The present file contains some useful information about this version of the inst alled SPRING suite,

including some explanations about running the Spring programs for the first time, using the on-line help sys tem, and directions on install procedures for the example databases available on the INPE web site. INSTALLATION After a successful installation of the SPRING suite, the contents of the install ation directory will be: Files: README: this same file; spring.ini: file responsible for the selection of the language; spring: executable program "spring"; scarta: executable program "scarta"; impima: executable program "impima"; iplot: executable program "iplot"; tmesa: executable program "tmesa"; spr2tlib: executable program "spr2tlib"; s_spring: executable script of system "spring"; s_scarta: executable script of system "scarta"; s_impima: executable script of system "impima"; s_iplot: executable script of system "iplot"; s_tmesa: executable script of system "tmesa"; s_spr2tlib: executable script of system "spr2tlib"; Directories: etc: s, datum, projections, bitmaps: helpeng: EXECUTING SPRING The applications SPRING, SCARTA, IMPIMA, IPLOT, TMESA and SPR2TLIB must be execu ted through their corresponding scripts: s_spring, s_scarta, s_impima, s_iplot, s_tmesa and s_spr2tlib. To execute any one of these applications, the following commands must be given: % cd {installation_directory} % ./s_spring or % ./s_scarta or % ./s_impima or % ./s_tmesa or % ./s_iplot or % ./s_spr2tlib ON-LINE HELP The on-line help files are installed automatically by the SPRING install procedu re. (to run spr2tlib) (to run iplot) (to run tmesa) (to run impima) (to run scarta) (to run spring) contains several types of files as: messages, color lookup table etc.; contains the bitmaps used by the applications; contains the English version of the help files.

The SPRING suite on-line help uses the configured browser (defined in the enviro nment) to show help texts. T he use of the Firefox browser is recommended. INSTALLING EXAMPLE DATABASES On the Spring project web site (www.dpi.inpe.br/spring) there are several exampl e databases and a tutorial, available for download. These files can be used for learning how to use the Spring suite. All the datab ases are presented to the user in a "database_name.exe" or "database_name.tar.gz" file format. In order to install these files on WINDOWS, double-click the file "database_name .exe" and follow the instructions. In order to install these files on LINUX, use the following command sequency: % cd ~/springdb % gunzip database_name.tar.gz % tar xvf database_name.tar The databases can be installed in any directory. The "C:\springdb" and "~/sprin gdb" directory (springdb directory in the current user account) is only an example.
