The following contains descriptions of the Official FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) Referees hand signals that we will be using. It is easy and well worth the effort for any player to learn these basic hand signals. Basics to remember are: All one-handed signals are made with the hand toward the side of the team which made the error or request Immediately after a rally is over, the hand signal Team to Serve and a point is always indicated FIRST to the team who earned the next service and point. Next, the hand signal explaining the reason why (or what the game/ball fault is) is indicated.

AUTHORIZATION TO SERVE
Move the hand to indicate the direction of serve.

TEAM TO SERVE
Extend the arm to the side of team that will serve.

CHANGE OF COURTS
Raise the forearms front and back and twist them around the body.

TIME-OUT
Place the palm of one hand over the fingers of the other, held vertically. (i.e. generally for 30 seconds)

SUBSTITUTION
Circular motion of the forearms around each other.

MISCONDUCT PENALTY OR EXPULSION

Show a yellow card for penalty. Show a red card for expulsion.

END OF (SET) MATCH

Cross the forearms in front of the chest, hands open.

DISQUALIFIED
Show both cards together for Disqualification.

BALL NOT TOSSED OR RELEASED AT THE SERVICE HIT

Lift the extended arm, the palm of the hand facing upwards.

DELAY IN SERVICE
Raise eight fingers, spread open. (i.e. the server has taken more than 8 seconds to serve the ball which is a service fault)

BLOCKING FAULT
Raise both arms vertically, palms Forward.

POSITIONAL OR ROTATION FAULT

Make a circular motion with the Forefinger.

BALL IN
Point the arm and fingers towards the floor.

BALL OUT
Raise the forearms vertically, hands open, palms towards the body.

CATCH OR LIFT
Slowly lift the forearm, palm of the hand facing upwards.

DOUBLE CONTACT
Raise two fingers, spread open.

FOUR HITS
Raise four fingers, spread open.

NET TOUCHED BY A PLAYER

Indicate the respective side of the Net.

REACHING BEYOND THE NET

Place a hand above the net, palm facing downwards.

ATTACK HIT FAULT

Make a downward motion with the forearm, hands open.

PENETRATION
Point to the centre line.

DOUBLE FAULT & REPLAY

Raise both thumbs vertically.

BALL TOUCHED
Brush with the palm of one hand the fingers of the other, held vertically.

DELAY WARNING
Cover the right wrist with open left hand, palm facing referee (warning) or point the write with a yellow card (penalty)

LINE JUDGE HAND SIGNALS Obtaining First Referees Attention

Wave arm overhead to obtain the first referees attention, when necessary.

Inbounds
Arms extended in front of body, hands open (palms down) toward the floor area between the attack line and the net.

Out-of-Bounds/Antenna Violation
Hold forearms in front of chest, hands open (fingers together) and palms toward face.

Ball Touched
Hand on offending teams side held beside head, palm toward head, then brush upward across fingertips one time with other hand, palm forward.

Line Violation
Indicate the line where violation occurred by extending arm and pointing toward the line with the index finger.

View of Play Blocked

Cross forearms in front of chest, palms facing the body.

LINE JUDGE FLAG SIGNALS Signal 1 Ball In

Point down with the flag at a 45 degree angle Used when the ball touches the playing court, including the boundary lines Signalled by the line judge who controls the line nearest to where the ball touches the floor

Point straight up with the flag Used when the part of the ball that touches floor lands completely outside the boundary lines Used to indicate the ball touching an object outside the court, the ceiling or a person out of play Used to indicate the ball touching the ropes, posts or net itself outside the side bands Signalled by the line judge who controls the line nearest to where the ball touches the floor

Signal 2 Ball Out

Signal 3 Ball Touched

Raise the flag and touch the top of the flag with the palm of the free hand Used when the ball is touched by the blocker(s) or a player of the receiving/defending team and then touches the floor outside of the boundary lines on the same side OR when a team has played the ball and it lands out on their own side Signalled by the line judge who controls the line nearest to where the ball touches the floor

Signal 4 Ball Out or Foot Fault (Any Player)

Wave the flag over the head and point to the antenna or the respective end line Used when the ball crosses the vertical plane of the net outside the crossing space into the opponents court or it touches net features outside the side band OR when the server faults OR when a player is outside their own court at the moment of the service hit Signalled by the line judge who controls the line where the infraction takes place

Signal 5 Judgement Impossible

Raise and cross both arms and hands in front of the chest Used when the line judge is unable to evaluate a fault within Signal must be given without delay at the exact moment the line judge realizes an event cannot be judged (taking into consideration referee corps communication)
