PBC function is designated for a flight but is not going to be used then it must be bypassed. If this is not done it will not be possible to take the flight to final status (CF). Once PBC has been bypassed it cannot be restarted. If PBC has been started and the agent attempts to bypass they will receive a response similar to the following:

To bypass PBC at this point would require the agent to cancel PBC (any boarded passengers would also need to be unboarded) and then make the bypass entry.
