Dear Parents and Student: This letter is to acquaint you with the philosophy and program of the Physical Education Department at Houck Middle School Physical fitness acti!ities begin with play early in life" starting with arm and leg mo!ements in infancy #s children grow" they need the guidance of parents and teachers in selecting indi!idual and team play acti!ities for physical and emotional de!elopment $esides helping build physical fitness and a sense of physical power" play is a child%s outlet for e&pressing 'oy" frustration" anger" and pride (roup play and sports encourage growth in emotional stability and maturity" and offer that good feeling of )belonging * The ability to win or lose graciously and take pride in the success of others are added !alues learned through these acti!ities" which also pro!ide lessons in honesty" cooperation" teamwork" tolerance" and consideration for others Parents and teachers know that when students are in good health" they get better grades in school" while gaining self+esteem and self+confidence ,e at Houck Middle School belie!e that well planned physical education programs can help children establish lifetime patterns of wholesome and rewarding physical acti!ities" and can help students understand the relationship of e&ercise" diet" rest" and rela&ation to all aspects of health

PE CLOTHES
-lothes worn in physical education should adhere to the following guidelines: . .nappropriate PE clothing can interfere with: # student%s learning process" student%s acti!e participation" safety of indi!idual $ personal hygiene - maintenance of gym floors and equipment -lothing /equirements # Shirt 0 Houck PE shirt or an appropriate shirt with student%s name written on it in permanent ink 1 no e&ceptions 2 3 sweatshirt4recommended for morning class or for cool weather $ Shorts 0 must allow freedom of mo!ement 3 stretch material 1 cotton 5 cotton blend or nylon 2 with elastic waist 1 no 'eans or button fly 2 - Shoes 0 must be an athletic type and laced appropriately 3 no boots or open toed shoes 6 separate pair for PE is recommended but not required 7abeling /equirements # Grade

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS

32 /egular school clothes will not be allowed to be worn as PE clothes 62 Tennis shoes and socks must be worn at all times 9or safety reasons tennis shoes must be tied properly <2 During class acti!ity" lea!e watches and 'ewelry 1chains" bracelets" rings" and long or loop earrings2 in lockers for safety reasons The PE department is "ot responsible for any lost or stolen 'ewelry =2 PE clothes will be taken home each Thursday or 9riday to be washed and it is the student%s responsibility to remember them for Monday .t is recommended that student ha!e a second set of PE clothes as back+up >2 .f students are well enough to attend school" he5she is well enough to dress down and to do their best in class .f the student is too sick to dress down" he5she should stay home .f a student is well enough to attend school but still cannot participate in dressing down or daily acti!ity we require a doctors note ?2 #ny e&cuse for more than three days will require doctor !erification @2 :ormal physical acti!ity is ad!ocated during menstruation by medical authorities Therefore" girls are not e&cused from participation or dressing at this time A2 9or safety reasons we ask that girls do not ha!e long finger nails" especially false or acrylics

GRA(ING POLIC)
Students earn their grades E!ery student has the potential to recei!e high grades regardless of their skills or limitations # point system will be implemented whereby each student will earn points for each day for participation and effort Students choosing not to participate will ha!e points deducted" and students doing outstanding work can earn the ma&imum points gi!en Teachers will go o!er the point distribution the first day of class (rades will reflect off the following categories:
