CVEN 210 Properties and Testing of Materials (3-2-3)


Composition and properties of Portland Cements, special cements, gypsum, lime, and asphaltic materials. Properties and testing of aggregates and concrete. Concrete mix design. Use of stones, blocks and bricks. Ferrous and nonferrous metals. Wood. The laboratory component includes: tests on Portland cement, sieve analysis and grading of aggregate, specific gravity and absorption of coarse aggregate, Los Angeles abrasion test, slump test, measurement of air content, concrete mix, crushing of concrete cubes, split-tension test, rebound hammer and PUNDIT. Prerequisite: CHEM101, CHEM103

CVEN 211 Engineering Mechanics (3-3-1)


Fundamental concepts and principles of mechanics, vectors, and force systems. Centroids and centers of gravity, Moments of inertia. Concepts of free-body-diagram, principles of equilibrium of particles and rigid bodies in two and three dimensions. External forces and concept of stress. Stresses and strains, Axial loading and axial deformation, Hooks law, Statically indeterminate members, Stresses due to temperature. Torsion. Pure bending. Transverse loading and shear stresses in beams and thin walled members. Multiaxial loading. Transformation of stresses and strains. Principal stresses and strains. Axially compressed members and buckling of columns. Prerequisite: MATH102

CVEN 212 Fluid Mechanics (3-3-1)


Elementary mechanics of fluids with emphasis on hydrostatics, control volume analysis of flowing fluids using kinematics, continuity, energy, and momentum principals; similitude, pipe flow. Prerequisite: PHYS191, PHYS192, CVEN211

CVEN 220 Analysis of Structures (3-3-1)


Structural Engineering. Calculation of reactions for statically determinate beams, frames, trusses, and composite structures. Force calculation in trusses. Shear and moment diagrams for beams and frames. Deflection calculations. Influence lines for determinate structures. Arches and cables. Introduction to indeterminate structures. Prerequisite: CVEN211

CVEN 230 Geotechnical Engineering (3-3-1)


Soil Composition, soil-water system, classification of soil, permeability and seepage, stress distribution in soil, compressibility of soil, settlement analysis for shallow foundations, shear strength of soil. The laboratory component includes: visual inspection, sieve and hydrometer analyses, Atterberg limits, constant and falling head permeability, compaction, field density, one-dimensional consolidation, direct shear, triaxial, and unconfined compression testing. Prerequisite: CVEN211

CVEN 270 Surveying for Construction (3-3-1)


Introduction surveying measurements Vertical Distance Measurements: different types of levels leveling procedure and computations profiles and cross sections. Horizontal Distance Measurements (EDM): Taping, Electronic Distance Measurements. Angular Measurements Theodolites and total stations. Traverse Computations and adjustment Determination of areas and volumes. Setting out of construction works. Basic computer aided surveying.

CVEN 320 Design of Reinforced Concrete Members (3-3-1)


Introduction to limit-state design of reinforced concrete structures. Loads and load combinations acting on reinforced concrete structures. Analysis and design of rectangular beams and one-way slabs, Tbeams, doubly-reinforced beams. Bond and development length of reinforcement. Deflections and cracks. Design and analysis of columns subject to axial load and bending. Prerequisites: CVEN220

CVEN 321 Analysis of Indeterminate Structures (3-3-1)


Analysis of indeterminate structures by the Least-Work method, slope deflection, and moment distribution. Deflection of indeterminate structures. Introduction to matrix analysis of structures: trusses, beams, and frames. Prerequisite: CVEN220

CVEN 330 Foundation Engineering I (3-3-1)


Subsurface investigation (planning, boreholes, open and test pits, soil sampling, rock coring, visual inspection, SPT, CPT, vane shear test, plate load test, field permeability test, geophysical test methods, exploration report), soil bearing capacity for shallow foundations, lateral earth pressure, stability of retaining walls, introduction to deep foundations, computer application. Prerequisite: CVEN230

CVEN 340 Analysis and Design of Hydraulic Systems (3-3-1)


Applications of fluid mechanics to engineering and natural systems including closed conduits and pipe networks, open channel flow, turbo machinery, and hydrology. Prerequisite: CVEN212

CVEN 350 Environmental Engineering (3-3-1)


