Inequalities

MAT 221

Math is a very interesting and difficult topic for me at times, but I must admit that I enjoyed this weeks lesson on inequalities. I never knew that there were calculations for body mass index until now. Below, I have worked out calculations according to my height that let me

Inequalities

know which weight(s) is healthy for me. In addition, I will also work calculations in between as well as the calculations that show which level of weight(s) that I need to stay away from, if I wish to extend my years here. According to page 151 in our textbook, we were given the formula for Body Mass Index or BMI as stated below: BMI= 703W H2 Next, we were asked to calculate the four intervals based on our own individual heights. My height is 72.23 inches. The various intervals include three compound between inequalities and one average inequality. Whenever BMI shows up in the inequalities I will substitute the formula and solve the inequality for W to point out the weight ranges that fit each category for my specified height. As documented, the first interval shows those who might have a longer life span than average. The compound inequality for this is: 17<BMI<22 17<703W<22 H2 17<703W<22 72.232 Here H2 has been replaced by my actual height in inches. This is referred to as an equivalent inequality.

Inequalities

17<703W <22 5217.1729

During the next step, I will multiply all three terms by the denominator.

17(5217.1729)<703W(5217.1729<22(5217.1729) In this step, cancelling is done. 5217.1729 88691.939<703W<114777.8 88691.939<703W<114777.8 703 703 703 The multiplications were performed. Likewise, all three terms were divided by 703 to isolate W.

126<W<163.3 Individuals with a height measurement of 72.23inches might have a longer than average life span if they weigh between 126 lbs and 163.3 lbs. Now, I am going to solve the second inequality formula for W before I plug in the values to find W. 23<703W<25 H2 23H2<703W<25H2 23H2 <W<25H2 703 703 Divide all of the terms by 703 to isolate W. This is an equivalent inequality to solve for the second weight interval. First, multiply the terms by H2 to take it out of the denominator.

Inequalities

Now, I will plug in my height squared (5217.1729) to find out the second weight interval. 23(5217.1729)<W< 25(5217.1729 703 119994.98<W<130249.32 703 171<W<185 703 Division performed. 703 Multiplication performed.

Individuals with a height of 72.23 inches who weigh between 171 lbs and 185 lbs are probably not overweight. Moving forward, I will most likely use this method for the next two intervals because it seems simpler to me. The third interval determines the range for people who are probably overweight for this height. Next, I will plug 25.1 and 29.9 into the above compound inequality in the place of 23 and 25 (which were used for the one above). 25.1(5217.1729<W<29.9(5217.1729) 703 703 Multiplications performed.

130951.04<W<155993.47 703 186.3<W<221.9 703

Division performed.

People of height 72.23 inches who weigh between 186.3 lbs and 221.9 lbs are most likely overweight.

Inequalities

Last, the fourth interval demonstrates the range for individuals who are obese at this particular height .This is not a compound inequality which means that I only need to use the middle and right terms of the basic inequality with the opposite pointing arrow and substitute 30 for 29.9 W>30(5217.1729) 703 W>156515.19 703 W>223 Division carried out. Multiplication carried out.

Individuals who have a height of 72.23 inches who weigh 223 lbs or more are most likely obese and would most definitely need to make some life/ or death changes for longevity. Even though this interval goes to positive infinity, we know that the weight of a human plays a detrimental role in their health. People with a height of 72.23 inches who weigh between 171 lbs and 185 lbs are probably not overweight in accordance to my calculations. In regards to a set notation, this could be written as follows: (x signifies the set of those who are probably not overweight for the particular height.) (Then x = {w|w>171 and w<185} where w represents the weight of the individual.) In interval notation this would be stated as X= (171, 185) Also, graphed on a number line, this interval would possibly look like this:
----------------(____________________)-----------

Inequalities

171

185

In conclusion, before completing this assignment on Body Mass Index, I had no idea that calculations could be performed to determine them. Calculations such as these are important to ones health, because it determines if one is obese, overweight, probably not overweight, or if they could possibly have a longer life span than average. Body mass index is one way to determine in so many words if an individual is healthy or not, but there are many other factors that also play a role in a humans longevity. I have learned that I need to stay within the range of 126 and 163.3 lbs to possibly have a longer than average life span in regards to my height. Math is amazing, and I look forward to learning other calculations which will help me with life/ or death (health-related) decisions in my life.
