What have you learned from your audience feedback?

In order to gather audience feedback on my main product and ancillary texts I created a questionnaire which asked various members of my target audience the following questions. The questions were rated at 1-5 with 1 being the most and 5 being the least. Some of the questions asked also required some verbal feedback and reasoning for their decisions. I also chose to ask the gender and age on my questionnaire just to make sure that people answering it were within my target audience. These were my questions: Questions are rated 1-5 1= most 5=least 1) How convincing was the narrative of my music video?

Question 1 Responses

1) Very good

2)Good

3)Neutral

4)Poor

5)Very poor

I chose this question in order to find out how people felt the narrative worked in my video. The majority of my responses told me that it was neither effective nor ineffective but swayed slightly towards the ineffective side. This wasnt ideally how I wouldve liked them to react to it but I showed them a rough cut version of the video which did contain a few small gaps in it, which looking back on it now I could see may have distorted the whole narrative itself. As a result of the feedback from this question it made me realise that I shouldve included more scenes which helps to build the character, to aid in getting the audience on his side and then scenes to get the audience to go against the antagonist. However, I ultimately felt that there wasnt enough space for those gaps to fill therefore did not include them in my final main product piece.

This question was designed to establish how my target audience felt my Digipak related to the bands genre. This was the complete opposite of how I wanted them to respond to this question but in hindsight I realised that some people may have not known what the bands genre were. This has perhaps made me realise that Chvrches were not as popular as I had thought as I just assumed that people would already know their kind of music. However, I feel that it does fit with the bands genre as they typically use computer generated graphics with obscure concepts to them, bright colours. However, the images used arent totally irrelevant with the images being associated with the bands name. 3) Is there a gritty urban style to the music video throughout?

The answers to this question suggest that perhaps my video was not as gritty and urban as I wouldve liked it to be. I took inspiration from Jake Buggs Seen it All and wanted it to be urban and look similar to that style. I think maybe people it wasnt so urban is because they are familiar with the setting and know in reality that it is a suburban area. Ideally, I wouldve like to have had a lot more responses in the good section at least and in terms of enhancing the urban feel look to shoot in a larger town or perhaps a city. Although, I think the intentions were correct and if it was pulled off more effectively then it would appeal to my target audience a lot more than it does currently. 4) How strong do you feel the link is between my Digipak and my music video?

Question 4 responses

This question was asked in order to establish how my Digipak and music video followed Goodwins theory and the link between the products. As a result of my response they suggest that most people felt that the link between the products was neither clear nor unclear. This means that it did not appeal to my target audience as much as I wouldve hoped they would. However, as a result of my responses I realised that the link between them was distorted as my main product was supposed to be dull, gritty and urban whereas my ancillary texts consist of bright eye-catching colours.

5) How suitable do you think the setting is for my video?

I felt that deciding on the appropriate setting wouldve helped me a great deal in making sure the narrative was effective. I set out this question in order to ask my target audience if they felt the setting was good for my video. It turned out that the setting did appeal and was fitting for what I wanted and received a Good rating mostly. However, it wasnt a one which would have been ideal. To do this it was suggested that I used a more urban setting like a big city to really emphasise the rough and ready urban life. I wouldve done this in the first place however getting to cities was an issue as transport was not always available to me.

Jordan Weeks This question was designed to find out if my target audience felt that my decision to take part of the song lyrics and incorporate them as a literal narrative was successful or not. My responses suggest that they felt my decision was correct and that it was a good, yet surprising idea. They gave it a good rating but not the top rating, however, for this question no feedbac k was left in order to achieve the highest possible rating. From my perspective, this was a good reaction from my target audience but it obviously couldve been better. With the facilities and software available to me I couldnt match the conventions of real existing media products of using conceptual computer generated graphics and effects for my video. If I had those opportunities available to me then I wouldve experimented with the idea of basing my entire video on that or certainly aspects of it. 7) Is my music video of the same standard as an existing video of the same genre? And why?

As one of my few final questions I asked my target audience if they felt that my video was of the same standard and an existing video of the same genre and why. They mostly said that it did or it didnt. Reasons why they felt it wasnt is because there are a few continuity errors which is not professional and the latter stages of the video had poor lighting where it seemed like it hadnt been thought of, some shots were held too long and finally, it was also a narrative and not a concept performance. However, they felt the most part was professional as it had interesting shots, clever ideas and great composition. This I am taking is a vaguely positive reaction from my target audience but again, couldve been better.

This question was designed to establish how my target audience felt about my poster. This is what I felt was my strongest product. Judging by the responses my target audience agreed with this with the rating very good receiving the most responses. My audience felt that my promotional poster was the best product as it effectively engaged my audience. This response was how I wanted them to react because I felt this was my strongest product and was eager for them to think the same. This product would definitely be spread and shared amongst friends as it features social links and encourages the use of converged devices and multi screeners by using a QR code. Feedback I received stated that the layout was simple but effective and the fonts used were relevant and appropriate to both the band and the genre. However, to improve it was suggested that there were too many blank spaces. 9) Is my Digipak of the same standard as an existing album of that genre? And why?

Finally, the last question was about my Digipak. Again, my audience felt that this product was very good. This is because the Digipak and poster links well together because of the use of the same colour scheme. This did appeal to my target audience and they reacted better than I had hoped as I felt that my poster was better than my Digipak and felt my Digipak may perhaps deserved a lower rating. This made me realise that my Digipak may have been better than I personally thought. Some of my audience feedback consisted of statements saying: that the Digipak contained relevant conventions and matched the poster and from other responses people had commented on the use of colours and structure of the product.