Introduction to water pollution, air pollution, land pollution, noise pollution, hazardous and solid waste, and their control. Environmental impact statements and global pollution issues. Prerequisite: CHEM101, CHEM103, CVEN212

CVEN 360 Highway Engineering (3-2-3)


Functional highway classification, Design control and criteria, Highway cross section, Horizontal alignment design including design of curves and superelevation, Vertical alignment design including grades and vertical curves, Highway drainage, Intersection design of both at-grade and interchanges. The design lab involves route location and design of rural roadway segment and estimation of earthwork quantities and costs using Mass-Haul diagram. Prerequisite: CVEN270

CVEN 380 Construction Engineering (3-3-0)


Topics covered in this course are: introduction to the construction industry, management processes, time & cost processes, project budgeting, management of construction equipment, safety of construction sites, legal aspects in construction and construction claims. Introduction to computer applications in construction engineering. Prerequisite: Departmental approval

CVEN 381 Contracts, Specifications, and Local Regulations (3-3-0)


Law of contracts; formation principles. Performance of breach of contract obligation. Termination of agreement; pre-qualification. Contract for construction and engineering services. Specifications. Professional liability; insurance and bonds. Water rights. Environmental law. Arbitration of disputes. Local regulations. Prerequisite: CVEN380

CVEN 399 Practical Training (3-0-3)


Supervised 8 weeks training period at any approved engineering concern (consulting, contracting, industrial, government), intended to provide students with hands-on experience at the work place. Evaluation is based on daily performance, supervisors input, students report, and s short presentation Prerequisite: Departmental approval

CVEN 401 Civil Engineering Design Project I (1-1-1)


Analytical, design, experimental, or field work carried out in accordance with a pre-approval project plan under the supervision of faculty member(s). Prerequisite: 100 credit hours

CVEN 420 Design of Steel Structures (3-3-1)


Introduction to different types of steel structures. Loads and load combinations acting on steel structures. Analysis and design concepts, LEFD design concepts. Properties of steel, Common steel sections. Structural systems and general layout. Design of tension members. Types and failure modes of bolted connections, Analysis and design of concentric and eccentric bolted connections. Types and failure modes of welded connections, Factored resistance of welds, design of concentric and eccentric welded connections. Design of axially loaded compression members and columns, column base plates. Design of steel flexural members, Local bucking of beams, Lateral torsion-flexure buckling, Crippling of webs, Floor beams, Purlins, Crane track girders. Analysis and design of beam-columns, Cross section strength, overall member strength. Design of unstiffened and stiffened plate girders. Composite steel-concrete constructions, composite slabs, composite beams, composite columns, shear studs. Prerequisite: CVEN220

CVEN 421 Computer-Aided Analysis and Design (3-3-1)


Components and operation of microcomputers. Elementary programming using FORTRAN, BASIC, and MathCad. Use of commercial software in the analysis and design (STAAD3, PCA, SAP90, ....). Development and presentation of design projects using Computer-aided design/Drawing package. Prerequisites: CVEN321

CVEN 422 Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures (3-3-1)


Analysis and design of : irregular beams, deep beams, and continuous beams. Introduction to flooring systems. Analysis and design of two-way floor systems by: coefficient method and yield line theory. Analysis and design of irregular (circular, triangular and trapezoidal) slabs and cantilever slabs. Analysis and design of framed structures. Analysis and design of uniaxial and biaxial long columns. Torsional analysis and design of reinforced concrete members. Analysis and design of reinforced concrete foundations: isolated footings, wall footings, combined footing, and strap footings. Analysis and design of retaining walls.

CVEN 423 - Selected Topics in Structural Design (3-3-1)


Basic Concepts of prestressing, Pre- and post-tension techniques. Wires, bars, stands, cables, tendons and prestressing end anchors. Fibre stresses in a prestressed beam, Load balancing. Permissible stress in concrete and Prestressing steel. Prestress partial losses. Prestressed concrete hollow core slabs. Elastic design of prestressed concrete members, Selection of concrete section, tendon eccentricity and profile. Flexure design of prestressed concrete elements, Shear and torsion strength design. Indeterminate PC structures. Rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures using ACM, FRP composites, Bond strength of FRP to concrete. Flexure strengthening of beams and slabs. Shear strengthening of beams. rehabilitation of columns. Other topics may be selected as alternative (or in addition) to the above, such as: design of reinforced concrete bridges, design of concrete shell structures, design of water retaining structures and water tanks, seismic design of buildings. CVEN 424 Structural Matrix Analysis (3-3-1)


