A simple configuration for a telephony Service on a switch: The following lesson is basically written to familiarize you with the concept of telephony service available on a router in the local network; with no futher due, we will be designing a small network composed of: - a router - switch - two iphones connected to a switch The diagram is as it appears below:

The basic configuration of a router: We will be just doing a basic configuration for a router now, and that is: - naming the hostname, defining the line console 0 and vty, and finally, giving a static IP address to the interface fa0/0:

Defining the Interface Fa0/0:

Implementing a telephony service requires using a DHCP pool at the router level, we are using the native vlan now to test our practice, but in a more complicated environment, such as having more than one vlan, assigning dhcp numbers can be done through the router, not just a server. Therfore, in this exercise, we will be creating a DHCP pool at the router level, here is the command on how to do so.

We have successfully configured the dhcp for the vlan voice, which is in this case the native vlan. If you notice in the picture above, we highlighted the word option. In Cisco, it is pre-defined that vlan 150 is mainly for voice. Therefore, the

command option had to be used in order to let the router know that the DHCP is giving ip address to voice over IP clients. What should be done next? The next step is something called Telephony Service, now since we are using Packet tracer to complete this exercise, the chosen router should be 2800 because 1840 type doesnt have this facility available. At the global configure mode, we should type the question mark ? to see the different options we can select from:

The highlighted for stands for the global configuration mode, after typing ? at the prompt, you will see all the commands that can be issued at that privileged level, if we screw down, we will see the following results, which is basically what we are looking for:

Now, we should insert that command line at the global configuration mode:

The diagram above shows we havealready gained access into the telephony configuration mode, and after typing ?, we can see all the available command lines we can use, in this exercise, out of all the commands, we will be focusing on: Max-dn

Max-ephones Auto Ephone-dn IP

Max-dn: Stands for maximum dialed numbers. Max-ephones: Maximium ephone supported Auto: It auto assigns a range of numbers for the phones. Ephone-dn: IP: Specifies the gateway where the auto assinging of the DHCP comes from, in this case, we will be specifying the ip address of our gateway (192.168.1.1) Assigning specific phone numbers with each ip address. Lets now define all the previous command lines above:

Explaining the previous command lines: We got into the telephony service mode, we specified maximum directory numbers, 10 maximum ephones supported, the assigning of numbers should

range between 1 and 9, and finally, we numbered two ephones dn so far, 1111 and 2222. Note: More can be learned in case if you want to learn more about telephony service and lets not forget packet tracer are limited to explain specific tasks only. There are more programs that can get you into a higher level of understanding like GNS3. The Switch Basic Configuration: We will know give a brief configuration and lets focus more on the ports our iphones are connected to. Keep in mind we are now using a very simple configuration for telephony service, the more your network is complicated, the more command lines and tricks you need to learn. Configuring the switch:

Lets more into the part of the switch we are really concerned with; defining the ports to know the voice data and get them; what we will do now, we will define all the ports from 1 to 23 as ports that can or perhaps belong to a voice vlan, and in this case, the vlan we need to determine is vlan 1. Lets do it:

We are done with the switch, lets move to the iphones connected; notice the signal is still read, which means, the power is off, we need to turn their power on. Iphone 2:

And do the same with the second one: Notice assigning the ip address and phone number will take a little bit of time, so be patient. After that, move the mouse over the phone, and you will get the following outcome:

iphone 2 Lets do the same for iphone 3 now:

Since both iphones are configured with line numbers, lets try to see if they do see each other or not. Lets make a phone call from ip phone 2 to ip phone 3:

What happens when we pick up iphon 3:

This is the end of our lesson, and inshallah more to come in the future. Thanks for reading.
