AWARDING SOMETHING OR SOMEONE HAS ALWAYS BEEN AND WILL ALWAYS BE A STIMULUS
According to this perspective, photographer Fernando Guerras book on the Centre for the Arts Casa das Mudas is an award. An act of pure and spontaneous generosity from someone who was not left indifferent to the work and who has understood how to enthusiastically register the images that allow this creation to be brought to a wider audience. Indeed, this entire space was designed and defined with the public in mind and the necessity of creating new audiences. On an island where tourists and residents demand still better cultural programmes and facilities, to create a dynamic attraction for contemporary art and creation corresponds to a strategy for regional develop rather than simple commitment. Based on such assumptions, the Ponta Oeste Development Company, under the trust of the Vice-Presidency of Madeiras Regional Government, promoted a public tender with a vast programme for the construction of an arts centre. A building with a construction area of 12,000 m2, starting from the expansion of the Calheta Casa de Cultura, with a nucleus of new and autonomous construction that includes covered parking, an exhibition centre, performance hall, restaurant, shop, cafeteria, library and a vast area for educational services, artwork storage and artistic workshops. In order to diminish the impact of the new construction, the fantastic team headed by architect Paulo David employed an old terracing technique for utilizing the land, thereby ensuring different foundation levels and perfect adaptation to the topography. The most important spaces of the project were literally excavated from the mountain, causing the whole complex to correspond to a lower elevation with deliberately fragmented parts that permit an autonomous operation of services. A distributive system of great clarity and simplicity that facilitates the articulation of the spaces and guides visitors in terms of intended services and activities.Theatre, dance, opera, ballet and exhibitions give life to this new bulwark of culture on Madeira with a view of the sea and the ridges of the Vale dos Amores. When art is shared in a love valley, it can only be expected that this will become THE centre for the arts. The new visiting hall of Madeira awaits you. Happy reading. GRANDE ESCALA
Embora nada possa substituir a experincia fsica directa.
LARGE SCALE
When I came to Calheta for the first time about six years ago and started collaborating with the Casa das Mudas, I had no doubts that this was a situation full of potential and future prospects due to the beauty of the landscape and the competence of the work whose development I had the opportunity to collaborate on. However, not even my optimism would have made me guess that after such a short period of time I would be invited to collaborate on a publication dedicated to an arts centre that in terms of landscapes and contemporary architecture can be considered to be among the most beautiful in the world. In a time so often dominated by defeatism and pessimism, it is not an exaggeration to underline the greatness of the creative ambition that allows projects like this one to be realised. Let us begin with Calhetas dazzling natural landscape, such as can be enjoyed from the privileged location and spatial organisation of the new Centre for the Arts. No cultural centre in Portugal and few in the world offer the visitor such an emotional experience of a landscape. One that slopes in accordance with a gentle harmony between the mountain, rock, land, trees, sea and sky which seem to have organised themselves purposefully to receive and embrace the new centre. Those who have had the privilege of spending days on end in this space, as in my case as commissioner for the inaugural exhibition Large Scale Works from the Berardo Collection, know the wonderful alterations in the perception of forms, textures and perspectives that the variation in light, the arrival and departure of the sun and moon and the passing of clouds continually compose through the hours. The overwhelming feeling is an irresistible desire to remain put. All of this is transmitted with absolute clarity in the notable photographs included in this book, though nothing can substitute the direct physical experience. Paulo Davids architectural project for the Centre knew how to look at and apprehend the landscape that surrounded and challenged it, producing a set of volumes that, without his abdication of large scales or an impressive force of presence, does not contradict the surrounding nature, but to the contrary, strengthens and enhances many of the elements that compose it, for example, through the option of using basalt stone for the buildings facing which seems to extend the life of the rock on which it is built. Also in visual terms the organisation and circulation through the centres spaces was designed in a way so as to provide a succession of surprises and happenings in relation to the landscape. In the turn of a corridor, at the end of a room or through a narrow rectangular window, there opens before us visions of a hill falling towards the sea or a 180 horizon where the sea and sky unite in order to establish a dialogue with the works of art at our side.

At breve. Alexandre Melo Professor Universitrio e Crtico de Arte

From the point of view of the commissioner and the exhibitions organiser, the building is immensely generous in terms of possibilities and challenges. One finds rooms of the most varied rhythms, dimensions and characteristics, allowing for maximum flexibility in adapting to the infinite diversity of forms of contemporary artistic production. There are rooms that are more enclosed and closer to the conventional model of the white cube, indispensable for presenting more traditional forms of painting or sculpture.Yet there are also rooms that open out towards the landscape or that open vertically, ready to welcome more heterodox installations and interventions that know how to establish a dialogue with the particularities of the place receiving them. The same type of diversity and plurality of options is verified in the design of buildings interior passages that receive different and more or less autonomous showings and that design different, alternative routes depending on the type of public and objectives of the visit. Leaving the interior for the exterior, the dialogue between building and landscape becomes even more eloquent. There is a desire to remain there staring at the sea and sky. There is a desire to be in the sea and sky looking towards that house: the house of arts. I have just realised that several months have passed since I was last in Calheta at the house of arts and I miss it. See you there shortly. Alexandre Melo University Professor and Art Critic