Matrix Analysis of Plane Framed Structures: force method and displacement method. Formulation of stiffness and flexibility matrices. Introduction to plastic analysis and design, and finite element method. Introduction to plates and shells. Prerequisite: CVEN321

CVEN 430 Foundation Engineering II (3-3-1)


Analysis and design of deep foundations (piers, caissons, piles), stability of open cuts, stability and design of sheet-pile walls (cantilever, free and fixed earth support types, ties, wales), design of secantpile walls, computer applications. Prerequisite: CVEN330

CVEN 431 Selected Topics in Geotechnical Engineering (3-3-1)


Stability of slopes, design of dewatering systems, characteristics of desert problematic soils (swelling soil, dune sand, salt-bearing soil Sabkha, liquefiable sand), soil improvement methods (mechanical, chemical), description and use of geosynthetics, stability and design of reinforced-earth walls, design of liner systems for liquid containments and solid waste landfills, computer applications. Prerequisite: CVEN230

CVEN 432 Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics (3-3-1)


Soil and rock cycle, engineering characteristics of geological structures (joints, faults, folds, landforms), seismic forces, substance and mass properties of rock (compressibility, shear strength, permeability), rock as a construction material, weathering and engineering aspects of transported soils (alluvial, colluvial, glacial, coastal, Aeolian, lacustrine, residual soils), groundwater and soil stability. Prerequisite: CVEN230

CVEN 440 Water Resources Planning and Management (3-3-1)


An introduction to basic concepts and issues of water resources management, emphasizing on water law and rights, water resources planning, institutional and organizational arrangements, sustainable water resources development. Case studies illustrate the role of political, social, economic, and environmental factors in decision making. Prerequisite: CVEN212

CVEN 441 Groundwater Engineering (3-3-1)


Physical properties of groundwater and aquifers, principals and fundamental equations of porous media flow and mass transport, well hydraulics and pumping test analysis, role of groundwater in the hydrologic cycle, groundwater quality and contamination. Prerequisite: CVEN212

CVEN 442 Selected Topics in Water Resources (3-3-1)


Advanced topics in water resources delivered in form of lecture, laboratory, or combination. The course will be tailored to match the current needs of Qatari society and topics will vary from term to term. Prerequisite: CVEN340

CVEN 450 Water Treatment Design (3-3-1)


Pretreatment studies, precipitation softening, coagulation and flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, sludge handling, chlorination, ozonation. Plant hydraulics, flow measurements, pumps, instrumentation and control, tertiary treatment. Prerequisite: CVEN350

CVEN 451 Wastewater Treatment Design (3-3-1)


Processes and designs used in wastewater treatment, water quality standards, wastewater characteristics, application of biochemical oxygen demand, sources and effects of pollution, physical, chemical, and biological wastewater treatment processes, and waste sludge management. Prerequisite: CVEN350

CVEN 452 Solid Waste Management (3-3-1)


Investigations of the regulatory and technical issues affecting solid waste management, with an emphasis on the principals governing the transport, fate, and remediation of solid waste in the subsurface, including advection, dispersion, sorption, inter phase mass transfer reactions. Prerequisite: CVEN350

CVEN 460 Pavement Materials and Design (3-2-3)


Review of soil properties, Soil classification for highway construction, Soil field compaction and construction equipments, Bituminous materials: uses, properties, and tests of asphalted materials, Design of asphalt concrete using Marshall Method and Superpave systems. Design of Flexible pavements: Structural components of pavement, Soil stabilization, Asphalt Institute method and AASHTO pavement design methods. Design of Rigid pavements: Materials, Joints, Stresses Thickness design using AASHTO and PCA design methods. Course Lab involves all tests on asphalt, CBR and Marshall Method. Prerequisite: CVEN230

CVEN 461 Traffic Engineering (3-3-1)

CVEN 481 Project Planning and Scheduling (3-2-2)


Introduction to Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), network methods of project planning & scheduling, such as AON, PERT, bar-charting, line-of-balance, and VPM techniques. Project compression analysis and control. Computer applications in project management. The Laboratory component of this course covers modern project management tools and techniques on the personal computer. Prerequisite: CVEN380
