KevinDeissler SocialMediaintheClassroom Introduction: Thislessonwillconnectstudentsfromtwodifferentclassesacrossthedistrictwhoarelearningaboutthe CivilWar.Ateacherwillteamupwithanotherteacheranddeterminewhoseclasswillrepresentthe northandwhoseclasswillrepresentthesouth.Atthebeginningofthelesson,studentsfromboth classeswillparticipateinsharingtheirpriorknowledgeabouttheirrespectivesides.Teacherswill scheduleaSkypesessionfortheirstudentswiththeVirginiaHistoricalSociety.Uponlearningabout lifeasaCivilWarsoldier,bothclasseswilluseTwittertodiscusslifeasasoldierintheNorthandthe Southasiftheywerecommentingonthewar.

UsethePadletwalltoassesswhatstudentsknowaboutwhatlifewaslikeforsoldierswhowerefrom eithertheNorthortheSouth.Specificdirectionsonthewallwilldirectstudentsonhowtorespond. 3. TheteacherwillsetupaSkypelessonwiththeVirginiaHistoricalSocietytolearnaboutlifeasaCivil Warsoldier.

EachclasshasbeengivenasideoftheCivilWar,eithertheNorthortheSouth.Usingwhattheyve learnedaboutlifeintheNorthandSouth,eachclasswilltweetmessagesfromtheirclassTwitter accountasiftheywereasoldiertweetingduringtheCivilWar.Eachtweetshouldreflectwhatthe studentslearnedviathepreviouslessonsandwhatthefightingenvironmentwaslikeonbothsidesof thewar,andeverystudentmustcomeupwithatweet.Thechallengeisconveyingthefeelingsand actionsinto140characters.Asasidebarlesson,theteacherwillexplainhowhashtagsallowfor otherstofollowtheconversation.Otherteachersinthedistrictcouldgetinonthisaswellanditcould expandintoahugemockCivilWar.

Assessment: Studentswillbeassessedbasedonhowtheycanconveythethoughtsfeelingsofasoldierthroughsocial media.Theironlinebehaviorwillalsoreflectintheirfinalgrade,asthislessonalsostrivestoteachthe properuseandresponsibilitiesofsocialmedia.
