Technical understanding of the processes of welding was identified as the source of the difficulties encountered in establishing a proper welding structure for the company. Material behaviour when welded and its effect Joint design, material behaviour and general welding processes such as conditions for material preheat or post-weld heat treatment.

Analysis of the below outlined tasks, will indicate that most of them, can either with extra input, or are already being implemented in the companys design and manufacturing process. Further analysis will immediately point out the

Identification of external duties to be contracted out: European Welding Engineer for the design of weld joints Duties: Design of welded joints (to include weld details such as appropriate weld dimensions, appropriate welding consumables, edge preparation dimensions and specifications, appropriate welding process), preparation of required pWPS, qualifying them through an external company if necessary, involvement in production planning w.r.t detailing how welds are to be made i.e. monitoring the activities of the welding technicians), welding sequence descriptions, etc. assessment of such conditions as PWHT if necessary. Monitoring the drawing, because when the design is completed, he examines the drawings, to ensure that the correct symbols have been appended at the right places. Responsible Welding Coordinator (RWC): added duties of the weld engineer, coordinating the quality management system as required. External company to qualify the preliminary welding procedure specifications (pWPS) Equipment maintenance company (Internal candidate should be trained by this same company for simple periodic tests of the equipment in between maintenances) Equipment that should be handed to them: a. Exhaust system b. Calibration/maintenance of the welding equipment c. Welding helmets d. Crane maintenance
