Tutorial 2: Light propagation in Optical Fiber ________________________________________________________________________ Questions: Group 1 1.

State Snells law for refraction and outline its significance in fiber-optic cables. 2. Defined Critical Angle. 3. Light passes from one glass (n1 = 1.48) into another (n2 = 1.53). Find the angle of refraction for incident angles of 12, 24, and 48. 4. Plot numerical aperture versus acceptance angle over the range 0NA0.7. Assume that the refractive index of the surrounding material is 1.0 in the calculation.

5. Define the following terms: velocity of propagation, refraction and refractive index. 6. State Snells law for refraction and outline its significant in fiber optic cables. 7. A beam of light is incident on a boundary between two dielectrics. The refractive indices are n1 = 1.46 and n2= 1.48. Plot the transmitted angle as function of the incident angle for the incident angle from 00 to 900. 8. A beam of light is incident on a boundary between two dielectrics. The refractive indices are n1 = 1.48 and n2= 1.46. Plot the transmitted angle as function of the incident angle for the incident angle from 00 to 900..

Group 3 9. Define critical angle. 10. Describe what is meant by mode of operation; by index profile in optic fiber. 11. A beam of light is incident on a plane boundary between two dielectrics. The incident-ray angle is at 10o to the boundary normal and the transmitted beam is at 12o. Which of the two media has the higher refractive index? 12. A glass plate is 1-cm thick and has a refractive index of 1.52. Assuming only one reflection at each interface, what is the maximum fraction of incident light that passes through the glass plate in air? Note: Assume no absorption in the glass.