ESTADIA A PRAZO
Fernando Guerra Arquitecto e Fotgrafo

A SHORT STAY
To have the opportunity to bring together in book form this collection of images of one of the most recognised and distinguished projects of national architecture in recent years is, above all, an enormous privilege. In the Centre for the Arts, I encountered images that reflect the form through which I see architecture and the manner in which I like to safeguard such images. For me, the experience of an instant is only complete by sharing the image and this book serves as a natural closure to such a cycle. The book tells the story of a day spent at the Centre for the Arts from daybreak to nightfall, demonstrating the buildings permanent effect and the changes that have occurred around it. With this on-site reflection, the concept at the origin of this collection of books is reinforced. Such a concept argues that time, the structure and its space are the elements that define the photographic act itself and the manner of showing the actual architecture. To look at a work is above all a voluntary act and one of critical selection. Only afterwards, can we actually mover closer and situate ourselves in relation to it. Even if never absolutely dominating the view shot, the photographic eye is always and above all the realisation of a particular way of seeing. The photographs of this book are a visible part of a personal register that seeks to be an instrument for understanding reality. From my experience at the Centre for the Arts, I have retained the constant surprise and emotion of one who discovers a new work. What remains are the memory of the unexpected angles, the cut of the volumes against the gloaming landscape, the frames resting on the interior light, the strength of the texture and richness of the stone, the confrontations between the opaque darkness and transparent light of the glass. The lasting sensation is that in some of these images everything seems to have prepared itself to be photographed, as if the Centre for the Arts were waiting for a glance that would recognise and reveal its pose. Perhaps this is simply a furtive glance of one persons short stay in Calheta. I hope to return shortly. Fernando Guerra Architect and Photographer

95
As a Madeiran and architect working in the archipelago, Paulo David is obstinate. And in Calheta, such obstinacy manifests itself on distinct fronts. One that challenges head on the visible marks of a particular history that formed the humanisation of a landscape, directly reflected in the setting of the new building and in its voluntary opacity towards what exists (guarding itself from what will exist). One of constructive rigour, administered through scrupulous calculation during the design process, without necessarily rejecting isolated adjustments of details during construction. The result is a solid building in the image it conveys, efficient in the functional malleability of its internal spaces. As a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture of Lisbon Technical University in 1989 and thus with a permeability normally associated with professionals from the same cutting, there is a temptation to try and find tutelary figures in Paulo Davids development as well. Spatially, the interior of the Calheta building bears similarities to Siza. Very precise formal particularities lateral light from above, floor level openings, an upper balcony encircling the hall differentiate the various compartments of the expositive complex. The vertical distributions are enclosed within single flights of stairs between walls that thus become inhabited. There is no direct axial path, but a linking of spaces that proportion a promenade projected onto organic geometry. The auditorium, in turn, resembles a tightly controlled Euclidean mechanism. In the foyer, a staircase plastically imposes itself. The library unfolds in a three-level cascade. Despite its reclusion, the entire building has as its reference, not the cliff in which it is embedded, but the sea and the past that has constructed the relation between it and the island. This principle follows more from the presence of Gonalo Byrne, with whom Paulo David worked, than from Siza. Thus, the interpretation of the site is Byrnian, i.e. it proceeds from the fingerprint left by Byrne on at least an entire generation of former collaborators and which stems from an visceral identification between building and place. However, in Paulo David, Byrnes presence is manifested preferentially in absolute values and not in materials, making the relationship between the sea and the CAC less literal than would be expected. Dealing with the sea on an island without the obvious immediacy is the challenge marking his greatest works. For example, in the Casa de Funchal (2000), there is a confined environment and zenithal light that in an inventive capacity precede the solutions for the CAC. To say that the Centre harbours a Byrnian atmosphere is to obviously understand the first movements of this architect. Nevertheless, the Centre reinforces the need that exists to maintain a distance from the sea, that is, from the more picturesque quality of the site. The internal plasticity of the spaces contrasts with the anonymous exterior and its quasi-architectural non-existence. The architecture acquires its just value: the Centre is a place of comfort and not an expressionist exercise. The contention is an ideological discourse and functions as a way of emphasizing the
96
Ana Vaz Milheiro Arquitecta

solidity of its construction. With Calheta, Paulo David allows himself quite probably in the course of the project a (less contained) plasticity for the exterior. Underneath, Paulo David seems to pursue the best of both worlds and it is when he does this that his work takes on greater complexity and seductive power. On Madeira there is still proximity to a work constructed by Byrne the Cais do Carvo project (1990-98) in Funchal a notable mark of a cycle of healthy contaminations among architects who have designed projects for the island. Paulo Davids generation worked on and/or saw themselves in this project and perhaps without intuiting it passed on a healthy referential tone to the next generation. Following a void of relevant architectural facts, the uniqueness of the Cais do Carvo has had an effect on Madeiras best new project. It countervails the countrys only modern project imported from Brazil, Funchals Hotel Casino (1964-75), a structure that through its gigantism monumentally interpreted the specific morphology of the territory. In a certain way, the practice of a tradition on contemporary Madeira could easily be strengthened through the ability of its architects to manage these two legacies operating around the significance of the landscape with a distance of about 30 years. Sensibilities measured between the very localised (also historically dependent) and delicate operation, and an expansive movement capable of influence on a macro-scale (under obligation to a language with universal aspirations). Nevertheless, this has still not happened, and the islands architecture, after the latest electoral cycles is more bureaucratic and predictable than its past would seem to indicate and in the footsteps of which few others like Paulo David have followed. Yet in Calheta, despite a resistance to any kind of gigantism, Paulo David could have prematurely raised the possibility of confluence. The Centre for the Arts has probably found the most eloquent expression for providing continuity to Byrnes Madeiran endeavour, through its capacity of insertion and, in a smaller dimension according to Niemeyer/Viana de Limas design, through a search, despite its invisibility, to equally produce a landscape event, an onsite inscription. On both fronts, his formal and constructive control is a foundational step in a firmer direction. Ana Vaz Milheiro Architect
