I had a remarkable conversation the other day with a man whose life has been utterly transformed by Jesus. His story not only captured my attention, it also blessed my life and proved to me once again the life-changing power that only Jesus has. This dear brother grew up in awful circumstances- in poverty and without a dad. Early on he learned that anger and conflict were the two methods that he could use to make his way in life. So through military service in Vietnam then on to civilian life, where he grew rich, he was able to force his way into financial and personal success. Alcohol, drugs and gambling came in the bargain. Then everything fell apart- he lost his business, his lifestyle, his family and his place in the world. But at the worst moment of his despair, Jesus came back into his world. And when he turned his life over to Jesus, the anger and conflict that had been his companions since early on were transformed into peace and love. He told me how meaningful our church family has been in his lifes journeyhow every Sunday when he comes here to church, hes welcomed and blessed by our people. Today he has very little but told me how hes never been more at peace. It will be our churchs blessing to see him baptized into our fellowship. I couldnt imagine a better way for us as a church family to focus our attention on Easter later this month! The reason our lives can be changed is because of Jesus resurrection! The power that raised Him from the dead is the same power that raises our lives up from bondage, despair, guilt and shame into a place of peace and love. What a Savior! We will celebrate Easter with three worship services at 9, 10:30 and 11:45 am. All three services will be identical, so make your plans to come and worship with your LBC family. Sunday School will be as normal for the day. Our Passion Week begins with Palm Sunday (April 13), continues through Maundy Thursday with the Lords Supper and healing prayer, then concludes with the great Easter services on April 20. Youll notice elsewhere in this issue of The Signal some exciting news for our childrens ministry. This summer were moving in a new direction with Vacation Bible School. Instead of a single week, were inviting all our young families to join us in a summer-long LexKids Summer Road Trip. From June to August well be hosting nine different events to build your summer around. The events include Sunday mornings, family worship experiences, family fun nights and small group times. Make plans now to be a part of an exciting summer here. Finally, I want to extend a special invitation for all of you who have been considering baptism. The act of baptism doesnt save usonly faith in Jesus does that. But the New Testament is clear that having placed our faith in Jesus, were to be baptized as an outward testimony of our inward commitment to Christ. Each year we offer a special opportunity for baptism in an outdoor setting, at Gibson Pond Park, as the centerpiece of our annual church picnic. Unified Worship
We are excited about our new unified worship services that began Sunday, March 2! I had an opportunity recently to talk about unified worship in a video posted on our website (www.lexingtonbaptist.org/ one). One of the main points I wanted to make is that it is both our differences and our similarities that makes us family. One of the truly great things about unified worship is that we will all be back together. We learned several months ago that our contemporary worship services served a genuine purpose for Lexington Baptist Church, but because of it four different congregations emerged. We believe it is important for our church at this time to come together as one body. We have a worship team that looks at all aspects of our worship services and prayerfully puts together an order of service for each Sunday that is reverent, energetic, God-honoring and directed to bring all of us into an attitude of worship. We believe this team is seeking the Lords direction as we move forward in worship. Sunday mornings now include the choir and orchestra, a praise band, a team of worship leaders, traditional hymns as well as praise songs, responsive readings from time-to-time and pastoral prayers to guide us; weve baptized new believers and dedicated babies to the Lord; weve welcomed new members and recognized special events as weve done in the past. Most important, we now open the Word of God together and listen to what the Lord has to say to each of us together. What I am excited about as it relates to Senior Adult Ministry is the opportunity you will have getting to meet and better know some of the young families who have joined our church in the past five years. It is important that we embrace the multi-generational nature of this congregation and utilize the expertise we have here. Ill look forward to seeing and hearing from you about ways we can invest ourselves into our ever-growing family. Blessings!

LBC Music Ministry

Yes, we are a missions-minded church! But as we have seen through Live the Light, we need to take the Gospel of Jesus Christ out of our minds and into our feet and hands. Student Ministry Families, We have hit the middle of the spring semester and everything is in full gear. This month students have the opportunity to serve at Loving Lexington and decorate their TOMS on April 5th. Encounter 431 has been incredible all semester and I would love to see any students not already connected check it out. We meet on Wednesday nights from 6 to 7 pm in the FLC building. If your student is interested in attending Journey Camp in June, then they need to sign up soon. We only have a set number of slots available to us for that week. Finally, graduating seniors, make sure to be ready for all of your activities in May. You will have the chance to participate in Senior Blessing Night and Senior Recognition Sunday.

This month, we are allowing our kids to love on other kids. We know longterm hospital stays for children can be lonely. We want to show these kids just how much we love them! During the month of April, our kids will be decorating pillowcases to be delivered to the children of Palmetto Richland Childrens Hospital as well as focusing on praying for children with illnesses. It is our hope that these small surprises will brighten their day and remind them that they are prayed for and loved. Join us April 30th for all the fun!

I have heard before that being a parent is the closest we will come to understanding Gods love for us while we are on this earth. As my children grow, I cannot help but see how my relationship with them parallels my walk with the Lord. When my boys were babies and had episodes of sickness, I remember well laying on the floor by their cribs. I did not want to leave their side. I wanted to be as close to them as possible. Even now, when they are hurt or sick, I want to hold them and be right there with them. If I cannot stand the thought of leaving them alone, how much more must our Father want to hold us and comfort us when we are hurt or sick. I think about how I can be in the depths of sleep and all it takes is the word Mommy being uttered from one of their mouths, and I am up. If I cannot ignore that small voice in the night, how much more must the Lord turn his attention when he hears one of us call out his name. I also think about the pathway from my bedroom to theirs. The countless, endless trips I have made back and forth, especially when they were babies. I can walk that path with my eyes closed. Lord, I pray the path from me to you will be so familiar, so well worn in prayer, that I can run to you and not get lost along the way. God has given us such an adventure through the blessing of motherhood. LexKids Summer Road Trip

We want kids who place their trust in God, not only In a moment. At VBS. On the last night of camp. But every day! This summer, we want to move from making church a week-long attraction to a summer-long attraction- which will more effectively make Jesus a life-long attraction. So, this summer we are going on a road trip- and were staying right here in Lexington for all the fun! We are extending our week-long VBS to the whole summer! From June to August, we are hosting nine different events throughout the entire summer. These events include a Sunday morning, church-wide kids celebration, family worship experiences, family fun nights and small group hang times.

When you give to missions at LBC, youre becoming a part of something so much bigger than this church body and this building on Main Street. We believe in making disciples of Jesus Christ in Lexington and around the world, and we take great pride and pleasure in ministering to people in our own community and beyond. Take a look at some of these amazing stories about the lasting impact missions can make, written by members of our own church family.

The Impact of Missions

Approximately five months ago, during a Monday night feeding of the homeless at Columbias Finley Park, we met a person named Sharon. She is approximately 60 years of age, grew up in a Christian family and her 87 year-old father is a pastor. The conversation further revealed that she is a born again believer that has a drinking problem. I shared with Sharon that when I became a believer at the age of 40, I continued to smoke cigarettes and drink alcoholic beverages. However, at different points in time I felt the need to ask the Lord if it was okay for me to continue those habits. He answered with two distinct messages, very easy to comprehend, that told me that it was wrong. I explained how prayer enabled me to withstand each and every temptation, and that the Lord eventually removed the desire for both. I told Sharon that I would be praying for God to do the same for her, and, I reiterated how important it was for a believer to stay in the Word, to pray and to follow Him. I have talked to Sharon twice since our initial meeting and she hasnt had a drink in the last three months. We praise the Lord and give Him the Glory; will you please join me in praying for Sharon? ~ Ed Meek

Saved by Grace
As we rode our bikes into a small town called Qorakol, a group of young men called us to stop into their restaurant. I shared my testimony with one of them named Jamshid, and he listened very attentively. Then he shared with me an oral tradition kind of story he had heard that sounded similar to the Pharisee and tax collector parable. This created a perfect opportunity for me to tell him how the Bible teaches the good news that were saved by grace, not by works. ~ Keith Stokeld

