Computer as we know it today had its beginning with a

19th century English mathematics professor name Charles Babbage. He designed the analytical engine and it was this design that the basic frame work of the computers of today are based on. Computers can be classified into three generations; First Generation: 1937 1946. In 1937 the first electronic digital computer was built by Dr John V Atanasoff and Clifford Berry.

It was called the Atanasoff-Berry Computer(ABC). This

particular computer weighed 30 tons and had 18,000 vacuum tubes use for processing. When this computer was turned on for the first time, lights dims in sections of Philadelphia. Computer of this generation could only perform single task and no operating system. Second Generation: 1947-1962; This generation of computers used transistors instead of vacuum tubes. In 1951, the first computer for commercial use was introduced to the public; the Universal Automatic Computer(UNIVAC1) In this generation computers had memory and operating system. Storage media such as tape and disk were used, printers are for output devices.

Third Generation: 1963-present; The invention of integrated circuit brought us the third generation of computers. With this invention, computers became smaller, more powerful, reliable and able to run many different programs at the same time. This era introduce Microsoft Disk Operating System(MS-DOS) IN 1980 IBM introduced the personal computer(PC) in 1981 for home and office use. Years later, Apple gave us the Macintosh Computer, and in the 90s, windows operating system was given birth to.

Brief History Of Computer

In the beginning , there were no operating system, no programming languages or compilers, no mice and no windows, and the earth was without form and void. This write up is about to look back the past fifty years or more and see how operating systems has evolved. 1945-1957: FORTRAN was develop. With high level languages , programmers no longer had to understand the architecture of a computer. FORTRAN (FORmula TRANslator) had to fit in 1,024 12 character words and still enough room for data. It often took two hours to compile a program. 1963 Burroughs Master Control Program(MCP). This operating system is for the B5000 system. MCP was the first operating system written in a high level language and can only run on B5000 system.

The B5000 system running MCP gave the user multiprogramming, multiprocessing, virtual storage. 1972 IBM comes out with VM: the Virtual Machine Operating System was build to run different operating system to debug them and measure their performance. It pretty much died off after this until the very late 1980s but are enjoying a renaissance in the 2000s. 1973 UNIX 4th edition is published: UNIX was mostly written in the C Programming language. It comes with an editor, assembler, calculator, compiler. 1975 CP/M: An operating system for 8 bit intel-based PCs 2008 Android Operating System; Its a free OS platform for mobile phones.
