CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1

Background of the Research In this part of the study the researcher is going to describe the justification of

the research, relevant researches conducted by previous researchers, position of this research, and significance of this research. 1.1.1 Justification of the research

In this research, the researcher found out the difficulties in translating English into Indonesian by annotating several aspects, such as grammatical, lexical and cultural, as well as stylistic features that may pose problems for the researcher. The researcher has decided to conduct a research in annotated translation from English into Indonesian in order to widen her experience in translation which is in line with her study and to detect the problems emerging during the process of translation. Since the researchers native language is Indonesian, then the translation chosen by the researcher is English into Indonesian. Since Indonesian is the researchers native language, then the researcher has ta en an English text to be translated into Indonesian. The researcher has chosen an English !ovel Remembrance by "aith #ichmond, a famous writer from $ustralia who interested in philosophy.

Rememberance was #ichmonds first novel which conveying a uni%ue story about an atheist $ustralian family lived in the religious neighbourhood. 1.1.2 Relevant researches.

She analy&ed the subject of homosexuality in medieval ,apan by analy&ing 0) samples consists of medieval wor s containing homosexual fiction in +uramachi period <)4/1>)811= and literatures produced in an earlier era to find the evidences of how the subject of homosexuality is treated in the medieval ,apan. She found that the subject of homosexuality did not meet with disapproval in medieval ,apan or even in earlier eras. ?n the contrary, it was appareantly widely practiced by priests, warriors and even commoners.

Position of the Research.

The descriptive method used in the first relevant research is not going to be covered by this study. The method used in this reasearch is annotated translation

which is the similarity with all the relevant research above. The difference of this reasearch and the relevant researches mentioned is the text chosen by the researcher. The text chosen by the researcher is an English !ovel entitled Remembrance which tell the story about an atheist $ustralian family life, while the other researchers chose another text as mentioned.

Significance of the Research.

The result of this research can be used as input by students of translation and translators in general as the difficulties during the process of translation will be presented.

Problem Statement

Purpose of the Research

5ased on problems mentioned above, the purposes of this research are' a. to attain factual information concerning the problems faced by the researcherAtranslator in translating the source textB b. to give plausible solutions to the difficulties.

Scope of the Research This research is only translating an English novel into Indonesian, for as many

as fifteen thousand words and at the same time investigating and analy&ing the problems that the researcher found, as well as finding the solution for those problems, including the grammatical, lexical and cultural aspects.