Finding Common Ground

In July I was privileged to serve missionary families who live in Central Asia by caring for their young children. God gave me brief times for conversation with their Moms that were very impactful for me. My heart was touched as Shelly told me how appreciative she was that I was willing to give of my time, and that I had come so far to take care of her children. She also expressed how much it meant to her that I had noticed that she was having trouble with one of her eyes and had let her know that I was praying for healing for her. God again broadened my perspective on what He is doing in His world, and I thank Him for that! ~ Janet Butler 12

Serving Missionaries

We can Change Their Oil, But Christ Can Change their Life.
My brother lived close by in Prosperity, and this looked like a great place to settle when we retired. We moved here in 2007 and started with LBC in late 2008. A few years ago, my brother left us and moved back up north. After one of Cecies meetings about our local Missions Ministry, I have been involved with the Oil Change Ministry for widows and single moms for the past couple of years. I used to change my own oil, so I figured I should be able to handle this. Right away, Kevin Barber and Jerry Brock saw my real talent and had me check the lights and beep the horn as part of the safety inspection! Soon my wife, Evelyn, started to help out in the waiting room where our customers were served some light refreshments while they waited for their cars. I soon learned that this is where the rubber hits the road (pardon the automotive pun). While the guys are getting to learn what each car needs, relationships are being developed with each driver: a listening ear to a story about a lost job, a shoulder to cry on for a mom with a couple of kids whose husband suddenly left them, a prayer for some physical or spiritual healing or just sharing some information about how to join LBC and get involved in making disciples. We can change their oil, but Christ can change their life. ~ Cal Yngve

Showered with Love

Last fall our Sunday school class had the opportunity to host a baby shower for two women at Samaritans Well Womens Shelter. As we prepared, we prayed that this opportunity to provide these women with material things would be an opportunity for them to see the love of Christ. God was faithful to answer these prayers. Both women had grown up in church, but through a series of events, had stepped into difficult situations. One of the women was reunited with her family at the baby shower, and they were blown away that strangers had shown such love to their daughter. They invited their daughter back into their home and began restoring that relationship. Both of the women shared that they had never experienced such a display of the love of Christ. I have since kept in touch with both of these women and have developed friendships with them and brought them to several events at LBC. Not only did it bless them, but it has been such a blessing to me to reach out of my comfort zone with these women and to understand the importance of obedience to Gods call. God has since opened many doors for Will and I, our SS class, and the church at Samaritans Well. He had much bigger plans than a simple baby shower. ~ Jenny Coker

Just Like Us
Her name is Martha. She is just like you and me. She came from a good family, had a good job, two children, educated... not exactly a criminal type. She made one mistake: she got overwhelmed, frustrated and angry with her children while she was driving and crashed into another vehicle. She was in the hospital for three months, as were the people in the other vehicle. Now, she is in jail for attempted murder. It can happen in a split second- a wrong decision, a wrong reaction, a bad choice. It could happen to any of us. Dont say it could never happen to you... people get in trouble and wind up in jail or prison. Jesus had compassion on these people, and He said we should visit them, not forget about them, think we are better than them and have the attitude that they deserve what they got. We shouldnt lock them up and throw away the key because it could be any of us. I love prison ministry because the people are so receptive and ready for someone to help them, to give them hope, to know somebody cares what happens to them. ~ Carolyn McNeill 13

One of the ministries we support through the Global Missions Offering is Lexington Interfaith Community Services, also known in short as LICS. Heres a little bit about what our church (and others that donate) were able to help them accomplish in 2013 through our investment into their ministry: 20,000 people were served in Lexington County 11,500 of those people received food either once or monthly throughout the year 7,000 received free clothing 640 received financial assistance 1,000 were given referrals to other agencies to help prepare families for a sustainable life style 17 people were placed in jobs from July to December To get involved, make a donation, volunteer or find out more, visit licssc.org or contact our missions office at 803.996.8836.
