REFLECTION

Reflective essay This semester, I have learnt a new dimension in teaching English. I am attending a new and exciting English subject named English for Language Teacher which was coded as ELE3103. In this subject, there are five main topics. Those topics are language and communication, introduction to phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. I have treasured a lots of new things. After the language and communication topics been introduced, I can define correctly that language is a tool for communication. Besides I knew the factor that affect language which is culture. Culture affects language through the physical environment, the social environment and the values of society. I found out there are six properties of language which are language is a communicative and informative signal, language has displacement, arbitrariness, productivity, duality, and cultural transmission. Language has several functions such as instrumental function, regulatory function, imaginative function, informative function, interactional function, heuristic function, and personal function. Next I have learnt about phonology. This topic exposed me about the organs involve in producing sounds. There are scientific methods in producing sound such as dental method which is t sound, explosive method which is p sound, and extras. This topic did introduced me the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). IPA assisting us in learning sounds and correct pronunciation. I also learnt how to transcribe the word into phonetic alphabet. I gained a new knowledge in using the dictionary which is to find the phonetic alphabet of a word. Morphology is a topic that requiring me to study on how words are put together to form a meaning. The smallest units of meaning is what we called as morpheme. I have learnt that there are two types of morpheme which are free morpheme - morpheme that can stand alone, and bound morpheme - a dependent morpheme. The example of bound morpheme categories are prefix which occur only before other morphemes and suffix which occur only after morphemes. There are morpheme that has same function but sound differently which

also known as allomorphs. Morpheme that change word class is derivational morpheme and morpheme that change the syntax is inflectional morpheme. I have studied the word formation processes which are by compounding, eponyms, acronym, blends, backformation, and abbreviations. The next topic is syntax. Overall, this topic is about the formation of a sentence. To be precise, it is how a string of words become clauses and phrases. I have learnt how to breakdown a sentence into tree diagram according to their word classes. The example of word classes are noun, verb, and the others. It is important for me to classify sentences and words into its own categories. Last but not least, I studied about semantics. As the conclusion, learning a language included learning the agreed upon meaning of certain string of sounds and learning how combine these meaningful units into larger units that also convey meaning. There are two types of semantics which are lexical semantics and phrasal semantics. I have also learnt that a sentence might define a lots of meaning. Hence, in this topic, I realized that a sentence might has conceptual meaning, associative meaning, or pragmatics meaning. Pragmatics meaning can be divided into three classes which are referential meaning, social meaning, and affective meaning. On the whole, I have learnt a lot of new knowledge in this course. I really hope that I can use up this knowledge wisely in preparing myself to become a teacher. As a future languages teacher, I should designing my mind with a bunch of useful knowledge.
