A. INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH Text and Author (include this information in the introductory paragraph) Text A: Daily Mail, Text B: Green Peace a) Motivator (this sentence is the first sentence of your written task. It needs to catch the readers attention. It should not be a rhetorical question or a quotation) In this day and age, social media has become a phenomenal influence upon people within modern societies. a) Introduction of Texts and Authors Establishments such as Greenpeace and the Daily Mail use different forms of social media to attract individuals, as well as influence them to believe in their message. a) Theme (how are the two texts similar?) Both texts reflect an overall theme of responsibility, how Shell should take responsibility for their failure in drilling in the arctic and save wildlife rather than take advantage of global warming and help destroy the Arctic land. a) Differences (although the two texts may be the same, what are the main differences?) These two texts may seem similar , since they share the same themes and audience, they both have different writing styles and use different techniques. These differences are largely accounted for by the different form in which they were written, Text A being an article while Text B is a print Advertisment. B. BODY PARAGRAPHS Body Paragraph 1 Context, Audience, Purpose a) Context: a. What is happening in the lives of each artist? What makes them write these songs? The arctic is melting due to the effects of global warming, and shell has taken

this opportunity to drill for oil in the Arctic and in the process it has , as stated by text A and B, destroy the habitat of the polar bears and has not doen anything to help prevent the extinction of the wildlife in the region, or even the region itself. Text A is a news report published electronically by the Daily Mail. The article discusses the leakage of Shells oil platform in the North Sea with the uses of statisitcs and quotes. While Text B is an Image advertisement, a counter ad by Green Peace, depicting a polar bear swimming for his life while the Shell corporation destroys their habitat by drilling oil. a) Audience: a. Who is the target audience? For whom are these songs being written? Text A and B have similar audiences since they both are discussing about Shells decision to drill in the arctic. Their message is directed mainly at shell employees, environmentalists, and people in the oil industry since their messages directly effects them in a particular way. a) Purpose: a. Why are the authors writing these songs? What are they hoping to achieve? In Text A, the Author is principally giving an objective view on Shell drilling oil in the North Sea. The function of Text A is to give non-oppiniated description of the situation to the audience in a very detailed , and factual, manner to make the audience decide their take on Shell drilling in the north. In Text B is more concerned for the wild life, the animals and their habitat being destroyed by Shell. Green peace is the designer of the advertisement, Both texts are hoping to influence the audience to boycott Shell until they decide to care for the environment and stop the extinction of polar bears. *what are the similarities/differences between the two texts? Body Paragraph 2 Content, Theme a) Content: a. What is happening in each text? Why is this important? Text A is describing the Shell-Arctic situation on a factual Basis. The author name-drops several key fact; [shell] admitted more tham 1,300 barrels have so far gushed from a pipe leak ected to its north platform and Moreover the author uses key figures from both shell and WWF to give the reader both sides of the dilemma. Quotes and Statistics are used.

In text A the , it si important to the employee workers of Shell to understand how it will affect their job, environmentalists to understand the damage shell is doing to the North and how when the leakage will stop. Text B shows a Polar bear swimming, the Image has a text that gives a sarcastic/ mocking message to Shelll how they belive that industries should take advantage of global warming and oil in the north region ( basically destroy the biome faster) rather than take action to stop the extinction of endangered species such as polar bears whom ( as the picture shows and states) dont have any land anymore and have to swim up to hundreds of miles in search of food and land. a) Theme: a. The Main Theme In both texts is to be accountable for ones actions, how shell should be conscientious for increasingly damaging the arctic environment by puncturing and leaking oil. Text A describes how Shell should give more information/details to the public about their platform leaking and how they should do everything to stop the leakage. While Text B, Greenpeace is more focused on the animals being affected. Green peace wants shell to understand how their reasons for drilling are immoral and un-practical. *what are the similarities/differences between the two texts? Body Paragraph 3 Tone, Mood a. What is the artists attitude toward the theme?

Text A : The author doesnt really display any significant tone since the article is generally a factual text, Text B : text B has a very sarcastic and snarky tone. It generally mocks Shell and how they would take advantage of global warming and drill in the north , even thought with the melting ice caps the wild life their will barely have any land to live on. The authors attitude toward the theme is positive since responsibility is the theme, and they belive that shell should take responsibility for their actions and stop drilling near the arctic. b. What effect is the artist hoping to have on the reader?

Both texts want to influence the reader/audience to boycott Shell and to an extent fight for the survival of the polar bears and the preservation of their homeland. While text A is less opinioned it still is a little biased against shell, since it

constantly gives negative facts to the Audience.

Text B irony o The image itself, the ad is ironic since its is supposed to be a counter ad. The description is very ironic accompanied by a sarcastic tone, mocks Shell, stating how they o Effect on reader symbolism o the dark contrast of the colors, its as if the oil represents the dark portion of the image and the light portion is the clear sea, the contrast show how eventually the dark will take over the light and polar bears will be consumed by dark oily water, since they wont have any land to live on. o Effect on reader Like the logo the Shell corporation is coming out of its shell and showing

its true colors, the contrast in the image gives a dark mood to the reader, th reader feels aolged to do something to stop the polar bear from swimming enless miles just to survive. repition o the excessive use of the word we , Its making the audience think did they want this , were they part of the drilling in the Arctic, since thats whats shell is stating WE Effect on reader It make sthe reader question if companies use blatent words to riel in support from the public yet do immoral things such as drill in the Arctic for corporate greed.

Text A : Is a simple electronic document, yet the author uses single sentence paragraphs. The reporter does this to make the reader to frequently pause and think about the facts that they have read to help make up their stand on shell drilling in the North, whether it is right or wrong Text B is an print advertisement, with a very simple layout. The Image of the polar bear swimming takes up most of the ad since it is the , the shell logo is used by green peace to show the audience who the perpetrators are and whom to boycott. *what are the similarities/differences between the two texts?
