It is bounded by Myanmar on the East, Arunachal Pradesh on the North, Assam on the West and Manipur on the South. Nagaland is mostly mountainous except the part bordering the Assam Valley. Mount Saramati is the highest peak and forms a natural barrier between Nagaland and Myanmar. The Nagas, inhabitants of Nagaland, form more than twenty tribes. Traditionally, the Nagas wear colourful tribal outfits with bamboo shields and decorated spears. Folk dances and ballads popular among the Nagas uphold such values as bravery, love, generosity, etc. Dances are mostly woven around war themes and are performed with amazing mock war emotions. Colourful dressed young girls performing the bamboo dance at an incredible speed and with great accuracy present a fascinating sight. The Nagas celebrate their festivals with great enthusiasm. Read the following passage: I came in contact with animals far more in prison than I had done outside. I had always been fond of dogs, and had kept some, but I could never look after them properly as other matters claimed my attention. In prison I was grateful for their company. Indians do not, as a rule, approve of animals as household pets. It is remarkable that in spite of their general philosophy of non-violence to animals, they are often singularly careless and unkind to them. Even the cow, that a favoured animal, though looked up to and almost worshipped by many Hindus and often the cause of riots, is not treated kindly. Worship and kindliness do not always go together. Different countries have adopted different animals as symbols of their ambition or character the eagle of the United States of America and of Germany, the lion and bulldog of England, the fighting cock of France, the bear of old Russia. How far do these patron animals mould national character? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Why could the author not take care of his pets? What do not always go together? VIII-ENGLISH COURSE - "B"

Courtesy is the polish on personality that attracts everyone at first glance. If an educated person is not well mannered, then his education is of no use. (2) It has been said that courtesy makes up for the lack of physical beauty in an individual. Only the person who is able to win over hearts with his good manners can be considered beautiful. In the absence of refinement, physical beauty is of no value. A lot of people speak rudely to their employees, subordinate staff and domestic workers. This is wrong. If you speak courteously to the people who work for you, they will feel valued and their productivity will also increase correspondingly. It is expected of any civilized person that he thank those who serve him. When expressing gratitude, it should not be a mere formality but should be sincere, coming straight from the heart. In the same way, saying Im sorry for any mistake on your part will not make you inferior. On the contrary, an apology, if expressed with sincerity, will endear you to others and make you more popular. (6) 1
