Workout Centre/Gym Machine and Free Weights Poster Paper and Markers

PROCEDURE
Introduction (30 min.): Attention Grabber: Show a quick YouTube clip from Pumping Iron. Assessment of Prior Knowledge: I will give students poster paper and break them into groups of 4 or 5. In their groups, students will do a brainstorming web or chart answering the following questions: Have you ever worked out before? What are some of the different workouts you know about? What kind of knowledge do you have about working out? Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: The expectations for learning for the students are that students are participating and being engaged in the all classes. Students will be given a lot of individual time to work out and benefit themselves. The expectations of behaviour are that students demonstrate safety and etiquette during the entire unit while also being a good leader and companion to others in the class. Advance Organizer/Agenda: Before class begins, I will bring poster paper and markers. I will also have the safety quiz completed. Transition to Body: After the brainstorming activity, I will do a walk around the gym with the students and talk to them about some of the different safety and etiquette aspects of the workout centre. We will have a short discussion about this and talk about how some of the different machines can help you workout. Body (30 min.): Learning Activity #1: For the remainder of class, students will be given time to have a quick workout in order to experiment with the different machines and free weights. At this time I will ask students to think about any fitness goals that they have and some of the people that may have similar goals and that they can workout with. Also, students will need to pick workout buddies in order to ensure that there is a person always spotting them as well as another person to socialize with and be aware of safety and surroundings. Assessments/Differentiation: For this class, there will be no formal assessment for the activity as students are just given time to workout and experiment and think about what they want to do for the rest of the unit. This is an introductory unit. However, I can still use observation to ensure students are practicing safety and good engagement throughout the class. Motivation: The motivation for this class will be positive reinforcement (giving positive feedback, showing

techniques, acknowledging student success) and modeling (being a physical activity leader and modeling behaviour to the students.

Closure (20 min.): Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: To end the class students will complete a safety and etiquette quiz. Feedback From Students: The feedback I will receive back from the students will be through the safety quiz. Students will show if they understand the simple foundations of what the routines are to be in the gym and prove to understand the hazards of using equipment in the workout centre. Feedback To Students: The feedback that students will be receiving back from me will be in the form of verbal comments (positive reinforcement, knowledge transfer, etc.) and the mark they will receive back from the summative quiz. Transition To Next Lesson: The next lesson will go into the goal setting process and how the students will be using this in the unit.

Workout Centre/Gym Machine and Free Weights Unit Test Goal Progress Reports YouTube

PROCEDURE
Introduction (10 min.): Attention Grabber, Assessment of Prior Knowledge and Transition to Body: We will begin the class with a Just Dance YouTube clip to warm up with. I will then ask students at this time to ask any questions that they may have about the unit test or the goal progress report that is due in this class. We will have a quick discussion review on some of the most important details we learned about in the unit. Advance Organizer/Agenda: Before the class begins, the unit test will be created. Body (40 min.): Learning Activity #1: Students will be given this time to complete their final workouts for their goal progress report in order to hand them in during the final class. If students finish early then they may study for the unit test that will take place later on in the lesson. Assessments/Differentiation: The assessments for this class will be the goal progress report (final copy), observations on technique and etiquette and the unit test which will relate to all concepts learned throughout the entire unit. Motivation: The motivation for this class will be positive reinforcement (giving positive feedback, showing techniques, acknowledging student success) and modeling (being a physical activity leader and modeling behaviour to the students, and achievement goals (setting goals and working to achieve goals and feel successful). Closure (30 min.): Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: The students will be given a half an hour to complete the unit test. It will be a basic test that has components of all the lessons the students would have learned in the unit. If everyone completes the test early, we will play a couple games or continue the work out. Feedback From Students: The feedback that I will receive back from the students will be primarily from the unit test and the goal progress report. These two components are the bigger projects in the unit and should tell me a lot about my student learning and assessment. Feedback To Students: The feedback that the students will get back from me will be in the form of a mark on their projects as well as comments that accompany the mark.
