Note: All plural pronouns have the same form of to be and verbs. Which tense should you choose? Tenses Present 1- Repeated actions Past 1- Completed Action in the Past 1- We use I will when we decide to do something at the time of speaking Ex: Oh, Ive left the door open. Ill go and shut it. Note: Do not use will to talk about what you have already decided or arranged to do. Ex: Im going on holiday next Saturday. 2- We often use will with: probably Ex: Ill probably be home late tonight.

Perfect Continuous

Ex: They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived. 2- Cause of Something in the Past

Ex: They will have been talking for over an hour by the time Thomas arrives. 2- Cause of Something in the Future

Ex: Recently, I have been feeling really tired.

Ex: Jason was tired because he had been jogging.

Ex: Jason will be tired when he gets home because he will have been jogging for over an hour.

Future with be going to: Structure: S + am / is / are + going to + V0 + O. Usage: 1- We use (be) going to when we have already decide to do something. Ex: Helen had already decided to invite lots of people before she spoke to Dave. Later that day, Helen meets Dave: Helen: Sue and I have decided to have a party. Were going to invite lots of people. Dave: Really? Would you like me to come there? 2- We use (be) going to when we predict the future. Ex: I think the weather is going to be nice this afternoon. (You can also use will in this situation: I think the weather will be nice this afternoon.) When we say something is going to happen, we think this is because of the situation now. Ex: Look at those black clouds. Its going to rain. (not It will rain) I am doing and I am going to do. We use I am doing (present continuous) when we say that we have arranged to do it for example, arranged to meet somebody, arranged to go somewhere: What time are you meeting Ann this evening? Im leaving tomorrow. Ive got my plane ticket. I am going to do something = Ive decided to do it (but perhaps not arranged to do it): Your shoes are dirty. Yes, I know, Im going to clean them (=Ive decided to clean them, but I havent arranged to clean them) Ive decided not to say here any longer. Tomorrow Im going to look for somewhere else to stay. I was going to (do something) = I intended to do it, but didnt do it: We were going to travel by train, but then we decided to go by car instead.
